Flat footed Barefoot Running?

Dave

I am flat footed in my left foot but have a proper arch in my right foot. I have Purchased Vibram Five Fingers and started running barefoot. Currently I can run a maximum of one mile uncomfortably. Before I could run half marathons before Orthodics and the pain they delivered. My left knee hurts on the top right muscle above my knee cap. This is only on my knee that has the flat foot. Do I have to go back to the painful orthodics or will the pain in my knee eventually subside?
also, should I wear my orthodics in my work shoes while I am training barefoot or completely ditch the orthodics?
Any advice will help, thanks.

Answer
Running barefoot is VERY mechanically different from running with traditional shoes on. In particular, it uses muscles in your feet & lower legs that you don't use much when you run in shoes, and most runners, even those used to running marathons & half-marathons in shoes, will find barefoot running extremely difficult at first.

Here is an excellent article from Runner's World about how to transition from traditional shoes to barefoot running and what to expect. Without seeing you, knowing your history & training, or watching you walk and run, my best guess is that the pain will subside if you properly and gradually give your muscles time to adjust to barefoot running--but you will need to do it VERY slowly.

Hope that helps!

Form running, long distance ?

treter

When I run long distance, I got a pretty good pace... but is it better to put my feet higher to take larger steps , but it takes more energy ?

Answer
A kick is your best solution to your running not taking larger steps. Practice more on a consistent stride that is efficient which will pay dividends in running longer. Watch Youtube video or running world.com on video of the best long distance runners for pointers. Good luck!
