Measuring Running Distance?

ELEPHANT B

I started to run about 2-3 miles per day. I want to steadily increase the distance so I want something that will measure how much I run in a fast, easy and cheap way. I've heard the Garmin watches are great but there way to expensive and I'd rather get new shoes. Also, I don't have the time to sit on google earth and plan it out. I've heard Nike + works pretty well, I have an Ipad and a Android phone but I'm not going to buy a Nano just for this. I don't like carrying my phone either. Any suggestions, accuracy dosen't have to be perfect.

Answer
I bought my wife a Garmin Forerunner 210 and she loves it. I know they are a bit expensive, but you can track your runs online and it's a good motivator to keep going. For $129.99 (price from Garmin), you can purchase the less fancy Garmin Forerunner 10,

If you don't want to spend anything more than you have, I would definitely suggest finding a good app for your android device. They are usually inexpensive and get the job done. Unfortunately I have nothing to suggest since I have an iOS phone.

Best distance measuring running watch?

Ana

I want to get my boyfriend a watch that measures the distance he runs for our 2 year anniversary. What would you reccomend?

Cant be too expensive, im 16.

He runs varsity cross country but lost his a while ago, and i know he'd love a new one.

Answer
It sounds like you want to get him a GPS watch.

An alternative to that is the Nike Sport band which is only $60. it uses a sensor you attach to your shoe laces or put in a nike + shoe. Not as accurate as a GPS watch but they look cool, plus they get you onto the Nike + site.

The cheapest GPS watch I know of it the Timex Marathon. It's about 100 bucks and not really that great a watch. And I'm thinking $100 is probably out of your price range, anyway.

As an alternative, you might get him an ipod shuffle.

A similiar idea is that a lot of runners need a watch with an interval timer. The Casio Men's W756-1AV Digital Sport Watch is only about $20 but is a great watch for the money.

Answer
When I was a small child in the middle forties (about five years old), my mother used to take me to afternoon movies. There were three downtown movies within an easy walk of the house. I wasn't too happy about these outings because I knew they would be a bunch of giant black and white faces talking, talking, talking --with an occasional kissing, kissing, followed by crying, crying and then back to the intermenible talking.

After a while, my mother would have her handkerchief out, dabbing at her eyes. There was no action, no shooting, no explosions, no fist fights, nothing to hold my interest. So I would stand up in my seat and turn around so that I was looking over the back of the chair (just my head showed) and I would watch everyone behind me... they were pretty much all women and they pretty much all were sobbing with handkerchiefs dabbing their eyes.

After a few moments, the ones on the row behind me got quiet annoyed with the beady little eyes watching them but they were the most interesting thing in the theatre to me. A little bit more and they started making turn-around motions with their fingers and glaring at me. And, of course, after another minute or so, one would lean forward and whisper to my mother -- who would then grab me by my arm and jerk me around to face the screen. This repeated itself several times during the movie. Often, I had to content myself with kicking the back of the seat in front of me. My poor mother.

Iphone 4 vs Samsung captivate Data Usage?

I want to get either an iphone 4 or a samsung captivate. My number one goal is to keep the phone under my data cap. I would be using it for some facebook, a little internet browsing, music, apps, texting(big one), and video. I do not care about iphones lack of internet flash, (but the camera flash is a posotive). But my number one thing is data consumtion. IE if i were to have an iphone, i know facebook updates will be pushed w/o the app being open. But on android, idk if it supports push notifications, and that would use all the more data loading the app to look for notifications.
The data is my number one concern.

PS: i dont want to spend money on a new ipod touch, so im leaning at the iphone. I have an expensive ihome, and i dont want it to go to waste.
I also forgot to mention i would be on a 200 mb data plan

Answer
android runs way more data than an iphone, think of all the widgits runnion on the background, and i have my facebook open 24/7 updates every half hour, along wiht live weather and at shcool/work i watch lot of youtube. the most i ran was 1.2gb og data never went over 2gb. if you get an android i suggest u download 3g watchdog

Verizon Cell Phone - Bolt vs Charge?

Q. So I am stuck between the HTC Thunderbolt vs Samsung Charge. I know that the Charge's screen is awesome. I heard that the OS is somewhat slow compared to the HTC's Sense. Is that true? I will admit I do not know how to root a phone to make it better. Any good websites for beginners? I heard that the ThunderBolt's battery is horrible but I am always near a charger anyways. Please Help. I can not decide :(

Answer
I chose the thunderbolt. And HTC sense isn't an OS. OS means operating system, and both of these phones operating systems is android. What you are looking at is UI which means User Interface. I chose the thunderbolt it because i loove HTC sense UI much more than samsungs touchwiz because samsungs UI just keeps reminding me of the iphone and its not really that orginized. HTC sense is much friendlier and its so much more useful to. I do have to admit that the droid charge's screen does look amazing, but the thunderbolts screen is still more than satisfying. The thunderbolts screen isn't bad or anything at all, its actually amazing, but it just doesnt look that good just when compared to a phone with a super AMOLED display like the charge which has many more colors and a brighter screen. Plus the thunderbolt also supplies a kickstand, and i don't know about you, but its very useful to me anytime i want to play music because a speaker is located under the kickstand, or if i want to watch vidoes, or if you wanna video call. And you know, you can get an extended battery for the thunderbolt which lasts longer than the charges battery, and its only about 20 bucks. Plus, the thunderbolts battery isn't that bad. I'll explain why its hated by many people. Ok, see when some people get a new phone like the thunderbolt, they love to open every single application on the phone that they install from that market. And you may not know this, but since this is a smartphone, if you are in an application or a game and you just click the home button, the application is actually most likely still running in the background of the phone. So as you are using the phone and you go to a different application, then 2 applications start running at once. And it just going more and more SO OBVIOUSLY THE FRICKEN BATTERY WILL DRAIN FAST! Then all the dumb people that do that give the phones battery a terrible rating when it was just their own stupidity which caused the battery to drain fast. So if you want to exit an application and prevent it from running when your phone is off or just from running in the background, then instead of clicking the home button, keep clicking the back button on your phone, and then it will either exit the app itself, or if it doesn't exit the app by clicking home, then it's ok to click the home button. But no matter which phone you get, definitely download an app called advanced task killer, which is a free app, and it's just an app which tells you al of your applications which are running in the background, and it lets you shut them off from there. Just be smart with the battery and don't be like those stupid people that are crazy about the battery. So pretty much i gave you the main big differences, because these phones are actually very much alike and they are both great phones, but if you had to pick between the 2, i would chose the thunderbolt. Speed wise, they are almost exactly the same, because they are both 4g LTE phones and they have similar processors. If you want to look at a video of these 2 phones against each other, then go to youtube.com, and type in HTC thunderbolt vs samsung droid charge, and look at the video by the channel named "Phonedog" I think in this video the droid charge won, but again it may have features that you will love or hate, so if you don't agree with me and you want to go with the charge, then that will still be a great phone. Hope i helped and good luck

run away to mexico?

Cara E

okay
im 16.
if i run away to mexico and my mom calls the cops here in kansas
and reports me as a run away
what will the cops do in mexico can they do anything or not?
thnx

p.s.
dnt say dnt run away
cuz u dnt kno how bad my father is

Answer
Hrm... well, I won't ask any questions about your personal life, but even if you could cross the border illegally (even with a valid US passport, you can't enter Mexico legally without written permission of a parent because you're under 18), what will you do in Mexico?

If it's hard for an adult American with a highschool degree to get a job here (you need a working visa to work here as a foreigner and they are hard to get unless you have a university degree and already have a place to live in and some income when you come here of several hundred dollars at least), chances are you won't get any decent job.

Unless being a sex slave is a job you'd seriously do because there aren't many other things you could do as a fugitive underage foreigner. Maybe work in a farm in a tiny village, but you'd be paid peanuts with nowhere to sleep and with barely enough money to survive.

As for getting caught. On one hand, bounty hunters can't enter Mexico and US cops can't cross the border either. However, if your mom reports you to be lost and they locate your possible wherabouts in Mexico. Believe me, while the mexican government wouldn't care too much about 1 foreign illegal not bothering anyone, they will care if the US government is putting pressure on them to find you (given they could suspect you were kidnapped which is a very serious crime in Mexico). If some nice family lets you stay with them and you enter this situation, chances are they could arrest the family and send them to 60 years in jail just because you're an American and they want to look efficient with the US even if they knew those people are innocent.

If possible, you could still runaway but within the US's boundaries and live with a friend and still get a safe job, you don't have to learn a new language because if you speak english in Mexico you will stand out a lot and wait till you become 18 and can legally never see your family again (but then will you finish your HS degree and maybe enter college? These are things you have to factor in too).

I don't know how your father is, but many kids your age want to run off because he got angry you smoked weed or found you watching a porn movie and grounded you. Kids your age don't see yet that running away underage has consequences like without even a HS degree, what kind of jobs will you get? Will you have enough to survive?

Unless you're not demanding and don't mind getting a low wage job in a don't ask-don't tell job in a farm or something, you won't really earn enough cash to live very well.

Try to think things out more. It's just for another 1 1/2 years and you could cause someone innocent to go to jail on kidnapping charges. You could mature very much in this time and see things more clearly. If your father is beating you or whatever that's real abuse and not just normal parenting, go to the police. The US takes child abuse pretty damn seriously and you could either end up living with some other relative or you could request a judge to allow you to become a legal adult at age 17.

Super Intense Running Workouts?

Q. I need 5 or so intense workouts that help increase strength as well as speed. Or one of the other. They can involve hills, track work, distance or whatever if you could just share one of your workouts that be awesome! Will rate the best. Thanks. Then tougher the better.

Answer
Interval training workouts.

if you don't have a interval timer you can go to a track and run the straights and jog the turns.

There is another approach. I think its called Fartek. its like run to the mailbox. jog to the corner. Pretty self directed.

If you get an interval timer a whole bunch of opportunities become available. Especially one that can be programmed. a gymboss would work. Casio makes a good interval timer watch for $20.

a watch with a HRM and an interval timer creates a lot more opportunities. if you are going to get a HRM make sure you get one with a good interval timer. I use the Garmin 305.

another option is if you have an iphone or an ipod touch, download interval run. It makes running intervals so much easier.

Anyway, once you have an interval timer you can program it for any number of good workouts.
Here is one:
http://exercise.about.com/library/blsprintinterval.htm
here is another.
http://exercise.about.com/library/blhighintensityaerobicintervalworkout.htm

oh by the way, at gyms most of the machines have some interval training pre- programmed.

samsung galaxy s4 vs iphone 5?

Q. at first i wanted iphone 5,, but now that i read te reviews its says that the battery life sucks and it glithces a little... and the samsung say is better but i dont know if its slow ,cuz my sis has the samsung galaxy s3 and its super slow... also i want a fast simple phone not with to much stuff and a cool one... help me please wich one is better and prices please

Answer
For iPhone 5 v.s. the Galaxy S4. The S4 is a clear winner. The Galaxy S4 also has a higher resolution at a Full HD 1080 x 1920 creating a pixel density of 441ppi. Meanwhile the iPhone 5 has a Retina quality of 640 x 1136, a pixel density of 326ppi. The iPhone 5 has a 1440mAh (5.45Wh) battery which is non-removable while the Galaxy S4 has a larger, and removable, 2600mAh (9.6Wh) battery.

The Galaxy S4 offers a higher resolution front facing camera at 2Mp compared to 1.2Mp. It can record video in Full HD 1080p while the iPhone 5 is limited to 720p.
It has more features than than the iPhoneâs camera which makes it even better.
a. Dual shot- take photos from both cameras so that you can include the photographer in a photo
b. Photo with audio message- record a message before or after a photo to add to a photo
c. Eraser shot- can remove unwanted moving content
d. Drama shot- takes pictures of a moving object and puts the moving object through the whole picture

The Galaxy S4 runs circles around the iPhone 5 when it comes to features, starting with how you interact with the device.
- Air Gestures lets you flip through photos or answer the phone just by waving your hand in front of the S4 (though you have to be close to the screen).
- With Smart Scroll, you can also scroll through a Web article just by tilting the device in your hand or tilting your head.
- Air View is a pretty nifty feature on the S4, which enables you to preview content (such as an email) by hovering your finger just above the display.
- With the WatchOn app, the S4 leverages its built-in IR blaster to control your TV. The app also recommends shows you may want to watch, and even integrates with services like Netflix.
- With Group Play you can get your friends together and let them enjoy your music simultaneously. Wirelessly connect multiple Samsung Galaxy S4 phones to play games and share photos and documents.
- LED indicator- A small LED on the top of your device shows what notifications you got by distinguishing them with colours(For example blue for email, green for charged) This means you can see what the notification was about without putting your screen on. It is extremely useful feature for those than hate wasting time.
- Smartstay- won't turn the screen off if you are still looking at it.
- Smartpause- pauses a video when you turn around and turns it back on when you turn back
- You can record the soundtrack to your photos with this phone so you can remember what was said, played, and heard, not just what it looked like. It adds another layer of excitement to help you relive and share every moment of each picture much more vividly.

Still not impressed with the S4â²s versatility? It also offers S Translate for translating multiple languages (speech and text) and an S Health app for keeping track of your fitness.

So, in the end, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a clear winner. With all of its specs including batter life, camera quality, display, and all of its features, it is safe to say that the S4 trumps the iPhone 5 in more ways than one. I definitely recommend getting an S4 and I actually plan on picking mine up later this week. Hope I helped!

Iphone Vs. the HTC Inspire? Which ones better?

Q. Im interested in getting a new phone, im currently looking at getting either the Iphone or the HTC Inspire. The Iphone cost more but is it worth it? Pros and Cons? Any advice on those two types of phones?

Thanks

Answer
IPHONE

* Thin, sleek design.
* Bright, high-resolution display designed for video playback.
* Slick "multi-touch" interface, "self switching" accelerometer, "proximity sensors", and ambient light sensor.
* Large storage capacity for a mobile phone (8 or 16 GB for iPhone 3G, 8, 16 or 32 GB for iPhone 3GS).
* Built-in support for 3G, wi-fi, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (2.1+EDR for iPhone 3GS).
* GPS support.

INSPIRE

TC Inspire 4G Cons:
Obviously no HDMI connector:

It is nice that the HTC Inspire 4G can record high-resolution 1280 x 720 videos, but we were disappointed not to find any evidence of the Inspire 4G featuring an HDMI port (which is convenient to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV.)

The Inspire 4G weighs 5.78 ounces. It's kind of chubbier-than-usual.
Heavyweight:

5.78 ounces ( 163.9 grams ) is kind of heavy. No matter if you carry it in your pockets or a handbag, you risk finding it a bit chunky.

Smaller battery:

Granted, the 1230 mAh battery will last a certain time, but given this phone's 4.3-inch screen, we would prefer a bigger battery.

Ad - HTC Inspire 4G pros follow

And Now, the Pros:
Faster microprocessor:

The speed of its Qualcomm QSD8255 Scorpion microprocessor (1 GHz) is among the fastest in the current market.

The HTC Inspire 4G comes with a 8-megapixel camera.
High-resolution camera:

Above-average image resolution of 8-megapixe
Widespread operating system:

Because the HTC Inspire 4G is running a very popular operating system, you are more likely to find a great variety of applications and plenty of community support for this phone.
* High-quality pre-installed applications, including a "desktop class" web browser, HTML capable e-mail client, and integrated Google Maps, as well as the potential for thousands of third-party applications via the AppStore.
* Support to read, but not edit, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Adobe PDF files.
* Built-in camera for basic photography (2 megapixels for iPhone 3G, 3 megapixels and video support for iPhone 3GS).
* Inexpensive (but tied to a contract in many countries).

Additional Pros (iPhone 3GS over iPhone 3G):

* Full support for iOS 4.
* Significantly faster than the iPhone 3G (particularly graphics performance -- Open GL ES 2.0 -- which can make a big difference for gaming).
* Improved camera (except for low light performance), with autofocus, macro, and white balance support, and a "tap to focus" feature.
* Video recording support (VGA at 30 FPS, basic "video editing" -- cut the beginning and end of a clip "in camera").
* Support for faster 3G support (7.2 Mbps HSDPA).
* As originally shipped, twice the storage (16 GB or 32 GB rather than 8 GB or 16 GB).
* Modestly better battery life.
* "Oleophobic" oil repellent display.
* Digital compass (particularly useful for orientation on Google Maps).
* VoiceOver & voice control.
* Integrated Nike + iPod support.

Cons (All Models):

* Tied to expensive multi-year contracts in many countries.
* No support to edit Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files (online editing forthcoming).
* No support for Flash.
* Lack of tactile feedback may bother some users.
* Battery life may be insufficient for heavy users.
* Some competitive mobile phones offer superior cameras and additional features.
* Substantially larger capacity iPod models are available for less money per GB.

Good yet inexpensive running (GPS) watch?

Q. I'm looking for a running watch that can monitor my distance, pace, and time, but is simple to use and NOT bulky. So far it seems like the Garmin 405 and Nike plus watches are the best out there.
I'm not interested in the Nike but there are a few bad reviews that scare me away from purchasing it immediately.
Any input?

Answer
If you don't need to download the data to a computer later, there's a cheap soleus model (link below)

You could get an ipod nano, which can track speed & distance via an internal accelerometer. It's fairly accurate in my experience.

The Motorola MOTOACTV looks very nice, with lots of features, but it's pricier and might be on the bulky side.

Running experts: Should I run with a watch or not?

Q. I've ran with my GPS watch for about 2 years now, I kind of alternate between weeks, one week I wear the watch, the next I don't. I've heard many things about watches, like they make you run to fast, and that you should listen to your body instead. I'll be the first to admit running with my watch makes me run a whole lot faster, which I've also been told, running fast all the time is bad for your body and personal times. So, should I run without my watch or with it, I'm trying to improve my times, so which should I do?

Answer
You should run with a watch, but don't try to beat it or run your distance in a certain time (unless, of course, that's your goal). Just start the timer when you begin and stop it when you're done. Run at your own pace, don't over-work yourself, don't be afraid to stop and walk for a short distance if you need to, and you'll be able to note your times and see if/how much you're improving

whats the best lens for the Canon - EOS Rebel T2i 18.0-Megapixel Digital SLR?

hey guys really hard to chose a best answer there all great but i have to go with love helping others so far because he supplyed the most details but theres still a few days also im mainly working with action fotos sorry for not putting that at first.

Answer
There isn't a lens that is best for the camera. The camera does not care. For as long as it's a Canon EF or EF-S mount, it will gladly take the lens and use it to the best of your abilities as a photographer.

You need to choose the lens that is best for you, as a photographer, and of course that fits the specific purpose for which you want to use it. Last but not least - it must be a lens you can afford. Some of the high end lenses easily run into 5 figure price tags!

Often more than one lens is needed for different tasks. However, there are some decent all around solutions. One such lens is Canon 18-200mm lens. It's a great all around lens that you can keep on your camera all vacation long and never have to change. This is very convenient. Of course being over 11x zoom, it's got its shortcomings. It won't be as sharp as primes or lower range zooms, and you are bound to some distortions here and there. Many many people though agree to put up with these shortcomings, because having just one do it all lens is very convenient.

If you want to go with smaller rang lenses, consider 18-55 and 55-200 lenses - cover the same range, weight and cost much less and will probably give a bit better performance. But you'll have to switch them around.

Want to do serious landscape or architecture work? Go wide. Something like 10 or 12mm on the wide side. Bird watching? Wildlife? Spying? A long telephoto, at least 300mm on the long end is in order. Portraits? Get a prime - 35mm or 50mm (no zoom). And so on. Sports? Concerts? You may want a fast telephoto - f/2.8 or so, but they are expensive...

So you really have to define the task to get a specific lens recommendations. Better yet, read some books about photography to get a decent idea of how lenses work, and you may actually be able to judge for yourself then.

Why, in spite of all the advantages of the North over the South, did the Civil War last so long?

fuzzy19

Answer
The south had 2 great things going them

1) Better military leadership. They were able to take what they had and make it last

2) Spirit. Most of the fighting was in the Confederacy, these people were fighting for their homes and land. Think of how big home field advantage can be in sports.

3) Overconfidence on the part of the Union. Civilians came from DC to watch the first batle of Bull Run (or Mannesses Junction if you want to call it that). For these people it was entertainment to watch the Union "whip them rebels".
