What is a good, yet inexpensive GPS watch for running?

Joseph

I'm looking for a GPS watch that isn't too bulky, isn't too expensive, and comes with renowned, interactive software that my girlfriend can use without throwing a fit and kicking my computer. It doesn't need to have a heart rate monitor and it doesn't have to be gender specific.

Also, I am willing to download software if there are better ones out there for running. I know all about Map My Run, but I'd rather have it work with the watch.

Thanks

Answer
I really like Garmin GPS watches and the Garmin Forerunner 405 is probably the cheapest in the series that still has GPS capabilities.

GPS watch for running?

zeroblank5

I'm looking for a good GPS watch for running. Ideally it would be able to track distance, heart rate and calories. However I greatly dislike those heart rate straps that you have to wear so if possible I'd like one without that. Anyone have any recommendations?

Answer
I think at the moment is the very popular one is Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor. As around 1,065 have 5 star reviews from 1649 and the rest is 4 star. So it so it is reliable and cheap now as you save around 57% of price that is $171.45. So you buy it for $128.54 and delivered free if you are in US. So is super cheap

Good running watches?

hanako0848

I'm running cross country this year as a senior and this is the first time my coach has asked us to buy a watch. I'm not sure what kind of watch to get....The coach wants a watch a that will be able to keep my mile splits. Could you give me some ideas? I don't want to spend more than thirty dollars on this watch. thanks.

Answer
I use Timex Iron man watches, they are cheap and you can get your splits, and they also have a timer so you can use them for interval running.
I think my last one was less than $30.

Do theatre times include the interval?

malzo

Say if i am going to watch Les Miserables at Queen's theatre, london, and they say it is 3 hours long... is that including the 15 minute interval? or is that extra (and therefore my total stay 3 hours 15 minutes?)

Answer
Yes, it includes the interval. Remember that the theater is not a movie, and the show might run longer or shorter depending on the pace of the actors (so don't plan on being somewhere else right afterwards).

Tips for a beginning runner?

elephant.f

I was planning on starting the Couch to 5K running plan. Is this a good plan? What are some good stretches I can do before running for it? Is there a special way that one needs to breathe while running? Is there a special way that one's food needs to strike the ground? Is there a 'best' brand of running shoes or does it even matter? How often should running shoes be replaced? Is there a way to know how long a certain trail is if the distance is not posted at the beginning of the trail? Are there any foods I need to add to my vegetarian diet to accomadate for my new routine? When I have completed the program, should I focus on running the 5K faster or should I focus on running a greater distance? Also, does one run differently in colder weather than in warmer weather? Thank you so much if you are able to answer any of the above questions. I have no idea what I am doing. I have allowed my body to become out of shape...I do not play any sports at school. But now I realize I need to change :) Thanks again!

Answer
Couch to 5K is great.

Here's a link to some basic stretches: http://www.pccoach.com/newsletters/May05/stretching.htm
Don't forget to hold each stretch for 20-40 seconds. You'll want to warm up your muscles by walking before you stretch or do "dynamic stretches" before the run and then do static stretches afterward.
Go to a running store that specializes in running and have them look at your feet and help you select a running shoe for you. The best shoe for you will vary greatly depending on whether your foot angles in or out (pronates), the height of your arches, your stride, how overweight you are - do you need extra cushioning because extra weight is harder on the joints?, and whether you have had other injuries (knees, hips, ankles). Not only should they measure your foot, they should also watch you run in them - most have a treadmill or some little ones will even let you take them out for a lap around the block. Don't worry about replacing them or what comes after the program until you run your first 5K and see how you feel.

Each person is different. I immediately went from my first 5K to train for a 10K and then a half. I'm slower, but I like distance and the time to think in my day while I run. My DH is a cross-country guy from way back, but 5K is the right distance for him (bad knees/feet that can't handle the long-distance runs on a regular basis in his old age) and he can works speed drills and loves hills. Just get started. :-) Also, see if you can find a 5K Fun Run in your area - now's not a great season for it, but they're out there. Here's a link to help you find one. Actually having a race as your goal is great motivation to keep going if you get discouraged or tired along the way. http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/racefinder/0,7151,s6-239-283-284-0-0-0-0-0,00.html

Quotes from The Kite Runner that show how Amir changed throughout the book?

Chris

I need quotes that show how Amir has changed from beginning, middle and end.

Answer
the kite runner is one of the best books i ever read.
since i don't have a copy i will give u some instances rather than quotes.
1 Amir in the beginning places the money he gets us birthday gift under Hassan's bed to get rid of him. in the end he places money under the bed of afghan family as token of gratitude. he turns considerate.
2 the only thing Hassan wanted was to please Amir. initially Amir watched silently as his half brother was molested, just because he wanted to please his father. in the end it is his turn to please Hassan's son.

it is a very touching story

Running training question?

Ruby

I want to start running, and I'd like to work my way upto a 5k run. Any advice on how I could start with this one, at the moment I can barely run for 5 minutes

Answer
The hardest part might be putting your trainers on and leaving the front door. This is true - you feel that all your neighbours are watching and things like that but they are actually more interested in the latest soap on TV (sad lives that they lead - at least you are going out into the world).

So pop your trainers on and off you go. Do your barely running for 5 minutes and then start to walk. Walk until you get your breath back and then run again for another stretch of barely 5 minutes, then walk to get your breath back again. Repeat this for 15 minutes and then turn round and do the same to get home - this gives you a 30 minute work out.

Rest a few days and try again, but this time try to run as far with each section - or further (even if it is just 5 steps further). Over a few weeks you will find that the time that you spend walking will reduce and the amount of running that you do in 30 minutes will increase. You might get faster as well.

Oh, as for speed - don't set off too fast, set off thinking "I can run faster than this" and try to run and be able to sing in your head - that is a good pace to go for.

The best way to start running is to go out and do the run-walk technique. If you want save a run section to run back down your street - and when you do run with your head up and run 'with style', to give a good feeling end to your run (rather than staggering home barely able to walk).

It will take a little while to get there for a complete beginner, however you will surprise yourself how quickly you improve.

Running training pace?

reloaded19

i am a runner for my high school. my training plan is suppose to be 8 minute miles for my easy runs. i run outside and when i run i don't know if i am doing 8 minute miles. A run i did last week the first mile was 7:15 but then my next mile was 8:10. how do i know what pace i am running while i am running. i don't want to buy a garmin watch because i already have a watch. so do not reccomend that.

Answer
I hate running with a watch. I feel that you basically become a slave towards time, it's a big mental thing for me. My advice is usually "run how you feel" for the beginning portion of your summer training. Just run 6 days a week at how you feel for about two-three training weeks. After that, I would say you will be fine doing 8 but I think 7:30 is more beneficial to a summer training program.

Now, how do you now if you are at 8 minute pace? If its 5 miles, take the first mile as a warmup. Go slower than usual and check your watch, if it says "8:15" you now know to speed up a bit. Don't go out faster than your goal pace for easy distance. Go slower for your first mile than you can find out what your pace is.

Best Running GPS watch with Software under $200 -- Timex/Garmin/Nike?

m

I'm a high school runner looking to amp up my training by getting a GPS watch.
In the watch I want a one screen with a real-time pace (min/mile), distance, and time.
I don't want to spend more than $200, really. I don't intend to get a heart rate monitor, yet.

I don't know if I want a Timex or Garmin watch or even a Nike Sportwatch.

If I were to get a Timex, I'd consider the Run trainer 1.0 GPS or the Run Trainer 2.0 GPS
My concern with Timex is the TrainingPeaks software. I'd like to have a FREE reliable software to analyze workouts and runs. I believe the Run Trainer 2.0 works with Strava, but I don't know if that
is free or if would be useful.

If I were to get a Garmin I'd consider the forerunner 110, forerunner 210, or possibly the forerunner 10. The forerunner 10 seems like it doesn't have the features I want though. I wouldn't want to shift between screens on a run. I also have no idea if Garmin Connect is any good.

My friend has the Nike Sportwatch, and it seems nice. I don't know if I want this one because it Garmin is reputable with GPS systems and Timex is great with watches -- Nike makes shoes. I also don't know if the Nike Sportwatch has a good software.

I really don't want to have to use a foot pod.

So, I'd like to know of these watches, which has the features I want (real time pace, time and distance in one screen), that comes with the best software, and is easiest to use for the price.

Thank you very much.

Answer
I'd generally stick with the Garmins. You should find something that is at least compatible with a heart rate monitor -- you will want one, and if you want to improve your training, it's virtually a must. I would also personally err on the side of getting something that will last you awhile, rather than going too low end. If you go too low, you're just going to get frustrated, and in a couple months go buy something higher end anyway.

The Garmin 310XT has been out awhile (so the price has come down from being $400-500 where it was when it came out), and now runs right at the $200 mark while including a heart monitor. It's essentially the waterproof version of the Forerunner 305, which was Garmin's #1 model for a very very long time. (The 305 is now discontinued and thus even more expensive.) The only other model I'd really recommend is the 910, but that's probably out of your price range, and it doesn't really include anything significant beyond the 310XT.

Do be forewarned that all the GPS watches have some difficulty with real time pacing. It's going to jump around a lot if you use the basic "pace" feature. Most people end up using lap pace, which let them measure their pace since hitting the lap button. Garmin keeps trying to improve the real time pacing measurement, but I think they still need to try and average it over a 10-20 second sample period. It's virtually impossible to have accurate real time pace with GPS satellites, but lap pace works fine for most.

Garmin Connect is likely fine for you, but you also might want to look into SportTracks. They're on version 3.1 now which isn't free, but the old version 2 is likely perfect for you and is entirely free if you can find it. (Over time you might consider upgrading to the paid version 3 if you like it, like most do.)

Anyway, at the $200 price range, I'd readily be going after the Garmin 310XT *with* heart monitor. And it should keep you happy a good while, too -- you won't be missing features, nor find anything else that can get more data on one screen or be so customizable.

What is the best watch to use for swimming, running, and biking?

Ashley Kou

I want to use a watch to be able to swim, and I know alot of watches out there don't even pick up signal even if I place the watch in my swimming cap. Is there a watch out there that I can swim with, I know the satellite can't go through water so wearing it on my cap would be best, I just need to know if there is something oug there that can do so.

Answer
The best watch I would use that I know for a fact will give you the results you need in terms of keeping a GPS track on you while in water, is the Garmin Forerunner 310XT. I have purchased and used this watch intensely and the battery life is nothing of short. It lasts my entire triathlon and doesn't shy away from durability. I once dropped my watch mid race and it got ran over by another cyclist ahah, here is the link of a review where I found some information on the watch in the sources section.

best running watches with gps?

yummmmm

i need a gps watch for running and i was going to buy the nike plus gps sport watch but it does not have a stop watch which is another thing i need! so what are some of the best gps watches with a stopwatch? also pros and cons of the watch would be great!

i tried researching but it gets so confusing so thanks in advance!

Answer
I have a Garmin GPS 301 watch. I like it's functionality, but the batteries die pretty quickly. You need to charge it almost daily. Even if left in your drawer, the batteries are slowing dying. Even off.

I have the standard Nike Plus Sportband, no GPS, I really like the convenience of it, but yeah, no stopwatch.
I am interested in the NIke GPS, but $200 is far too steep right now.

How good are Garmin forerunner watches?

Bruins_Fan

The ones that use GPS to tell ur pace, heart rate, distance...etc

Answer
I have a Garmin Forerunner 301, it does everything I want it to do, and when I need to replace it, it'll be with another Garmin. It's an early model, I bought it just as the next model was being released, and I understand that the later ones are better, but it's not worth me upgrading just yet.
It logs the distance and speed, along with my heart rate, and has different settings for running and cycling.
It takes a bit of time to pick up the satellite signals, and can lose the signal when you're near tall buildings or trees, but that doesn't happen very often.
I also found that the heart rate signal is better when running near power lines, my old HRM used to give up when I was running near an electrified railway line, but the Garmin is unaffected.
Hope this helps.

should i get a heart rate monitor? which one?

sim

i am just starting on my exercise routine and was wondering if it would be good to get a heart rate monitor? if yes then which is like the cheapest one that i can get? i dont want to spend a lot on it..

Answer
Congratulations on starting an exercise routine. Your interest in using a heart rate monitor is a great way to start. It will give you feedback on the intensity of your training and can be kind of like your coach or personal trainer whether you're walking or doing intervals. My clients use heart rate training to stay engaged in their cardiovascular training, get feedback on the intensity of their workouts, and to keep track of their progress.
There are so many heart rate monitors out there, how do you choose the right one for you?
First of all, you should look at the ones that DO feature a chest strap. The strap has electrodes inside of it and transmit a digital or coded signal from your heart to your watch. The type without the chest strap takes heart rate from your wrist and will require you to touch and/or hold a button on the watch while you wait for your heart rate to appear on the screen. If you are running stairs, intervals, riding a bike, or doing something where it would be inconvenient or dangerous to touch a button, you will soon find that this type of monitor will be frustrating and rather useless to you. The wrist heart rate watches are often cheaper than the chest strap versions, but safe yourself the frustration and check out some of these brands first:

Polar: These are very well known heart rate monitors. There are plenty of styles for beginners who don't need anything but heart rate only to advanced triathletes and olympic cyclists where the watch will practiacally cook you dinner!
***The disadvantage of Polar is that you MUST send the watch/chest strap back in to the company for the battery to be replaced. There is a small fee for this. There is no consumer access to the battery compartment on the strap and they will not guarantee water resistance if the watch compartment has been opened. If a unit has been sitting on the shelf for a long time, the battery may be "old" and go sooner than you may expect.

Nike: Nike makes some good and attractive HR monitors with many different price ranges, features, and styles that are marketed to women, men, and both. User may change the batteries

Timex: They make some very versatile HR monitors and they are tough watches that are very well made. I own a women's Timex. User may change the batteries in both chest strap and watch. I use my HR monitor watch as a regular sports watch even when I'm not using the strap.

NOTE: shop around at a sporting goods store for a watch that you like, try it on, ask the associate questions about them. Then check out EBAY, AMAZON, etc. I just purchased another BRAND new women's Timex HR monitor on Ebay for $26 plus shipping.

HOW to use your HR monitor: One of the most comprehensive sites for heart rate training is http://www.heartzones.com. There are short educational articles about HR training and some training templates. They will also tell you what a heart rate zone is and how to find out which ones to exercise in and for how long as well as how to progress your workouts. You will notice that the more fit you become, the longer it will take for your HR to rise, it will take more effort to make it go as high as it did when you first started exercising, and the faster it will drop, or recover, when you rest.

Heart rate training is a great way train whether you are a beginner or an Olympic athlete. Your heart rate is unique to you and getting familiar with it is a wise way to go. Congratulations with starting your exercise routine. Stick with it with your new coach-your HR monitor and the best of luck to you.

Can you use a heart rate monitor if you're under 18?

Alexa

I found a Polar Woman's Heart Rate Monitor that I want to get for when I exercise because I want to be able to tell how many calories I'm burning, what my target heart rate should be etc. The only problem is that I'm 15 and for all Heart Rate Monitors you have to put in your age, weight, height, gender etc. I'm afraid that my age won't be on there since I'm only 15. Does anyone have a HR monitor and know if people under the age of 18 can you use them? Thank you!

Answer
Iâm using a Polar too. Youâll get a kick out of it when you need new batteries. They have good customer service (you cannot change the battery yourself or it would lose the waterproof quality). Every day, I knew exactly where my watch was. Polar is the opposite of Chinese made crap (my chest strap says âmade in Finlandâ).

Do the 220 minus age method so you can calculate your THR (Target Heart Rate) zone whatever your age is.
220 â 15 = 205 would be your MHR (Maximum Heart Rate).

The Heart Healthy Zoneâ¦50-59% MHR
The Temperate Zoneâ¦60-69 MHR
The Aerobic Zoneâ¦70-79% MHR
The Anaerobic Threshold Zoneâ¦80-89% MHR
The Redline Zone 90-100% MHR

A heart rate monitor is not about calorie expenditure, itâs about staying in your THR zone, knowing when to walk and when to jog so you donât get exhausted and get the best workout without getting up to the Anaerobic Threshold Zone (above 80% of your MHR) where fat burning shuts down.

Your heart rate is not about your gender and weight and height. Itâs not the BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) based on gender, weight, height and age or about calorie expenditure with exercising based on your weight, speed and duration (you should know your average per minute and just time yourself).

A heart monitor is only about your age and also if you have a naturally lower heart rate (10% of people) or a naturally higher heart rate (10% of people). Most people, like me, are among the 80% of the people who can use the simple 220 minus age method.

In studies, you can have RHR (Resting Heart Rate) with 40 beats difference between two people having the same height and weight and age and fitness level, like 2 guys on the same football team, one with a higher natural RHR and the other with a natural lower RHR.

Know your own personal RHR (you can only take it in the morning when waking up, over several days to get an average, before getting out of bed...never during the day).

Even when you know your THR zone, you should adjust them depending on how you feel.
You can always adapt your THR zones (lowering your bpm...beats per minutes) for that particular day when youâre a little under the weather or did not sleep so well so you still need to know how you should feel. If you cannot say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious without having to take a couple of breaths...you need to slow down and walk for a minute.

Once you get out of breath, you would enter the Anaerobics Threshold Zone (80% MHR) where fat burning shuts down (itâs used to improve cardiovascular health). Hopefully your goal is not to burn body fat. But if it is, you need to slow down and stay in the Aerobic Zone.
You walk/jog, using walking as a warm up at the beginning, a cool down at the end, and in between to get back down in your THR zone.

Your body does not really care if youâre walking or jogging but cares about your heart beats. When walking fast while recuperating from jogging and to stay in your zone, you get the same fitness benefits as when jogging. Some people like to think of it as âtrickingâ their body because theyâre walking but itâs the same as jogging for their body. Others see it as HIIT (interval training). I see it as trying to control a wild horse if my heart starts to beat too fast and get above the Aerobic Zone (which I donât need).

They are so many variables (age/weight/gender, fitness level, endurance, stamina, strength, health as of today, diet...) so itâs a good idea to rely on your heart so you donât have to worry about your speed, which should slightly improve automatically as you get stronger, for the same physical effort.

Once you figure out how to program your heart rate monitor for your THR zone and choose the zone that fits you...you just have to listen to your watch to know when to speed up and when to slow down, while getting the most efficient workout without ever feeling like youâre out of breath or exhausted, just naturally winding down when youâre running out of blood sugar so you need to cool down, stop and eat to replenish.

My watch beeps, I slow down...then it beeps again, I speed up, then it beeps again, I slow down, then it beeps again, I speed up unless Iâm in my cooling down mode.

You choose your THR zone depending on your goal and your fitness level. Your goal could be burning body fat (79% of MHR or less) or improving cardiovascular health and endurance (if youâre in great shape, training for speed or a marathon...80 to 89% of MHR when fat burning shuts down). What counts is how fast your heart beats. You need to constantly speed up or slow down to stay in the same zone.

If youâre gasping for air in your aerobic zone, progressively adjust the heart beats range by 5bpm down increments or if youâre cruising along when youâre supposed to be in the anaerobic Threshold zone (when fat burning shuts down), add a few heart beats to your range.

Shoes For Jogging: ''Nike LunarGlide+2'' or ''ReeBok Zig Pulse II''?

FlakTak

I'm getting new shoes for jogging soon, and I can't decide between
''Nike LunarGlide+ 2'' and ''ReeBok Zig Pulse II''

Which is better for jogging?
Which will last longer?

I've been looking at both for a while and can't decide

Answer
When you choose shoes for running or jogging, brands don't matter - it's all about which shoe is the best fit for your particular foot shape, stride, body mechanics, etc. In fact, running in improperly fitted shoes is one of the leading causes of injuries among runners. That's why running shoes are typically fitted by pros at stores that specialize in running.

First, you need to find a store that specializes in runners & running in your area (preferably not a big chain sporting goods store) & tell the clerk that you need to be fitted for running shoes. They should measure your foot in several different directions, watch you walk and run both barefoot and in shoes, and have you try on several different types of shoe. (If they don't do this, go somewhere else.) Don't worry about what the shoes look like or what brand they are - none of that matters. Go with the ones that feel the best on your feet.

Running shoes typically last around 300 - 500 miles, depending on the runner, so it's important to track your mileage somewhere; after that, the midsoles wear out (even though the outer part of the shoe may look fine) and the shoe will no longer support your foot safely anymore when you run. In terms of making them last closer to 500 miles, there are a few things you can do:

1) Wear your running shoes ONLY for running and no other activities. The motion involved in non-running activities can cause the midsole, which supports your foot & absorbs most of the force, to break down faster.

2) Never machine wash or dry your shoes. This also causes the materials to break down faster. Wipe them down with a wet clothe if they get dirty and use foot powder if they get smelly. Also keep them somewhere with lots of ventilation so they're able to dry out quickly.

3) If you can afford it, get two pairs and alternate. There is research that alternating between two pairs of shoes helps them last longer than they would if you wore only one pair until it wore out and then only the second pair. (The extra time off your feet seems to give the material in the midsole more time to decompress.)

Hope that helps - best of luck in your search! :)

What can make your heart rate go up and down?

mosswald87

ok so i am a runner. i have this watch that can tell me my heart rate (really cool). when i am watching t.v. or laying in bed i can get it down to about 43. normal it is somewhere around 73. any way today i checked it and it was really high. like 120. i just had a soccer game but now i have been sitting for about 2 hours. then i start looking at it and it goes down to 83 then it rapidly goes back you to like 110. then it goes back down. i feel fine the only thing that does feel right is my stomach. it hurts but i think it is just b/c i am hungry. that or i have to take a dump. it is not either b/c i ate dinner didn't help then i took a dump didn't help. does anyone why my heart rate is messed up

Answer
First, make sure you watch is still working! Take your heart rate the old fashon way by finding your pulse and counting it for 15 seconds then multiplying by 4. To find your pulse, made a tight first with your right hand, palm up. You should see some tendons pop up on the palm side of your wrist. Use the fingers of your left hand to press lightly to the right of these tendons and you should fill your pulse. Take your pulse like this every 15 to 20 minutes to see if the rates that you get fluctuate like those on your watch did. If not, no worries.

If so, and especially if you start having other symptoms, you should seak medical attention.

Could i put my beta in the tank with them... i have all the things i need for the tutles 60 wat light and a filter a floating rock thing-a-ma-bob the tank is filled about 75 percent of the way... So can i put my beta fish in with "humpfry and Rockafeller" (my turtles)?

-TK

Answer
GULP !!! THEY EAT ALL KINDS OF FISH!!

****Austinsturtlepage.comâ has all info on care and feeding RESCUING and PICTURES for all land and aquatic turtles.
*** Ten gallons per inch of each turtle!! Sliders, westerns, easternâs, cooterâs , midland, painted, map, yellow bellied ,are all are basically the same and require the same basic care.
If you are sold a turtle under 4â then it is illegal and gives of a sickness called salmanela.

They will bite VERY hard. Under 4" they carry a disease called 'salmonella'. So you should wash after every handling ANY size turtle or reptile anyway

** EACH 4" turtle needs a 55 gallon tank to start anything would be cruel. Two turtles 75 to 100 gallons.

***And my pictures don't lie. All ages and all sizes get along as long as their is allot for SWIM ROOM and PLENTY TO EAT! They can become cannibalistic if you have 2 or more turtles and a small environment. They will kill off the smallest and then fight for the tank for themselves.Mine get along cause they have an abundance of food to eat...we do get a few lil fights cause one female to 4 males...poor gal!

They NEED calcium and protein they get it from the fish meat and the fish bones. Drop 30 or 50 or so feeder guppies or small goldfish or just drop in the tank and watch them disappear in a few days!
Did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light UVA/UVB for up to 8 hrs a day for the vitamin D that they need to grow.
TOSS in a bird cattle bone in the water for calcium that will promote better shell growth, it will dissolve real slowly and if they eat it thatâs fine!!
**Remember, you need a heater...set at 83 / 85 degrees. If water is cold they will stop eating!
Plus I also feed dried cubed blood worms or tubiflex worms or pellets at least 5 times a week for my five..
They can have garden worms which I collect after a good rain and dump them in the pond, also meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, slugs, tadpoles, ghost shrimp , dragon flies and anything that moves, but only as a treat.
They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are bad for them, any other leafy greens will do) for vitamin A that they need at least 4 to 5 times a week.
They love grapes and strawberries and squash , apples cut up..
**** If these are hatchlings a 1â and a tad over they may need to have their live food half dead by leaving the fish out of water for a few minutes (10minutes) and put in the tank. That way the baby can get the meat he needs and the fish canât out run the baby turtle.
Plus âsome leafy greenâ and vitamin A âfruitsâ cut up a COUPLE times a week.â Swollen cloudy eyes comes from lack of Vitamin

but I don't know about that hammock..then there's shipping

the one you picked looks perfect, but watch for plastic chewing.

You don't want a giant cage that's all platforms and tubes, because you still want lot's of running space and places to put their toys.

You could try building your own cage! I hear bin cages are great for hamsters, but don't know about rats.

A really cheap cage would to just get an aquarium..but like a really big one, like a 20 gal.

This is a site of ALL rat supplies, but the stuff is REALLY expensive. You could still check it out, though. Maybe you'll find something else you need. And sometimes, you get what you pay for!

This one is pretty cheap, but rat's need companions don't they? I don't know how well this one would work.

Here's a list of the 9 top cages for Rats, but I havn't checked them out yet so I don't know how much they are.

Beginner at running????

Felquish

I've played sports that especially required a lot of running like basketball and softball or maybe a lot of stamina or endurance like swimming. I, however, have never really been a runner and I never really tried to "get better" at it because I was just always out of breath and I just hated it. A few months ago, I learned about the breathing count thing and learned that I do best with counting two over and over again.
Anyways, what program should I do to allow me to run better than I do correctly? I've heard about the couch to running program but I'm not so sure because the other day, I was running in the hallways of my school with some other girls and we went for fifteen minutes straight. We stopped to wait for the ones behind but other than that, we were running all over the place. I was near cramps two times but other than that and getting tired near the end, I was fine.
Also, what type of athletic wear should I look into especially if I were to run outside in the cold?

Answer
Obtain a running watch, running gloves, arm warmers and a sweater if you're that cold. Just run everyday and tell yourself it will get easier the more you run. If you can get on a treadmill, use that to find your rhythm.

What are the differences between the Garmin Forerunner 210 and 405? And which is better?

Alex

I already know the price differences.
Thanks.

Answer
210
Take it Further

For runners who want more training capabilities, Forerunner 210 lets you create customized interval sessions and see your pace for each interval. If youâre using the 210 with the foot pod, you will later be able to see your cadence, or steps per minute, when you upload your data to Garmin Connect.

Follow Your Heart

Some versions of our Forerunner 210 come bundled with our premium soft strap heart rate monitor to display your heart rate in beats per minute. It has five heart rate zones, which you can customize based on your exact zones. You can also set up heart rate alerts to notify you when you are above or below your targets. Forerunner 210 provides heart rate-based calorie computations so you can more accurately track your calories burned.

Outdoors or In

We took the easy-to-use operations of the Forerunner 110 and added indoor capabilities, making the 210 the perfect sport watch for those who like options. For outdoor runs, Forerunner 210 uses GPS to accurately record your time, pace and distance. To track that same data at the gym, snap the foot pod¹ onto your shoe and youâre good to go. Using advanced accelerometer technology, the foot pod collects and sends precise data about your movements, gathering distance and speed data that is 98 percent accurate for most users, right out of the box.

For even more options, Forerunner 210 also works with certain indoor fitness equipment so you can track and store data from a treadmill run or an indoor cycling workout. This capability helps you bridge the gap between your indoor and outdoor fitness activities so you can continually track your progress. See a list of fitness facilities and compatible equipment.

Store, Analyze and Share

Whether youâre training for a race or launching a healthier lifestyle, youâll love the motivation that comes from reviewing your workouts online. Tracking your data is simple with Garmin Connectâ¢, our website for free data analysis and sharing. Just upload to Garmin Connect from your PC or Mac, then see the route you traveled on a map, view a summary of your workout data, create goals and more. For indoor activities when the GPS isnât in use, you wonât see mapping in Garmin Connect, but youâll still have a record of your workout data.

405
Watch Results

Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved. You even can download recorded courses to compete against previous workouts or race a Virtual Partner®. Customize Forerunnerâs data screens for instant feedback while you train.

Use with Ease

Sport watch and personal trainer, Forerunner 405 gives you the best of both worlds in a sleek, stylish package. This high performance watch is easy to use and comfortable to wear when not training. Simply tap the touch bezel to change screens without fumbling for a button. Forerunner 405 comes in 2 colors â black or green â to fit your style.

Run, Sync, Store and Share

Once youâve logged the miles, innovative ANT+⢠wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The dataâs just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect⢠or our optional Garmin Training Center® software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

Share Wirelessly

With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select âtransferâ to send your information to nearby units.

Track Heart Rate

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

Cross-Train

Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You also can add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

Lock Onto Satellite Signals

Forerunner 405 sports a unique design that gives the GPS antenna a better view of the sky, so it can get a stronger signal during your run. And its high-sensitivity GPS receiver provides improved tracking under trees and near tall buildings.

Any suggestions for Running Watches???!?

Aaron

i want a watch with a pacer sort of like the garmin watch, any suggestions?

Answer
There are several options for a pacer-though garmin has been a front runner.

These include:

The NEW BALACE N8 TRAINER ($150) delivers basic heart-rate, speed, and distance tracking at a decent price. Unlike the other watches here, the N8 comes with both a heart-rate strap (although not a particularly comfortable one) and a quarter-sized footpod. You can set the display several ways to prominently show pace and heart rate, and you can cycle through other nice-to-know metrics, like cadence and step count, across the bottom. However, we did find the scrolling display quite hard to read on the go and it provides the least detail among the heart-rate trainers we tested. nbwebexpress.com

For runners interested in studying as much workout information as possible, the GARMIN FR60 ($99) is a wrist-top professor. The watch measures heart rate and calories via the included chest strap and, if you add the optional footpod ($99), it tracks speed, cadence, and distance. It also sucks up workout stats from ANT+ enabled cardio machines at the gym and wirelessly uploads all the numbers to Garmin's Web site, where you can slice and dice them into eye-pleasing charts. We especially liked how the watch's virtual partner showed how far behind (or ahead) you were of the target pace.

Getting off the couch and up to speed can be the most difficult thing for a new runner, but the NIKE+ SPORTBAND ($59) holds your hand along the way. During runs, the watch pulls signals from the included footpod, displaying speed, distance, and elapsed time. When the run is done, you can upload this info to the Nike+ Web site, where you can learn more about your training trends by plotting charts for speed, distance, and estimated calorie counts. Take note, however, that this watch is as basic as it gets. You won't get any heart-rate measurements, nor will it even count laps. nikerunning.com

Where can I find a professional sports watch for running?

motermax

I want one that measures your pulse and how many steps you take and how far you go at what speed, is there any like that? Money isn't really an issue but cheaper would be good.

Answer
I really like Nike+ SportWatch GPS, I bought mine here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WIUDGM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004WIUDGM&linkCode=as2&tag=acomprar-20

I've run 6 marathons so far (a little over 1 per year), and always love to have new technology to play with during training. I bought the Nike Sportwatch shortly after it came out. I was not impressed. It really liked a lot of critical features, and the website was constantly having issue.

Multiple months and 600+ mileson it later, I'm happy to say that I really enjoy it. Nike has been incredible about this launch. Every couple of months they've continuously added more and more new features. The website is still slow, but they are launching a new one in ealy 2012. The new features on this watch put it among the best out there.

New features:
- Walk/Run timer (interval timer as well)
- Avg, Pace
- Improved Mapping
- Set time on the device (no computer needed)
- Incredibly fast satellite connection (even in the city)
- Auto calibration of foot pod
- Faster upload speeds to add your runs
- Integration with Facebook

All in all, a great watch. This one will work for new runners and advanced runners. The only people that this isn't a great choice or is ultramarathon ruuners. Battery life with GPS is 8-10 hours...not long enough for a 50-80 KM.

Having owned Polar RS800, Polar RCX5, Garmin 305, Garmin 310XT, and Garmin 210, I would put this up there as one of my faorites. The website is the best one out there, and the sites detailed training programs are worth using to achieve your best time yet.

THE WORLD: What do you think of the London 2012 Olympics so far?

Chloe

Opening cermony?
Sport?
Athletes?
The city?
The home crowd?
Medal table?
Better than previous Games?

I'm from Newcastle in England and I've just came back from London a few days ago. The atmosphere there is incredible. Unfortunately I couldn't get tickets to any events but being there was amazing all the same. I think London and the UK in general are doing such a fantastic job at welcoming the world.

Answer
The Opening ceremonies were pretty prime, really. Awesome encapsulation of some of the unique qualities of British culture and history. I loved the NHS part with the Marry Poppins kicking Voldemort's ass, as narrated by JK Rowling. Damn that was cool. The house party was laggy and I rolled my eyes throughout the entire social-media romance routine because it felt like such a ploy to attract young users. I love social media but, serious IOC, I'm not watching the opening ceremonies for adoration of facebook and twitter. Overall it was super fun though. I think the fact that they wouldn't have a moment of silence for the athletes murdered at the 1972 games because it was 'political', all the while commemorating the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the London tube was absolute hypocritical.

The sports have been ho-hum. Badminton's scandal was, honestly, more funny than any else but the whole fencing issue is just depressing. I felt bad for the Korean. She got robbed because of a fifteen year old volunteer's timing mistake? Pretty shitty organization.

As for the athletes, its as to be expect I guess. Phelps, Bolt, blahblahblah. All very impressive. I think the people I'm most impressed with are Douglas, who's the first non-whtie woman to win the all around title, and the South-African runner who's a double amputee. Also love that all countries now have female representation. That's a big step forward! Very excited to see the Federer/Murray rematch (stupid tape delay).

I love London. Spent a year studying in England and I adore the city. Media in Canada hasn't really focused a whole lot on the crowd. Seems like they really love their athletes from the cheering when their people win.

Medal table is as expected. USA and China beating it out for number one. No shockers there.

Well, I'm coming off an olympic high with the winter games being held in my hometown in 2010, so I have to say no. I mean, Canada won the most gold medals at those games! That's fantastic! I loved watching my country-mates win on home soil. I love hockey. I loved watching the gold medal goal soar into the American net. But in terms of summer games, I have to say they've been pretty top notch! Better than Athens for sure.

identify the differences in training method between sprinters and marathone runners?

ah_chu46

identify the differences in training method between sprinters and marathone runners

Answer
It's all in the approach to the running sport.

- Stamina and Speed are the most important traits to the Sprinter. A wide variety of exercises can be tried, but they all have to be quick ones, or exercises that can be done quickly.
- Stamina and Endurance are the most important traits to the Marathon Runner. The best idea is to run long distances.

- Sprinters run quick short races, and they train to have a good lung capacity, to start as quickly as possible, and to get an adrenaline boost right when they start the race. By the time the adrenaline is burned off and the fatigue poisons build up in the body the race is over. The sprinter can commit all of their energy at the start (or for long sprints in the middle) of the run. A sprinter is ready to run another race in 20-40 minutes. They rebuild their strength quickly; good sprinters can run 2-3 races in one meet. Sprinters also run on the best track, smooth and level with either a tar of gravel surface, few sprints are ever run in the rain.

- Marathon Runners don't want a quick boost of adrenaline, because the fatigue poisons in the muscles can lead to cramps. They need a good lung capacity, and endurance. Where a sprinter wants to go as fast as possible, the Marathon Runner wants to go at a steady pace for long distances. Marathon Runners want to meter their strength out over a long period of time, while maintaining a fast rate of speed. When a Marathon Runner approaches the finish line his/her strength is all but spent and he can't run any faster. He may also take a few days to recover from the ordeal. Marathon runners often run on roads, but in smaller Marathons they may run on sidewalks. They run up and down hills and around gentile curves. They have to be able to run over any type of surface, even in the rain.

- The single best training for a Sprinter is to run very fast races, then wait 5-10 minutes and run again. Jumping jacks and fast exercise are best to train with. The exercise sessions should be short and very quickly done. Then after a short rest period to do the exercises again. Swimming will help to build lung capacity, and train their breathing. Again they should swim the length of the pool quickly, rest and then swim back as quickly as possible. Sissicor kicks and leg lifts while moving them in and out are good training methods. Sit-ups and Pushups will give general strength, stretching exercises, especially with the legs are very important. Football drill exercises are also good; the sprinter runs in place quickly and then makes sudden moves as directed by the trainer (drop, do a few pushups, get back up and run, run to the left or the right and so on). Watching the trainer for these sudden moves improves the reflexes and takes their minds off the pain. Sprinters have to move fast enough that the pain doesn't have time to affect them. Another training method is the endless relay race. Place 6 sprinters on a track at equal distance and have them run a relay race. Each runner sprints forward, passes off the baton and rests, then when the baton comes back to them they run a sprint again.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_%28race%29
âBiological factors for runners
Some biological factors that can determine a sprinter's potential are:
Muscular strength (more important than in longer events)
Adrenaline use
Anaerobic respiration capacity (not as important in longer events - some of the shorter sprints can be run without having to breathe at all)â

- The single best training for a Marathon Runner is for them to run long distances, and keep running for hours. Bicycles are a good training for Marathon Runners, they can rest on the down slope and push harder on the climb, however they should keep pedaling all the time. Push-ups build strength and improve the chest muscles, while sit-ups improve the abdominal muscles; leg lifts with a long hold are also very good. To a Marathon Runner pain is a constant companion; they need to learn how to accept it and power through it.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_%28race%29
â- Training
For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many coaches believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Usually recreational runners try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles (32.2 km) in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles (64.4 km) a week in total, when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a longer distance, and more miles or kilometres during the week. Greater weekly training mileages can offer greater results in terms of distance and endurance, but also carries a greater risk of training injury. Most male elite marathon runners will have weekly mileages of over 100 miles (160.9 km).
Many training programs last a minimum of five or six months, with a gradual increase (every two weeks) in the distance run and a little decrease (1 week) for recovery. For beginners looking to finish a marathon, rather than compete, a minimum of 4 months, running 4 days a week is recommended (Whitsett et al. 1998). Many trainers, including Dr. Daniels, recommend a weekly increase in mileage of no more than 10%. It is also often advised to maintain a consistent running program for six months or so before beginning a marathon training program to allow the body to adapt to the new stresses.
During marathon training, adequate recovery time is important. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended to take a break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in a lower endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.â

OK, so 80% of the people i know believe in the end of the world being 2012. Why, what are some sighns? and if it does, how will it end?

Answer
What you need is our handy 15-part translation guide for interpreting what the crackpots say about 2012. Print it out and keep it handy when visiting woo-woo websites or watching the History Channel.

1) Statement: "Scientists say..."
Translation: "No scientists say. We've made it up, which is why we don't specify which scientists."

2) St: "NASA has confirmed..."
Tr: "NASA has not confirmed..." See 1) above.

3) St: "Planet X/Nibiru is only visible from the South Pole."
Tr: "We assume you're too stupid to realise that anything visible from the South Pole is also visible from Australia, South America, Southern Africa..."

4) St: "Planet X/Nibiru was discovered by the IRAS satellite in 1983."
Tr: "The object seen by IRAS was eventually confirmed to be a distant galaxy, but we've ignored all later reports because they disprove our claim."

5) St: "There will be a rare alignment between the Sun and the galaxy."
Tr: "There will be no alignment between the Sun and the galaxy which doesn't take place every single year."

6) St: "There is a blank area on Google Sky which hides Planet X/Nibiru."
Tr: "If you look at this area of the sky with your own eyes, you will see no sign of this object, but we don't like to mention that."

7) St: "Many ancient predictions point to this date."
Tr: " No ancient predictions point to this date. They've all been made up in the last few years."

8) St: "The Earth's poles will reverse in 2012."
Tr: "We don't really understand the difference between rotational poles and magnetic poles. If we'd studied geophysics we'd realise that a magnetic pole shift takes thousands of years and a rotational pole shift is a physical impossibility."

9) St: "The Earth will be destroyed by a solar flare."
Tr: "We haven't studied solar physics either. If we had, we'd understand that solar flares are no threat to life on Earth."

10) St: "The planets will align."
Tr: "We hope no-one will try running some software which simulates the positions of the planets because they'll find out we're lying again."

11) St: "Join our forum and share information about 2012. Anyone posting debunking messages will be banned."
Tr: "We don't want anyone spoiling our world of delusion and fantasy with real scientific facts."

12) St: "The surface of the Sun will be disrupted by a 'barycentric sleeve'."
Tr: "We'd like to blind you with science, but we don't know anything about it so we'll just invent some meaningless claptrap in the hope you'll fall for it."

13) St: "No-one knows what will happen in 2012."
Tr: "We do know what will happen in 2012 - absolutely nothing."

14) St: "Earthquakes, tsunamis, fire, flood, millions will die...."
Tr: "We like to appear knowledgeable and important and we don't particularly care if we terrify kids and cause people to commit suicide."

15) St: Support our advertisers and buy our books/videos/survival kits.."
Tr: "We know our predictions are garbage, but we'd like to rake in as much of your cash as we can in order to fund our comfortable retirement in 2013."

does rei otohata like ran kotobuki in super gals?

me

if yes, did he tell her? and what episode?

Answer
On Valentine's day after Aya gave Rei the chocolate, she starts to suspect that Rei likes Ran because Ran tried to give Rei some chocolate too, but he doesn't take it due to he think it's an act of obligation. Aya asks him if the likes Ran, and he answers yes. It's in season 2, episode 45. Watch it here. http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1147976h8bbKhYA?rank=0&jsonParams=%7B%22numResults%22%3A20%2C%22rlmin%22%3A0%2C%22query%22%3A%22super+gals+episode+45%22%2C%22rlmax%22%3Anull%2C%22veohOnly%22%3Atrue%2C%22order%22%3A%22default%22%2C%22range%22%3A%22a%22%2C%22sId%22%3A%2266271052272557287%22%7D&searchId=66271052272557287&rank=1

I actually like Rei and Aya better because Ran wants a guy who would let her be the boss, and that's not Rei. I think the reason for Rei telling Aya that he liked Ran was because he was getting tired of Aya worrying about their relationship over the littlest things. Rei does like Aya, but she doesn't have enough faith in him to trust him. She actually made him say that he liked Ran.

i've looked on nike's website but all the watches they have seem like they are either too big or very boring looking. i'm looking for anyone who has such a watch and would recommend it to me. thank you!

Runners watch for high school kid?

greenfrogt

My niece is in high school and she runs track and cross country. Her birthday is coming up and she's talked about getting the Nike + Sports Watch GPS, but I think that's an over kill. I'm looking for a runner's watch that can tell her mileage and such, but does not have a GPS, because I don't think that's necessary. Can you help me out?

Answer
Well, most watches that will track your mileage have a GPS in them because that is the way that the watch track his far you have run.

However, Nike has a watch that has a foot sensor that you put in your shoe that tracks the number of steps you take. If you calibrate the step distance correctly, you can get an accurate distance that you have run. These watches are also significantly cheaper then the GPS watches out there.

Speed and Distance watch for runners?

Punaboy_10

I want a watch that accurately records my distance ran and my pace each mile. Thats it! I dont need a calorie counter or heart rate monitor. I dont want to spend a rediculous amount so $50-$70 would be nice. Are there any watches with gps within this price range? Im tired of trying to track my distance by driving around in my car Please help.

Answer
well, i think you are looking for something like NIKE TRIAX or TIMEX MENâS 1440 SPORT DIGITAL WATCH...

I can suggest others but i guess you are also concerned with how these watches look.

i got those price from http://www.runningwatchreviews.com/ .. i think they are just around $15

there are plenty of other reviews there, list of features, prices and other stuff i guess you need to see them.

By the way, runners are so inl ove with garmin, i saw one from http://www.garminforerunnerblog.com/ but yah, that's pricey..

Hope that helps
