running disadvantage...?

#1 runna

is it a disadvantage to be short? Leo Manzano is short and he is great, but sometimes seems to fall to taller runners. many professionals are about six feet. manzano is only 5'5". are taller runners better?

Answer
No, height really has nothing to do with it. It might seem that way because tall runners cover more ground with each stride, and thus look like they're running more effortlessly, but a shorter stride takes less energy. It balances out...just watch a big dog trying to catch a squirrel or rabbit.

How hard is it to wind a pocket watch?

Katy

I'm thinking of getting my boyfriend a pocket watch for Valentine's Day. It would be a new one, and I can't decide if I should get one that he has to wind every day or not. I think it would be kind of cool and authentic in a way, if it's not that difficult. I'm not a watch connoisseur, so I don't know much about this at all. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Answer
It's a habit thing.

I wear a wind-up pocket watch every day. Winding it is part of my normal routine every morning. It takes about a minute to do. Most watches will run about 35 hours on a full wind(although one of mine, an old "safety barrel" Waltham will run about 50), so it will keep running even if you forget and wind later in the day. It is good, though, to wind at about the same time every day to allow for the best time keeping.

Someone else mentioned overwinding. This is NOT an issue.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OVERWINDING.

A watch should be wound until the crown is tight, and won't turn any more with a reasonable amount of force. Unless you use pliers to force the crown, you can't overwind a watch. A watch which is wound up and not running(commonly called "overwound" by those uninformed) has other problems. It could be dirty and in need of a cleaning, or there could be something more serious like a broken pivot on the balance staff or a broken roller jewel. Any of these requires a visit to a watchmaker, but are most certainly not caused by winding too tight.

At one time, dropping a mechanical watch, or any other mechanical impact, was a significant concern as it almost always resulted in a broken balance staff. All modern mechanical watches use shock protection on the balance, which greatly reduces the chance of a broken balance staff. It can still happen, though, especially with a hard enough knock.

Girls... what is the best watch that's cute and yet is best for runners?

ciao

Anyone know of a good brand of sport watches. I want one that will show me how far I've ran.

Answer
the only way to know how far you've run is to get one with a GPS on it. I have the Timex Speed+Distance system. You can get one on Amazon for under $100. The watch you can wear around every day, but to know your distance you have to wear a GPS on your arm also - its about the size of an iPod.

What training/GPS watch to buy?

Leonard Mc

Hello,
as i have mentioned before i am kind of a beginner runner. Im doing quite well, already have placed running in my every day schedule . Ive read about all these training /GPS running watches on the market and i think i should buy one. I would love to track my training and i also saw that some have set programmes but im so confused on picking the right one for me. Please help!
Thanks!

Answer
Ahh, the watch search..
Been there, done that, love to share.

First off, it totally depends on what stats you are looking for and how much money you willing to spend.
There are watches that track distance, calories, pace, time and heart rate if you get a heart rate monitor (i would advise that, specially as a smoker).

There are watches that track all the above while cycling or swimming too. In fact there are even watches that have even a barometric altimeter, compass and a hunt/fish calendar..Ok yeah i know, not for running, but still its amazing.
As Apollenaire stated above me, i swear by garmin too.

If you want to expand your training to cycling and swimming, i strongly recommend the Garmin Forerunner 310xt. Its as far as i know the only watch out there that can deliver on all 3 modes and is 100% waterproof. http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/whrm-review-the-ultimate-tool-or-just-another-stop-watch/
If you want to just have a watch to track your running and all that in a really really really simple way, id get the Forerunner 110. Its made just for running and is as easy to use as a stop watch.(plus it looks too cool and comes in many colors) http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/garmin-forerunner-110-gps-sport-watch-with-heart-rate-monitor-review-think-pink/

Note: if you do get a heart rate monitor and you dont like the strap , good thing about garmin is that you can buy a polar strap and it will work fine with the garmin transmitor, but the polar transmitor doesnt work with a garmin watch.

Take care and keep running!!

Any suggestions for Running Watches???!?

Aaron

i want a watch with a pacer sort of like the garmin watch, any suggestions?

Answer
There are several options for a pacer-though garmin has been a front runner.

These include:

The NEW BALACE N8 TRAINER ($150) delivers basic heart-rate, speed, and distance tracking at a decent price. Unlike the other watches here, the N8 comes with both a heart-rate strap (although not a particularly comfortable one) and a quarter-sized footpod. You can set the display several ways to prominently show pace and heart rate, and you can cycle through other nice-to-know metrics, like cadence and step count, across the bottom. However, we did find the scrolling display quite hard to read on the go and it provides the least detail among the heart-rate trainers we tested. nbwebexpress.com

For runners interested in studying as much workout information as possible, the GARMIN FR60 ($99) is a wrist-top professor. The watch measures heart rate and calories via the included chest strap and, if you add the optional footpod ($99), it tracks speed, cadence, and distance. It also sucks up workout stats from ANT+ enabled cardio machines at the gym and wirelessly uploads all the numbers to Garmin's Web site, where you can slice and dice them into eye-pleasing charts. We especially liked how the watch's virtual partner showed how far behind (or ahead) you were of the target pace.

Getting off the couch and up to speed can be the most difficult thing for a new runner, but the NIKE+ SPORTBAND ($59) holds your hand along the way. During runs, the watch pulls signals from the included footpod, displaying speed, distance, and elapsed time. When the run is done, you can upload this info to the Nike+ Web site, where you can learn more about your training trends by plotting charts for speed, distance, and estimated calorie counts. Take note, however, that this watch is as basic as it gets. You won't get any heart-rate measurements, nor will it even count laps. nikerunning.com

For more watch reviews check out our shoe and gear section at Runnersworld.

I need a good running watch, something reliable, shows heartbeat, distance and time. Any recommendations?

The reason being is i'm newly training for a half-marathon. I have done a few 5k's and a 10k and those were 'leisurely' to me (i did little to no pre-training), this new task however i am going at like someone who actually cares about her body and doesn't want to do any damage.
*Any tips, tricks or advice?
*Has anyone tried compression socks?

Answer
I swear by my Garmin 305. You can get one on Amazon for about $125. It will give you average and high heartbeat and pace, distance in English and metric, time and even a virtual partner for a run where you can pre-set a distance or pace or time and you can see if you are ahead or behind reaching your goal. You can even program an interval workout.

Haven't tried compression socks though I hear good things and have seen elite athletes use them in races.

The advice I would give is build up your weekly mileage no more than 10% a week (so as not to damage your body) and build up your long run until you are running the same amount of time you expect to run in your half marathon. Run 4-6 times a week, less than 4 and you won't progress, more than 6 and you risk damaging your body (overtraining).
Good luck!

How to become a pro runner (female)?

Ok so I enjoy running, but I would like to try out for track next school year and it is the second week of my summer, soo i think i have some time. I think i have long legs but i dont think i would make the track team as i am now. I would like to run long distance and i am only going to 8th grade.so if there was an exercise rountine and/ or workkout plan i could use to help me improve my running speed and my physical fitness (i wish to not get tired as easily) and if you could tell me when i should start to see some results...it helps me to see a finish line or when i have reached a goal. thank you so much, I really appreciate your help (in adv.) you have no idea how much i want to make the track team.
P.S. I have access to a public 7 mile (one way) trail,, //some// workout equipment....and i have a large yard (a couple acres) but there are some hills.... and a small mountain w/ trail,
Dont put a stupid short answer please!

Answer
Compete and win races. Run a lot. There are great tips on the Runner's World web site - it can help you plan a training schedule. There is a TON of free info there. It is also a great magazine. You might be able to get it at your library.

If your junior high doesn't have a team, then go and talk to the high school coach. I'm sure he or she'd LOVE to talk to you. You could even probably train with them.

And PS. Once you start running a lot, get your parents to take you to a good running store and get measured properly for running shoes. They should check your arch and if it is a good store they will put you on a treadmill and watch you run. The right running shoes are very important.

I think a good workout is speed work once week, long and slow run once a week, and maybe hills once a week. The rest of the days should just be easy runs. Trail runs are fun. Be sure and take one day a week off and don't increase your mileage more than 10% per week. The rest of the info you can get from the web site and your future coach. Just get out and run. Even if you have to walk every other minute, so what, do it and eventually you will get better. I'm a 40 year old guy who went from barely being able to able to run 2 miles to running 15 miles in one year.

The best advice that I can give is just to enjoy running. I made the mistake of running because I thought I had to do it. Then I stopped. It took me 20 years to remember that it is fun.

When will you see results? That really depends. If you don't run a lot now, then you will see results fast. Either way, keep a running log so you can measure your progress. That web site also has a free running log. Drop me aline and let me know how it goes!

With runners on first and second, how can a triple play occur in baseball without the ball touching a fielder?

Aaron

This has occured twice in the history of MLB. Please tell me how this can occur and with whom it has occured to. CATCHERS ARE FIELDERS

Answer
i found this online, it's long:

First, there would have to be runners at first and second and no outs.

- The batter hits a fair fly ball that can be fielded by one of the infielders. He would then be out by the infield fly rule, even if no one touches the ball. One Out.

- The runner at first passes the runner at second. The runner at first is automatically out:

7.08
Any runner is out when... (h) He passes a preceding runner before such runner is out;

I remember a ball that Tim McCarver hit in his final year that invoked this rule (it may have been spring training). The bases were loaded and McCarver hit a ball over, I believe, the right field wall. As McCarver ran, he watched the flight of the ball and didn't notice that he had passed the runner at first. He was credited with a single and was declared out. All three runners scored, however. McCarver laughed his way to the bench as I remember.

Two Outs.

- The runner at second is struck by the batted ball as it lands:

7.08
Any runner is out when...(f) He is touched by a fair ball in fair territory before the ball has touched or passed an infielder. The ball is dead and no runner may score, nor runners advance, except runners forced to advance. EXCEPTION: If a runner is touching his base when touched by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out; If two runners are touched by the same fair ball, only the first one is out because the ball is instantly dead. If runner is touched by an Infield Fly when he is not touching his base, both runner and batter are out.

Three Outs and no fielder touched the ball

It is important that those steps occur in the above order in the way described.

If the runner at first passes the runner at second after he has been struck by the ball, then the runner at second would already be out and could not affect the runner at first. Besides the ball would be dead, and he could not advance anyway.

If the runner at second keeps his foot on the bag when he is hit by the ball, he is not out. If the ball hits both runners, only the first is out and the ball is dead. If the ball is past, say, a drawn-in infielder, then the runner at second is not out.

Of course, this is an extremely unlikely set of events, which may explain why it (most probably) has never occurred. I mean, why would the runner at first run past the bag at second, in order to pass the lead runner, on a ball that is clearly not leaving the infield? Perhaps, he could have lost sight of the ball or believed that it was traveling further that it in actuality did or thought there were two outs already. In that case, it is imperative for the trailing runner to check out the third base coach and the lead runner to determine what to do, who would help prevent such miscues.

The lead runner would probably stay on the bag, eliminating rule 7.08 (f). Besides, where are the fielders? If a middle infielder-given that the lead runner is hit by the ball-cannot make a play, he would probably be in front of the ball and not behind it.

Let's assume that the play did occur. How would it be scored? I believe it would be listed as an unassisted triple play attributed to the player closest to the ball when it landed. In Tuesday's botched infield fly play, Fernando Tatis dove too late to catch the ball. It was scored a fly out to third, even though the ball was closer to home than third.

Also, I would think there are any number of nutty immaculate triple plays that you could come up with if you wanted to be creative. Why there's rule 7.09(g):

7.09
It is interference by a batter or a runner when...(g) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner.

Say the bases are loaded and none are out in a tie ballgame in the top of the ninth. The infield is drawn in. The coaches flash that the suicide squeeze is on, but the batter does not see the sign and is swinging away. The runner at second is overzealous and passes the runner at third, who realizes that the batter is swinging away. The batter hits a sharp one hopper to the second baseman, which further freezes the runner at third allowing the runner at second to pass him and be declared out. The runner at first realizes that it is a double play ball and interferes with the drawn-in second baseman before he fields the ball to avoid the double play. Both the runner at first and the batter are out for interference and the ball is dead before the defense touches it. Three outs and no one has touched the ball.

These scenarios are possible but highly improbable since they involve a number of dubious choices by a number of players. They are fun to think about though. And after seeing the Montreal play the other day, I'm starting to believe anything is possible.

Starting runner tips?

BIG_Woody1

So I am starting to try to lose weight and I was just gonna run around the trail in my neighborhood, can you give me any tips on running, how long I should run, how far, ect?

Answer
Before I give you tips:
Running does loose weight, but it builds your legs, like calves and thighs. Your legs might appear bigger after running for a while, and it's just your muscles. Also when you build muscle you must keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat.

Okay onto the tips:
â¢start out with what you feel comftorable doing, at a good pace. Maybe try a mile your first day. For you maybe an 11:00 minute mile would be about right but it all depends on what shape you are in.

â¢a healthier diet is a key to good running. If you are serious about you should stop drinking pop and eating junk foods. Eat bananas the day you workout, for energy, and pasta the night before you workout. These have carbs which equal energy.

â¢keep hydrated! Water is so important for a runner! You should drink about 8 cups a day.

â¢stretch before and after running. Make up your own stretch routine or find one online that seems to suite you. If you don't stretch you will be very sore. This website below is a good stretching routine to follow;

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/126.shtml

â¢run in the right shoes, make sure yours are fit for running and don't hurt your feet.

â¢run when it's cooler outside, like in the morning. Heat is hard to run in and you should only purposely run in it for training.

â¢when you feel comftorable running just 1-2 miles a day, start 3-4. Remember that it's not about how fast you go, but about how far you go.

â¢record your time and distance in a notebook, like a running diary. This will help to see if your times are getting better, or staying the same.

â¢time yourself often, wear a watch when you run. Or you can find other methods of timing but that might be easier.

â¢when you feel like you're going to stop, start skipping. It make look and sound dumb but it really makes you feel like you are doing less work. Start running again when you feel like it.

â¢if you are ever convinced that you need to stop, then make sure you walk, and keep moving! Stoping completely is not good!

â¢know that you mind tells you differently than your body can do. After running for a while you will realize that you can do much more than you ever thought you could.

â¢try to run everyday, don't give up.

â¢if you decide that you want to go into marathons or competitive running, do research on them.

â¢when in competitive running, keep your arms down low, when you are tired they will come up and that is a sign that you are tired. Others will take advantage of that.

â¢if you want company, don't try to run with friends on a trail, but go to a gym and run with them on treadmills. Everyone has a different pace.

Good luck! If you have anymore questions about it you can email me at:

Answer
Most people think that baseball was invented by the American Abner Doubleday during the 19th century. But baseball is actually much older than that â and it came from England, not America!

In past centuries, a game called rounders was played in England, with rules something like those of baseball. Some English people even called this game "base ball."

In 1840, American players changed the rules for this game so that a runner could be put out by tagging him with the ball. Before that, a fielder put out a runner by hitting him with a thrown ball! After the rule change, balls could be made harder, and since a hard ball travels farther when thrown or hit, the playing field became much larger.

After the 1840 change, baseball began to grow in America, and in 1869, the first professional team appeared.

Then why is Abner Doubleday credited with inventing baseball? Early this century, a commission of baseball experts was set up to find out where and when baseball was invented.

The commission said that in 1839, a young man named Abner Doubleday invented the game and set up the first baseball diamond in Cooperstown, New York. But it was later discovered that the commission had named Doubleday because they wanted to prove that our "national pastime" was truly an American sport.

We now know that it really grew out of an older game that was popular years ago in England.

So who is telling the truth in the story about the African runner?

Rick C

Doctors say that Caster Semenya has both male and female sex organs, making "her" a hermaphrodite. Those close to the runner say they are wrong.

What does everyone think?

Answer
I have been watching and answering on the story, but have not gone to the web in two days, I did not know doctors had examined her/him.

If she/he has male organs, then it is unfair for her/him to compete with women.

Women's sports are for women only.

Is Forerunner 205 - Garmin GPS a good watch???

tatortottw

Hey!
I'm thinking to get this watch for my dad's birthday. The description sounds like the watch he wants. But is their anything that you don't like about it. Where's a good place to get it at, the cheapest place. Is it going to be around 100.00 or more.

Thanks

Answer
I have used the Forerunner 205 and 305 and the only difference is that the 305 is compatible with (and sometimes depending on where you purchase it, it comes with) a hear rate monitor. So if that sounds like something your dad might be interested in than I would definitely go for the 305.

It is basically the god-watch of any passionate runner/athlete (you can use it for running and biking). The only "annoyance" I have with it is that it is kind of big on the wrist, it is light but bulky. It is slightly smaller than the circumference of a water bottle.

I recently discovered that I can customize the screens (three available screens to customize) to display up to four panels of information (this is on my 305: Cadence, Cadence-Average, Cadence-Per Lap, Calories, Date, Distance, Distance-Current Lap, Distance-Last Lap, Distance-Paused, Elevation, GPS Accuracy, Grade, Heading, Heart Rate, Heart Rate-Average, Heart Rate-Lap, Heart Rate Zone, Laps, Pace, Pace-Average, Pace-Best, Pace-Lap, Pace-Last Lap, Pace Zone, Time of Sunrise, Time of Sunset, Time, Time-Average Lap, Time-Lap, Time-Last Lap, Time-Paused Time of Day) which is a really nice feature I like.

So pretty much, except the size, I absolutely love this watch!

I got my 305 (I have only tried the 205, not actually owned it) at Costco for $180 ($200 retail + $20 coupon), and since at the time the MSRP was $399, I thought that was a great deal. Since now the MSRP for the 205 is $199, you can probably get it for under $100 if you wait patiently. I would definitely look at Costco, try eBay or Amazon. When I was shopping for my 305 on eBay I saw many around the $200 range. Right now on eBay there are 205's ranging from $50 to $150, and that's about as high as they go.

So good luck with this purchase, I hope you get a great deal on your 205 like I did on my 305, I am absolutely positive your dad will LOVE this watch!

do you think this computer will run upcoming games smoothly?

I do long road runs quite a bit and am looking into buying a gps watch. I used to have a polar heart rate monitor (ft4) but misplaced it. It was great for telling me the calories burned but I really need one that tells me distance and pace, too.

I was looking online last night and there are just SO many options. Polars versus Garmins versus Nike versus TomTom....

The features I want are:
-gps to tell me my distance/pace
-how many calories I burn (and visible during workout, not just after)
-decent battery since I run 20-40 miles per week
-weather proof since I run in rain/snow/extreme heat...

I do not need training plans, feedback, or anything like that...I just want it to be accurate and durable. Do you have any suggestions? Or any NOT to get? Even if I can eliminate some, that would be great! I loved my polar ft4, it just didn't have the gps features.

Answer
the Nike+ Sport Watch ( http://store.nike.com/nl/en_gb/pd/sportwatch-gps/pid-795756/pgid-560061 ) is simply great :)
i use mine mostly while biking (thus seriously interested in the newer TomTom one with multi sport support) but for running / biking the older Nike+ (with GPS technology from TomTom, including its quickfix data (whenever connected to the Computer (with Nike+ Connect installed) the GPS satellite positions for the next couple days are stored in the Watch's memory and when you want to start running the device finds the satellites quicker (i sometimes forget to do it again after not using the watch a few days & then the finding of satellites takes notably longer - VERY handy feature, certainly in freezing winter ;D))

otherwise the watch has all you are looking for including display of all the data (time, distance, pace and cal) at one glance (see 3rd pic).
it easily lasts several hours (not sure how quickly you get to 40 miles, but i can use it two days in a row without needing to recharge (the site advertises 8 hrs run per load, might be right - any USB plug (e.g. http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=-NTbO2GqT6YM4M&tbnid=2jaDYSeMCiJ1-M:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdoocoor.en.made-in-china.com%2Fproduct%2FsqzxoMbAbXrf%2FChina-USB-Travel-Charger-CW-CH7001-.html&ei=BXrAUouiJsTI0QXJxoHADw&psig=AFQjCNFPW1e-VhX_xf4NXCO-OuKyogHuLA&ust=1388432246883281 or of course at your computer) recharges it in about 2 hrs (from empty))

the TomTom watch is an evolution of the Nike+ / TomTom model with some added feature (for several sports like swimming, biking and so beside running) but for run / bike, the Nike+ is still perfectly fine
it is tight (50 m under water...)

& it connects (bluetooth?) to a heartbeat sensor & stores that as well - not sure it displays it while running as well however - but the Nike+ site is very handy for checking on your performances and progress :(or regress):

it also connects to a Nike sensor that you can put into your (Nike) shoes (one of them, obviously) to use it on a treadmill)

Which Satellite (GPS) Running Watch?

Cory J

I'm looking for a good GPS running watch. These are the kind that tell you exactly how far you've gone, how fast, etc. using the GPS satellites.

I've seen a couple that are pretty damn big, I'm sort of a small guy. I have skinny wrists and only weight 125 lbs, so I really don't want to lug a big thing around? If found another one that was a small watch, but you had to strap another thing on your arm to receive the signal?

...I don't want to mess with a foot pod and I don't need a heart rate monitor with it. So, which one should I get?
Are 305 and 205 the same size?

Answer
I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 which has the heart rate monitor. They make the 205 which does not have heart rate. I admit the unit is a bit clunky looking but I honestly never notice it while running. I love mine, it has helped to substantially reduced my PR in the full and 1/2 marathon.

Cheapest place I have found it for sale is www.boatersland.com which is actually a boating supply store (Garmin also makes GPS for boaters). I would recommend the unit with heart rate. That will help to to truly maximize your training.

Good luck

Timex GPS running watches?

I need to buy a GPS running watch, it has to be timex, so don't recommend a different brand. I run cross country, so I need a watch that will tell me distance, pace, and time. (I don't really care about heart rate) I was wondering if anyone can recommend a watch OTHER THAN THE GLOBAL TRAINER. Also, do you have to use a clip on thing for the distance to work? Will it work if I don't wear the heart rate monitor?

Thanks
best answer will be chosen

Answer
Unfortunately Global Trainer GPS is the only GPS running watch that Timex offers. However Timex offer another running watch - Timex Bodylink System that track heart rate, speed & distance with external contraption (a sensor) that works together with the watch. You can look that up, the model number is TX589-T5C391.

HRM strap is usually worn at a different location so the answer is Yes, it work even without wearing the HRM.

hope it helps.

Timex GPS running watch?

Bob

I would like to buy a GPS watch for monitoring my pace and distance that I run. It seems that the Garmin Forerunner is popular. However, those models all seem pretty big and bulky. I found several Timex Ironmen Speed + Distance watches that seem to have the same functionality but more compact size (Timex models T5E701, T5B501 and T5E691, for example). Does anyone have these watches? Can you vouch for their reliability/functionality? Thanks!

Answer
This watch is really small and not bulky like the Forerunner:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EOMVZ4/ref=nosim/gpsmiclikacom-20?dev-t=D2WMCOIPS9D14E

It includes a GPS, altimeter, barometer and a compass.

How to watch Olympics online (Computer problem)?

What_if_I_

So I tried to download "NBC Direct" from NBC.com; the install program says that I don't have enough RAM (at least 500 mb). But I have 512 installed on a 2 ghz machine, and I regularly use my laptop for HD video viewing, even editing, so I'm sure I could run the program. Most programs let you try to install anyway, even if you supposedly don't meet the minimum requirements; is there a way of "tricking" this program to let me install?

How do you hook up a projector to watch sports?

truthlovee

I am trying to set up a projector in my backyard to watch the football game on Sunday. I want to know how should I do it. Can I hook up my Direct TV to a laptop and then hook the laptop to the projector using an S cord connection?? Please advise what would be the easiest way to make this happen. Oh, the game is on a local channel.
Thanks...

Answer
It's simple!

Just run a cable from the output of your DTV box to the input of your projector. Without knowing what connections you have on both it's hard to say exactly, but if your pj has S Video input then just run the S video directly from the DTV box to the PJ.

One, note however. Although using S video is ok you'll get a much better picture using component (Red/Green/Blue). You can use a VGA to component adapter like this one

advice on a workout watch?

nadnad1992

I'm thinking of getting one of those calorie, hr, distance tracking watches to go on jogs with around the town. Could yall offer some advice on what products have been good/bad? I know some have a chect strap that measures hr, im not too excited about that, i rather have all the sensors on my wrist and pay a little extra

Thanks!

Answer
There is no such thing as a HR sensor on your wrist. That's not an accurate way to measure HR. It's far too far away from your heart.
My advice is download the FREE iMapMyRun app from iTunes. I spent almost $200 on a GPA Garmin watch and I'm really disappointed in it. The watch takes FOREVER to get GPS signal, it loses it really easy in tree cover and ALL my runs are in tree cover. It doesn't tell you when it loses signal. The CD that came in the box with it's software doesn't have any software on it. Plus I can't find where I can download the software for my Mac.

My FREE iPhone app is a million times better at tracking distances, elevation, gets GPS signal in literally less than 5 seconds, never loses signal even on my trail runs. I'm really sorry I ever bought a watch. Apps on smartphones are far more advanced and the GPS technology on phones is far better. FAR FAR BETTER!

Should I buy new Nike product for my exercises?

Oblivian

I really excersise a lot. Mostley cardio in home and running out on the track. I want to buy somthing that will track my movment. I have an Android phone, not an iPhone. I want to to get somthing that will monitor my heart rate, how many miles I run, and also tell time if it can. I'm wondering if I should buy one thing that does it all (but I dont which one does that), or 2 seprate things that do that. I have been thinking about buy the fuelband because the Nike+ android app already tracks my run, but I heard that there not that great. Please help.

Answer
I would definitely suggest buying the Nike+ Sportwatch GPS. It doesn't just tell time. It keeps you motivated and on track with unique features like automatic run-reminders. Then during the run it keeps track of your location, pace, distance, laps, and calories burned, and it doesn't need a chip in your shoe or an app on your phone. With the Polar Wearlink+, it also tracks your heart rate. It also stores all your run history and keeps tabs on your personal records, giving you encouragement messages along the way. And finally after your run you can get online to set goals, track your progress, view your splits, and connect with other runners. You can also check out your mapped runs, and see how elevation affects your pace and find the best places to run and compete on a Nike+ Top Route. The watch is about $170 but it's well worth the cost, I highly suggest it.

Need help finding a good running watch?

Annie S

I want a watch that shows mileage and has a stopwatch, I wouldn't use any other features.
I know that many GPS watches show mileage but they're typically very expensive, and include many features that I don't want.
Could you please suggest a watch that is under $50 that shows mileage and has a stopwatch?

Thanks in advance!:)

Answer
Hi.I tried looking around. The best I could come up with is the Nike Sportsband. It is only $59 from Sports Authority. You can order it online. Click the link in my sources to see. Here is the description:

Track your progress with the easy-to-use Nike+® Sportband. The memory captures and stores 30 hours of running data and features an enhanced-quality display, improved water resistance and a pre-curved polyurethane band. Wear it around your wrist like a watch to monitor distance, pace, time and calories burned.

Can you recommend a running watch for me that covers these features?

Nathaniel

I am a high school runner and am interested in a running watch for several reasons. I used the nike+ kit before but I want something more accurate and also, I don't wear nike shoes anymore and want to try a real watch.

The main features I want from the watch are:

-Able to tell me my pace at which I'm running very accurately
-Able to let me record laps
-Able to tell me the distance I've gone
-Backlight

And preferably:
-Water resistant or at least won't get ruined in a little rain
- Average pace of the whole run after I'm finished

I am really looking for the cheapest watch possible that covers those needs. I don't know if I'm asking for basic features or some complex ones, I would assume most average running watches cover those features?

Also, for the pace and distance, how will the watch be accurate? I know with nike+, the battery that goes in the shoe sends information of the running to the sensor in the iPod. So how do running watches record accurate pace and distance?

Please help me find the best watch!!?

Answer
I have been doing research on that very thing, and I've found that the most reliable watches are the Garmin Forerunner watches. The 305 and 405 are the most up-to-date, but I'm still a little fuzzy on their pace and mileage tracking capabilities. The information I've found doesn't tell verbatim "Keeps track of your pace and miles run." I hope more people contribute answers; I know running stores will have great information, but the internet has much cheaper prices.
