If dogs are colorblind, how can a guide dog tell the difference between a red light and a green light?

Do guide dogs just pay attention to traffic?
Where I live there are no crossing "beeps" on the walk ways.
I know that dogs can see some colors.

Answer
Dogs don't look at the lights. The client is taught to read the traffic flow. If you watch the traffic you will notice there is a sequence of traffic flow direction. The client is taught to listen for this sequence and to cross accordingly.

The guide dog and the client are a team that work together. If a car was to 'run a red light' the dog would respond by either stopping the client from crossing or stopping the client 'part way' to prevent a collision - not, as many stray dogs would do....making a bolt for it!!! Guide dogs generally only provide a 'safety margin' for traffic (better than a longcane as dogs do have self preservation). Often at their peak when they first finish training this training is broken down over time by day to day activities like crossing in front of cars with their motors running...for example pedestrian crossings etc. Clients are taught how to reinforce traffic training and must do this regularly to keep them working well. Even at their best a guide dog is only thought to have the traffic negotiating ability of a 3-5year old as they are not really able to accurately calculate the speed, distance and time of oncoming traffic.

What signs should i watch out for to make sure my beardie isnt dying and i cant tell?

My beardie is actin differently and I'm just worried
He would be any cricket I put in the cage and all he does is look at them. He is in the basking area most of the time and he has lighter skin than usual. He always is running around and I'm worried so if theirs any ideas please write it please and thank you.

Answer
I would highly recommned that you double check your husbandry; husbandry that is lacking is a huge cause of reptile illness in captivity. Here's a couple of good guides for you to look through:

http://herp-info.webs.com/beardeddragon.htm

http://www.beardeddragon.org/articles/caresheet/

Things to check for would be:

1) Do you have a UVB light and a basking temp (95 F for an adult, 110 F for a baby) available for 10 - 12 hours a day?

2) If you have a UVB bulb, what is the make and model and how old is it? (If you have a coiled/compact UVB bulb I highly recommned that you switch it out for a long tube UVB bulb ; coiled/compacts are known to cause severe eye damage and/or blindness in reptiles, not to mention they have trouble maintaining UVB output over time.) If you have a coiled/compact UVB bulb and it is older than 4 - 6 months, it needs to be replaced even if it is still producing visible light. If you have a long tube UVB bulb and it's over a year old, it needs to be replaced.

3) Do you use calcium supplementation twice a week? Captive reptiles are prone to calcium deficientcy.

4) Do you have loose substrate, like sand? Has the bearded been defacating regularly? If you answered yes to the first qustion and no to the second, I highly recommned that you remove the sand substrate and replace it with a solid substrate, like textured ceramic tile, slate rock, non-adhesive shelf liner, or repti-carpet. Beardeds are prone to a conditon called impaction of the gut, and it is most often caused by repeated ingestion of loose substrate.

Is it worth buying the Garmin 610 or will they come out with a better one soon?

Alex

I was thinking about buying the Garmin 610. It is very expensive though, so I was wondering if it is worth it or should I just wait. And how long do you thing it would be? Thanks!

Answer
Personally, as a runner, I don't understand the difference between the 301 and everything that has come after it (though I do understand the need for a company to market new products). It costs about 3 times what I paid for my 301 and for what, a touch screen instead of the buttons or to download a performance that I can compare with others online? No matter how many bells and whistles they add to it, after a GPS watch tells you how far you ran, how fast you ran it, how fast your heart beat doing it, if you are on pace doing a run and is able to download this information onto a computer, everything else is marketing.

Any runners know where I can find a good distance counting watch?

Q. I am an avid runner, I run approximately 23 miles a week. (about 4 1/2 a day) I am in the market for a wristwatch that can actually calculate the distance you've run per session in mile increments. Any ideas where I can find something like that? The only thing I can seem to find are heart rate monitors, which isn't what I'm looking for.

Answer
Your best investment, especially if you care about accuracy, is likely one of the GPS units.

The Garmin Forerunner 305 probably remains the best value out there. You might look at the 205 as well.

How can you get rid of fleas on a Mongolian gerbil?

I was watching my gerbil run around is cage. While I was watching him he started scratching his ears and head area. Then I saw him biting his side. I saw something black that looked like a flea on his head. He is totally black and has a white spot on his neck and that is where I saw it. So how am I supposed to get rid of them? Can they kill my gerbil or do they just make him itch like any other animal? I have never had this happen before.

Answer
Ivermectin from the exotic vet is what is typically prescribed for parasites. Most OTC products do not work, but you can get a couple of the ones for kittens. Revolution treats fleas, mites and lice. Advantage can be used for fleas and lice.

I will give you several links pertaining to parasites. The first 2 although for rats will also apply to any rodent. The third link although for mites discusses using an OTC made for kittens. The links are as follows:

http://gerbilforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthfaq&action=display&thread=11597&page=1

http://ratguide.com/meds/anti-infectives/advantage.php

http://ratguide.com/health/integumentary_skin/ectoparasites.php

You will need to thoroughly scrub the cage and all accessories after treatment. Toss all wood products as they can contain eggs. Ask an exotic vet for treatment times with the product you choose as you will need to repeat based on life cycle of the parasite. For instance, with mites, I was told to repeat the Revolution 2 weeks after and then again 1 month later. Repeat the cleaning process, too, of course. You will need to treat all animals in your home, though, for the fleas.

Fleas and any parasite can come from anywhere. It has nothing to do with how you clean a cage. Bedding often contains mites which is why it is recommended the bedding be baked or frozen prior to use. I am sorry your little one has fleas. It is a real pain for everyone.

Running and Cycling Intervals With Heart Rate?

I just got a heart rate monitor last week to help me out for my running and cycling training.

What do I do when I have to do intervals (eg. 3 mins at a faster pace then 3 mins at a slower pace).

Because the heart rate takes a while to get up to the higher bpm and then come back down, like a lag in time sort of thing.

Should I just do intervals based on percieved exertion of how hard I'm going?

Answer
That's because it takes a little while for your heart rate to rise and come back down before/after an interval, it always lags. Some watches you can set an HR zone(s). It will beep or it will calculate the time in the various "zone(s)". Just use the average HR over your 3-minutes at a certain pace. I never pay much attention to my HR monitor, you can pick up adjacent peoples signal, traffic lights interfere with it, you get weird blips. It's useful to see what your max is and how long it takes to recover, but over than that I never found much use for it.

I'm looking for something to that keeps track of my running speed and distance. Maybe a watch or foot pod. Something that keeps track on my distance and speed. I should be able to connect it to my PC via USB and maybe comes with software and lets me see progress or past date data. Looking to spend no more than $100. Perhaps maybe a GPS devices that records my data and lets me access it on the web. I need someone accurate as I am preparing for the Army Ranger!

Answer
Ok, ranger, If you already have an iPod nano, iPod touch, or an iPhone, the answer is easy. A nike + sensor. If you have a nano you also need the receiver. You don' t have to use nike shoes. You can buy a little pouch or do it your self. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbjB0qp1ioM
It's not that accurate - but no foot pods are. but it can be calibrated. I've gotten mine to as low as 2% error. but 5% is more like the average.
The only GPS watch that I know of that's under a hundred is the Timex Marathon. But look for a Garmin in Craig's list or eBay. the 305 is a little dated and it will be a little slow to find satellites but has every feature you'll ever need (including a HRM) and lots of accessories. the 405 is a newer and faster and you might be able to get a good deal on one.
I think Nike has the best web site. But Garmin's is very good. I don't know what kind timex has.
GPS will give you more accurate results for distance. Foot pods will give you a more accurate speed and they work indoors. Oh and nano's will play music, too.

Have you ever bought expensive gear and then find out later something cheaper works better?

Answer
In regards to Reels- No.

I've never purchased an expensive reel and said- "Dang! This Steez, (Lamson, Abel, Stradic), just doesn't "do it" for me like that Shimano FX series, (lol).

However, when it comes to rods, I've learned that even the MOST expensive rods will break- Murphys Law states- "The more you pay for a fishing rod, the more likely you will break it."

That's where warranties become very helpful. (But, I understand GF's views- a broken rod on tourney day can "jinx" you and put you in a bad mood- killing your momentum!)

I've got expensive rods, but here lately, I've been buying "cheaper" ones and wearing them out within a season. My cheapest set of rods comes in at $60 and they do a fine job without breaking the bank, (Fenwick "Iron Hawk" from Gander Mt- the Medium Heavy is very nice).

I have not purchased the Berkley Shock yet but I've dinked around with it at the store. In my opinion, they would def be "worthy" for a season of fishing.

I'm real hard on my rods. After catching over 1000 fish on a Flippin' Stick you begin to worry.....esp on T-day, (lol).

Wet Weather Gear??- A Goretex suit beats the pants off a "poncho"! (lol)

Lures & tackle?? The cheaper the better! Thank you Ebay! A "used" lure catches JUST as many fish as a new one does. You should see the prices on Fly's PT.......Even if they are "horse-shite" made fly's and only hold up to 1-2 fish, at those low prices you can afford to throw them away.

Hooks??- Always get Owner, Gamakatsu, Daiichi. If your using 'ole Eagle Claw your missin' strikes!

Electronics's- YES! When I was a young lad and Humminbird hit the scene with it's "3D" fish finder I was "mesmerized". Three DDD's! Holy Smokes! I saved up $650 and thought I'd be in "electronics's heaven".

Then "grey-scale" came out, ( Lowrance got rid of graph paper and did the "grey thing"). And then Garmin hit hard with their product's. Within 4-5 years my View looked perty "dim", (lol). I realized the 3D was a gimmick and didn't "really" give you any better view.

Word of advice guys/gals, (which I learned the hard way)- Unless you MAINLY angle in waters OVER 20 FT don't concern yourself with $1000 fishfinders! Yes! They are cool to watch and if your Offshore fishing or Reef fishing in saltwater they are a must. But if your a typical "lake" angler spend your money elsewhere. A low-mid level Finder is really all you need!

Push Poles- YES! I made a KILLER push-pole out of a fiberglass & aluminum "painter's roller pole" from Home Depot. If your EVER in need of a push pole and don't have $200-$300 for a "top of the line" PP, GO to Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Etc and look in the painter's section. They run about $60-$80, and work Well! Just bolt a piece of "V-shaped" , heavy-walled, PVC on the end and your SET! (Brandon, you know what I'm talking about I'll bet?)

Well, I guess I could go On and ON- Rambling! Needless to say, my abbreviated answer would be "YES- on occasion".

Would having a artificial Pacemaker put me out for becoming an avionics technician?

running watch pacer on ... Bulls @ Indiana Pacers, 1998 Playoffs, ECF Game 6: Pacers prevail
running watch pacer image

silancer11

I have heard that welding is involved and with an artificial Pacemaker, you cannot use welding equipment.
With current Pacemakers, microwaves, cell phones, etc. pose no danger to them. Thats only with the old style.

Answer
That's a question you are going to have to ask your pacemaker tech, or perhaps even call the Consumer Info line of the company that makes it.

Pacemakers are much better than they were, but you still have to use a little common sense. You can be in the same room as a running microwave oven (It used to be you had to leave the room first) but don't lean over the microwave watching your food cook. Keep about 3 feet (at least) between it and you.

Also, you should use your cell phone on the opposite side of your body. If your pacemaker is implanted in the left shoulder, for example, hold the cell phone to your right ear.

Magnets are a no-no. Those super strong rare earth magnets are a serious no-no. The doc can adjust your pacemaker by using a magnet, so getting close to a magnetic field could accidentally reprogram your pacer.

I'm assuming that you are not an Avionics Tech yet, but want to get into the field. If so, you need to schedule a meeting with someone who teaches Avionics Repair, and ask his opinion. If he isn't sure, ask him how much work around magnets, electromagnets, and welding could be involved. And then call the pacemaker company and talk to them about it. If they ask you any questions, tell them what the teacher said, or offer to put them in touch with the instructor.

Good luck, and hopefully you will get the answer you desire!

How come nobody said anything of what couldve happened to horry?

Q. when amare was sprinting towards the melee, robert horry had his back to the suns bench. how come nobody thinks this coulve been worse? amare was held back and also realized oh crap i need to get off the court watch the tape again not as a fan as a judge. the suspensions were justified -aparently nobody remembers the pistons vs pacers.,heat vs bulls etc.
i love the spurs but bowen does go far sometimes. but steve nash also flops alot. watch the fouls he gotten called for him. he also runs into the body of players. if this had been tony parker suns wouldnt be crying would you?

Answer
Nobody has said anything, because Amare started brainwashing the Suns fans earlier in the series with his cry baby talk about dirty playing. If this would have been Tony Parker the Spurs wouldn't have made the amature mistake of getting off the bench during the playoffs and costing the team two valuable players. These fouls happen during every series and all of a sudden every Sun's fan out there is a expert on fouls and dirty plays Thanks to their suspended players.

I want a good watch for running, swimming and cycling but there are so many and I don't know which one to pick. My price range is anywhere from 100-200 dollars. I would go to a store and ask , but where I live there is nowhere to buy anything like that. I just don't want to get ripped off. Please help?

Answer
On test, then, we have six GPS watches and one ringer â a mini bar-mounted GPS. The latter deserves its place here because itâs simply the cheapest way you can record your rides, making it a real alternative to a watch if youâre just planning to ride, rather than run or swim. The six watches range from ultra-high-end devices that are designed to maximise your training, letting you measure calories and heart rate, to units that simply record where youâve been and how fast you got there. Weâve also looked at Motorolaâs latest GPS watch that doubles as an MP3 player, and Suuntoâs high-spec navigation watch, ideal if youâre keen on mountain biking or fell walking too. Thereâs loads of choice, so make sure you really think about exactly what you want from your GPS watch before diving in; see the âWhat to look forâ section, below.

Suuntoâs X10 is a great navigation watch. Itâs a doddle to follow a route youâve already drawn via Suuntoâs online software. The X10 then guides you through a series of waypoints (500 max), using a digital bezel to point you in the right direction.

What are the top ten episodes of South Park?

i love this show, but have only recently started watching it. anyone got suggestions of great episodes?

Answer
1. Scott Tenorman Must Die- This episode is what defined South Park and marked it's beginning as a cultural phenomenon, in my opinion.
2. Imaginationland- Actually 3 episodes. These episodes ere originally planned to be feature movie, to be released at the end of South Park. Instead, they were made into 3 of the best episodes ever. Must sees.
3. Make Love Not Warcraft- Mocked the lives of millions of nerds. Amazing episode.
4. Trapped in the Closet- All about Scientology. The fact that people believe this scam is sad.
5. Towelie- You wanna get high?
6. It Hits the Fan- Say sh*t 162 times on air. I think it was a record.
7. Douche and Turd- "Vote or Die Mothafuckah, mothafuckah vote or die. Can't run from a .38 go ahead and try. Let your opinions be heard, you have a mothafuckin choice. Cause after I slit your throat you won't have a fuckin voice." Perhaps the best political satire, as well as song, in any South Park Episode ever.
8. The Biggest Douche in the Universe- This episode was a parody of that old show "Crossing Over." Very funny, with ending coming out of left field.
9. The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers- All about the worst ever porn video. Ever.
20. The Death of Eric Cartman- Very underrated episode, in my opinion. Also perhaps the most emotional we ever see Cartman.

Runner Ups- Cartmanland, Cartmanâs Mom Is a Dirty Slut / Cartmanâs Mom Is Still a Dirty Slut, Cartoon Wars (both parts), Merry Christmas Charlie Manson, Free Hat

Is it legal to use a heart rate monitor during a College or High School Cross Country race?

Also, is it legal to use something that might be considered a pacing device? I currently run using a Garmin 305 with heart rate monitor. I find that this device gives me a huge advantage when running with my friends. I seem to always know how fast or slow I should be going and exactly how much I have left in my tank. I'm curious whether college and/or High School runners are able to take advantage of this technology.

Answer
It depends on the sanctioning body, whether they allow watches or not. Because watches help the runner pace themself, the sanctioning body may consider them an illegal assist to the runner. In this scenario, the issue is not the heart rate monitor function, but the equipment it operates on.

I need a heart rate monitor for interval training?

dapo0130

I am going to start interval training (running) and need a watch which keeps track of the time. So I need it to go after 2 mins and then after 20seconds and so on.. I would like it if it had a heart rate monitor too and kept track of what my heart rate was at each interval so I can keep them.. What's the cheapest one that is relatvely good.

Answer
You don't really need a heart monitor.
Long before monitors were invented we just used our heart rate as taken by feeling your neck, if you are going to run again when your heart rate is below a certain level.
As far as a watch you can get a Timex ironman it is reasonably priced and will give you a count down mode for intervals.
I have used them for many years and they last for several years before replacing.

How to prepare for middle school track in 8 months?

running watches that track pace on ... 405 CX GPS Watch Sports Heart Rate Monitor Fitness Running | eBay
running watches that track pace image

Anesha

Hello there. I am going into 8th grade next school year and I want to try out for track in eight months. I really suck at running and my normal time for a full mile is 12 minutes. I want to be doing sprints if I make it and also improve my mile time. Any advice from people who did and who are doing middle school track?

Answer
Hi, I just finished 8th grade track, and we did a lot of good workouts that will be helpful to you for getting in shape for the season.
Here's a list of good track/distance workouts:

-interval training: for this you can sprint the straight parts of the track and jog at an easy pace for the curved parts (try doing this for 10 minutes or so at first and gradually increase)
This is especially good for sprints.

- whistle workout: have a friend, parent, or sibling- or even just by yourself-hold a stop watch: first sprint for 1:45 minutes, then jog for 3 minutes, then sprint for 1:30, jog for 2:45, sprint for 1:15, jog for 2:30- keep doing this till you've gotten down to 15 seconds sprinting.

-ladder workout: do a 1600, short break, 1500, short break, 800, short break, 400. Or do it in the opposite order ( this will especially help to lower your mile time)

- start doing distance runs, start running distance for 10 mins. Then try for 15, then 20 mins, and so forth.

- at the end of every week, go to the track and run a mile- keep track of your times so that you can see your progress.

I always have a tough time motivating myself, and if you have the same problem, think about how good you'll feel afterwards, and how much better you'll get. Making a training schedule helps a lot too.

Good luck, and I really hope this helped you! I'm sure you'll do great, track is lots of fun! :)

Why do F1 drivers swerve back and forth while they are following the pace car?

TKM

I've noticed this in every race I've ever seen, as soon as a yellow flag comes out the cars all start zig zagging back and forth across the track. Why do they do this?

Answer
This practice is widespread in all racing categories, from Karting to F1, for keeping as much heat in the tires as possible when driving slow.
In Formula one in particular it is not very effective although still useful.
It is very very difficult to put heat into a tire at such slow speeds in a car that is designed not only to do 200mph but also turn at that sort of speed.
And unlike a touring car that simply generates more heat when going fast and turning, the F1 car has the huge extra burden of downforce.
The F1 car triples it's weight at speed, this places a huge load on the tires.
So it's easy to understand that a tire designed to reach (and maintain) working temperature under such conditions cannot under any circumstances reach or even maintain adequate temp behind the pace car, not even close.
If it were designed so it could, it would overheat and be destroyed before the end of a single racing lap.
Any other type of race car can manage better, but not an F1 car.
Every qualifying session we hear about drivers complain about their failure to put heat in to the tires for their runs.
We even have examples where teams fail to heat up their tires throughout the whole weekend, they just can't put enough load on it even at racing speeds, lap after lap!
Toyota in Monaco springs to mind, they went from race win contenders to hopeless backmarkers in the space of one week.
They just couldn't get their rubber to work!
Another interesting side effect of all this is that you can't gradually build up to speed in an F1 car.
Flat out is the only way to go if you're looking to warm the tires and get decent grip.
If you can't push hard (and how could you of course if you're not a racing driver) you'll be skidding around, no grip.
You get much less g-force than advertised, then the F1 driver gets in the car and after a couple of laps it goes round corners like an F-16!
Check out this video, should be fun and educational at the same time:

Which polar heart rate monitor model is better between FT40M and RS300?

running watches heart rate monitor reviews on ... Culture Runners Watch | Running Watch Review | Running Watch Review
running watches heart rate monitor reviews image
Q. Which polar heart rate model would you recommend between the FT40M and RS300X?
I'm an FT7 owner, and i don't see much difference between the FT40M and the one i have right now. How come the FT40M is a bit more expensive than RS300? I feel (for the look of the pics in the website) that the RS300 is more complete.
I'm interested in running; i really don't mind not having ALL the features a Polar heart rate monitor could offer.

Answer
I recommend neither.
I'm not a fan of HR training, especially for beginners. HR training is for those individuals who are very experienced and very educated on exercise and fitness. HR monitors aren't 100% correct and don't always work either, so you can't feel dependent on them. Once you have a lot of experience with training you will know what your HR is just by paying attention to your effort level for your body. I can guess my HR very accurately, so a HR monitor for me would be a huge waste of money (and mine was).
If you are interested in running, just go running. Why spend tons of money before you try out a sport for a while and know it's something you want to do and it's something you want to train seriously for? Especially because as a beginner you should be paying 100% attention to your body, not HR numbers.

Some people really enjoy HR training and there are many benefits to it. I personally just think that once you have experience you can HR train without a HR monitor because you will learn to feel where your HR is without having to be told by a device.

I see them as a waste of time and money because training based on milage and effort does the exact same thing HR training does.

I would spend a lot of time looking at reviews of each kind and see what consumers have to say about them. Some HR monitors are chest straps that require that they are wet to function. In my experience, these don't work (at least mine never has, but I have the worlds worst brand of GPS watch, Garmin).

What is the best GPS watch for a distance runner?

Q. During the summer, I want a good GPS watch to clock 5+ mile long runs with... I want a watch that can tell me my minute-per-mile pace, miles ran, and how long I am running for, but is still a fairly reasonable price ($100-$200). What is the best website to order a GPS watch from, or just the best watch?

Answer
I have a Garmin 305. Its old, and they don't make them anymore. but you can still find them at Overstock.com.
It has a heart rate monitor. there are all kinds of accessories for it, too. It has every feature that you could ever want. It can upload and download stuff from your computer - and although its old - its software is new.
However its bulky , and ugly, and slow to find satellites (easy workaround - turn it on before you start warming up).
Amazon is a pretty good place to shop around. and the reviews are worth reading. DCRainmaker has a great website and he does very good reviews and has a lot of side by side comparisons.

I'm pretty sure the least expensive GPS watch is the Timex Marathon. and it does everything you want.
Oh, by the way. All GPS watches can not give you an accurate instantaneous pace. Some of them can be connected to a foot pod that can help with that. Also you can hit the lap button and get your pace for that lap. But if all you need it for is the features you listed you might be better off with a pedometer. If you have an ipod, the nike + kit is only $25.

How to get my 7 year old to a Broadway play?

I want to take my 7 year old daughter to see the Little Mermaid or The Lion King in NYC. I don't want to drive into and park in the city. I find the Amtrak fares from Wilmington, DE (our home) to NYC way too expensive. What combination of travel methods would you use to get to the show?

Answer
Good for you for wanting to take your daughter to see a show! I just took my nephew to see Shrek and he loved it.

Coming from Delaware, I would take 295 all the way up to the Trenton area to the station in Hamilton, NJ. Parking there is only $6 and it is really easy to purchase round trip tickets to Penn Station NY. The fare is $20.50 for adults and half-price for children.

Two things to watch:

1. Make sure you buy your tickets from the vending machine or from the ticket office before getting on the train, because they will charge you each a $5 surcharge if you get on the train with no ticket.

2. Do not get confused by the station in Newark named "Penn Station." It is sometimes confusing for people who are not from the area. There are 2 Penn Stations on the route. The final stop is what you want -- Penn Station New York.

The train schedule from Hamilton is excellent. It runs just about every half hour. Returning from Penn Station in the City, you just need to look for the train that says "Northeast Corridor Line" and make sure it is making a stop in Hamilton. They will announce all of the stops before the train departs.

Get a cab from Penn Station to the theater. It's really easy and not too expensive. The taxi stand is right outside of the NJ Transit area of Penn Station on 7th Avenue by the entrance to Madison Square Garden.

On the way back, it is more challenging to get a cab, but if you walk over to Broadway or 7th Avenue, you should be fine.

The drive to Hamilton is pretty easy. The station is right off of I-295. The train ride is easy too. You do not have to transfer and you just get off at the last stop. On the way home, you just have to listen for the announcements. After Princeton Junction, you'll hear the call for Hamilton station.

Good luck and have fun!

How come there are lifeguard vehicles in California but not in New York City?

alkid10

I live in NYC, and i go to coney island beach and the beaches around there. im curious why aren't there lifeguard vehicles like the ones they have in California?

Answer
There are; They are only around in the summer. Read this job advertising for lifeguard applicants,

"Come to New York City and join a team of skilled lifeguards who safeguard our 14 miles of ocean beaches. Be part an organization of over 1,200 dedicated New York City Lifeguards with the Parks Department this summer who watch over 20 million swimmers. Although lifeguarding in New York City is challenging, it is also extremely rewarding. Lifeguards watch over skilled and unskilled swimmers and are called upon to make split second decisions that can mean the difference between life and death. As a New York City Lifeguard, you learn to work as part of a team in a variety of high pressure situations. Our beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day"

NYC lifeguards use department of recreation vehicles, not big yellow life guard trucks like they do on the west coast. In the off season, FDNY Rescue and Squad Companies and NYPD ESU perform water rescue duties.

In the west coast, the "beach season" last almost all year long, and full-time beach patrols are necessary. they are not on the east coast, which has a limited beach season due to our weather.

What is the proof for and against evolution?

running watches academy on ... watch the website for any changes or additional tours added throughout
running watches academy image

Confused

I have been watching yahoo answers for a few months, but just made a account so I could ask, what is the proof for and against evolution?

I see many in here say there is tons of proof for it and none against, and others say there is tone against it and none for. The can not both be true, and I'm confused.
I will post this in science, and in religion.
To the evolutionists, what proof is there?
To the creationists, what proof is there?

Answer
As you will notice from the other answers so far, the word "proof" is your first problem.

In science it's really important to understand the difference between *evidence* and "proof." Evidence accumulates. Proof is absolute. In other words, evidence is based on observation piled on observation ... no one of which "proves" something, but all of which considered *together* makes it more and more likely. "Proof" is absolute ... once proved, it can never be "unproved" ... it is proved by logic alone (not on observations which are dependent on the accuracy of our senses).

So anybody who claims to have "proof" for or against evolution, is either using the word "proof" to mean *evidence* ... or is utterly confused about science.

Second, as you listen to arguments from both sides ... consider the *SOURCE*. Look at the web-sites they refer you to.

Web sites that *support* evolution will either be major science organizations (like the National Academy of Sciences), or major Universities (look for the .edu in the web path, instead of .com). If it's not one of those, then look at the bottom of these sites for a list of *references*. Supporters of evolution will always be able to point to papers, publications, journals, books, and other sources in the SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. (E.g. even wikipedia, which is attacked by Creationists for being "biased", has a substantial "References" section at the bottom of every single page, backing every claim made on the page.)

Web sites that claim to *disprove* evolution will never, ever be major science sites, or major universities. They will primarily be religious sites (even though many of them try to disguise this fact ... as in the way the site 'allaboutscience.org' is run by organization 'allaboutGOD.com'). Or they will use formal sounding names like "The Discovery Institute", even though they are not affiliated with any scientific organization or university at all. They will NEVER list references to actual *scientific* papers, other than to refute them, or to quote something out of context that contradicts what the scientist actually said.

So with that in mind ... here is a site published by the University of California:
"What is the evidence for evolution?"
http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/search
/topicbrowse2.php?topic_id=46

And here is one of its pages (again from the University of California):
"Lines of evidence: The science of evolution"
http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/article/0_0_0/lines_01

And finally, here's a well-known site dedicated to the scientific evidence for evolution. Again, notice the References section at the bottom backing all the claims made on the page. That's what gives the site credibility:

How good is the new Red Jacket Firearms KMP 5.56mm Semiautomatic Rifle sold at Academy Sports and Outdoors?

Kyle

I am stuck between buying one of the new RJF ARs being sold at Academy Sports and the Windham Weaponry AR, anyone have any insight or suggestions?? Thanks

Answer
I have been shooting AR's in military long distance shootng, NRA Highpower Rifle Competition and hunting Alaska since the late 1970's.

I would not be caught dead with a RJF firearm unless it was personally given to me by Will's daughter and signed by her. That might be ok. Because anyone who saw me with it - would assume I am some brain dead gungeek who's fallen for the latest show on TV.

Way, way too many people are buying RJF guns to simply be 'taticool' with their buddies who dont know squat about guns but love to watch the show. They are no different than the 6 year old girls who run out an demand Barbie stuff from Mom and Dad after watching the Barbie commercials on TV.

If you dont know the difference between one gun and another - dont buy it. Just because it has a cool logo does not mean it will fit you, or, suit your purpose. It simply boggles my mind that people will spend hours trying on $12 shoes but wont take ten minutes to get a little trigger time on something they will be plucking down $1,000 or so on. Makes no sense.

I wont pay $300 for a pair of Nike sneakers that do the exact same thing as a $40 pair. But I will pay that for a pair of high quality outdoor boots that are warmer, more waterproof, and offer better protection to the ankle than a $40 pair.

You should visit the RJF web site and make an informed decison on what features their rifles offer that the other WW AR does not. You are going to need to know this sh!t - because on the shooting range you are gonna be treated like a brain dead mom's basement living person who buys what ever the TV tells them to - so - you better know your stuff........ or enjoy being ignored and not taken seriously.

Example. Back 8 years ago I wanted a new 45 CCW pistol. I spent 4 hours pawing all the S&W, Sigs, Glocks, and a new gun made by Springfield Armory they had just put in the case the morning - the XD in 45acp. I liked it had no thumb safety to interfer with a panic draw like the 1911's, had a loaded chamber indicator, and, hammer back indicator. I bought it. Three months later it received tons of awards, got Pistol of the Year - and everyone who saw it, gave me sh!t about buying it only because it was on the cover of all the magazines. They only shut up when I told them how I choose it before the thing got famous. You get that RJF gun and dont do your homework - expect the same treatment the whole time you own the gun and show it in public.

Benjamin W

The FCC has decided that a good, working TV will be obsolete, and we all have to buy new sets. Ok...I may be in the minority, but I don't care much for super life like images...I'd rather go into real life and see it.

For those who do want an ultra crisp picture, let them get that new set, but don't force the rest of us to.

I compare this to radio. I've had very old radios that still would work today using today's signals. There co-exists satellite radio on another bandwidth for higher quality programs, that those ppl who want it can pay for.

Again, why, are we being forced to buy a new TV set, if what we have isn't broken, and if the individual doesn't want a newer TV.

I smell a rat here, and wanna know what's REALLY going on.

Answer
When I recently purchased an HD flat screen I was plesantly surprised to noticed a few more channels that I don not get on the other sets in our house, (easy to determine as we only use anteane), subsequently, by their use of the word obsolete, doesn't mean older models will quit working. Its just that the stations availiable will continue to be minimal, and decreasing in numbers, as the numbers of people who own newer models grow. This is as inevitable as the sales of 8 track tapes gave way to, cassettes, gave way to disc, now giving way to many new pocket sized uploadable microchip data storage. As the technology increases, also does the market and competition, to make better and cheaper, which just eventually bleeds over to even the most frugal of consumer. Imagine how much was paid for the first digital watches that can now be found in gumball machines, (and thats with separate time zones, games, and other added features) As for the "rat" theory, I think its only logical to assume, that there are information gathering technologies involved, in these everyday items. There will always be the "weak can't compete so cheat" , "save all the best jobs for OUR separate faction favoritism gang" which rapes the "all men are created equal concept" and the "Team Human populate the Universe" ideology, we will either evolve toward, or become extinct. We won't get a better container to land in if we destroy this one. We will be looking out the eyeballs of an insect, remembering all the times we were human and did nothing to make it better...and would trade a million years of bug servitude (carrying bug sh!ts back and forth) for just one day in the life of a human you may now think you dispise. Obviously government will have higher levels of technology than an ordinary citizen, but who gets to make these determinations.... of who is allowed knowledge, and is able to be on the "GET" side of corruption, and who is labeled "slave class". It really won't matter though, because soon enough of us will evolve to see all forms of separtatists hoarding as the tatle tale signs of the weak and cowardly. In the Olympics do they saw off 2 feet of the stick of the best pole vaulter? or strap lead weights on the fastest runners? The fairness concept is one of honor to those who deserve their rightful place, by the standard of working harder, learning more, because they simply cared enough to make some contribution, and would rather turn down some easy money scam, than give up their integrity of "being". This sense of loyalty to all others equally, is the all inclusive gift within realization of existence experience, that those who are flippant and sneaky, are only of the pathetic class who the higher evolved will always feel sorry for, no matter how much luxury they flaunt. This does not imply that all those who have a decent level of comforts are necessarily negative function, some are just better with money., but all this is probably more for a society, humanity, thread...sorry if I prattled on a bit.

Long Distance Runners vs. Short Distance Runners?

Runner

Ok so me and my friend got into a debate. I say that long-distance runners [such as cross country runners like myself] are REAL runners because they have the endurance. Whereas he claims that short distance runners [such as sprinters like he is] are the REAL runners because they have the speed.
Who is right & whyy?

Answer
One person says, "I can do the 100M dash in under 11 seconds."
The second person says, "I can do a sub 40 min. 10K"
A third person says, "I can do a marathon sub 3 hours".
A fourth person says, "I can do a sub 40 min 10K run, after a 1500M swim and 25mile bike."
An 80 year old nun says, "I plan to be the first woman over the age of 80 to complete the Ironman."
To Sister Madonna Buder you're both ultra short distance runners but runners none the less.

How can I work my way up to running 10 miles by the end of the summer?

running watch keeps pace on Entertainment & Comics Press (E&C) Proudly Presents Comic Book News ...
running watch keeps pace image

hello.

I need to be able to run 10 miles at the end of the summer. Help me with a plan or tips etc. thanks!

Answer
Sarah, it would be helpful to know if you have any time issues here. However, presuming that time is not an issue:
The main thing is to be able to build up your endurance. One key is to do what we do when training for marathons, and that's LSD: Long Slow Distance.
When doing an LSD run (often just called a "long run"), you plan to run about a minute to 90 seconds per mile SLOWER than your normal 10K race pace. If you do not have a PR for 10K, then take you mile time and run about 2 minutes slower per mile.
After each 15-20 minutes at that pace, slow down to a walk in order to recover. That is, to get more oxygen into your body. Then start running again for another 15-20 minutes at the same pace as before. Keep alternating like that.
Each week, add another two miles to the overall length of your Long Run.
Now, if finishing time is an issue, here are a few tips to increase your speed:
Keep building up your long run until you reach 8 miles. Then, on alternate weekends, do "repeat miles". That is, run miles at your 5K race pace, taking a minute or two to pause after each mile. The number of repeat miles would be half of the distance of your long run from the previous week.
Thus, your chart of your weekend Long Run activity would look like this:
Starting with Week 1: 4 miles (or whatever you are able to do for starters).
Week 2: 6 miles
Week 3: 8 miles
Week 4: 4 repeat Miles
Week 5: 10 Miles
Week 6: 5 repeat Miles
Week 7: 12 miles
Week 8: 6 repeat miles
Week 9: 14 miles
Week 10: 7 repeat miles

The idea of going longer than your target distance is that you will be running them at a pace that is slower than normal. All you are trying to do here is to build up your endurance. The level of confidence you should have if you follow this pattern should be enormous. If you can do the workouts, you should be able to do the run!

By the way, one other rule to remember: NEVER have hard runs on consecutive days. Whatever day you pick for your Long Run should have an easy day scheduled on both sides of it. If you pick Sunday for your Long Run, make sure your runs on Saturday and Monday are always easy....relaxed pace..not too long as far as distance goes...no hills to speak of. Hill runs are good on Tuesday, with a good Tempo run on Thursday.Wednesday and Friday would be easier runs. If yor long run is on Sunday, consider using Saturday as a rest day. You will not lose any conditioning when taking one day of rest.

By the way, I always chose Sunday for my long runs because most of my marathons were run on Sundays. Whatever you do, make sure you keep it consistent.

Good luck and good running!

Please note that the pause after each of the "repeat miles" should be sufficient to let your heart rate return to near normal. Presuming you have a healthy heart, this should not take a long time. Just be sure to have a watch with you to check your pulse after each mile. Generally, wait about a minute or two for it to slow down before taking the pulse for the first time. After a while, you should get the hang of it.

What are some songs about running away from things?

I am majorly into music. I am working on some playlists for a friend. He told me that he is a runner. As in, he runs from relationships, etc because he's scared. What are some good songs that could relate to this? They don't have to be recent, or a certain genre.

Answer
Landlocked Blues- Bright Eyes

If you walk away I walk away
first tell me which road you will take
I don't want to risk our paths crossing someday
so you walk that way I'll walk this way

and the future hangs over our heads
and it moves with each current event
until it falls all around like a cold steady rain
just stay in when it's lookin' this way

and the moon's laying low in the sky
forcing everything metal to shine
and the sidewalk holds diamonds like a jewelry store case
they argue "walk this way," "no walk this way"

and laura's asleep in my bed
as I'm leaving she wakes up and says
"I dreamed you were carried away on the crest of a wave
baby don't go away, come here"

and there's kids playing guns in the street
and one's pointing his tree branch at me
So I put my hands up I say:
"Enough is enough,
If you walk away I walk away."
(and he shot me dead)

I found a liquid cure
for my landlocked blues
it will pass away
like a slow parade
it's leaving but I don't know how soon

and the world's got me dizzy again
you'd think after 22 years I'd be used to the spin
and it only feels worse when I stay in one place
so I'm always pacing around or walking away
I keep drinking the ink from my pen
and I'm balancing history books up on my head
but it all boils down to one quotable phrase
"If you love something give it away"
A good woman will pick you apart
a box full of suggestions for your possible heart
But you may be offended, and you may be afraid
but don't walk away, don't walk away

We made love on the living room floor
with the noise in the background from a televised war
And in the deafening pleasure I thought I heard someone say
"If we walk away, theyâll walk away"
But greed is a bottomless pit
And our freedom's a joke we're just taking a piss
And the whole world must watch the sad comic display
If you're still free start runnin' away
'cause we're comin' for ya!

I've grown tired of holding this pose
I feel more like a stranger each time I come home
So I'm making a deal with the devils of fame
Sayin' let me walk away, please
You'll be free child once you have died
from the shackles of language and measurable time
And then we can trade places, play musical graves
till then walk away walk away walk away walk away
So I'm up at dawn, putting on my shoes
I just want to make a clean escape
I'm leaving but I don't know where to
I know I'm leaving but I don't know where to

Ideas for a short story set in the 1940s?

In my creative writing class, we must write a historical fiction short story. I know much about the 1940s, so I will be writing about it. The problem is that I am having a terrible time thinking of an idea. I would really like to write about a lady, and I do not want to write about the war. The help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer
how about changing identity? this would be an easy subject, with a heap of possibilities; the reason she decided to- did she have to, what was she running from, will she be found out- was she doing it for money, or to escape something?? & how she does it- steal a card from someone else, was she accidently mixed up with someone else after an air raid??
if youre american, you could have her a woman come to volunteer here- as many women did, before america entered the war.

in the uk during the war, everyone had ID cards, though without a photograph on them. these were supposed to be carried at all times (useful for identifying bodies after a air raid), & were used by people to get their ration books (most food, most fabric & clothing, & even things like cigarettes were rationed). however, since the ID cards had no photographs on them, it would be easy to 'change' your own identity, or steal one from a dead person.
your character could claim amnesia (quite common with so many bombs falling; people got hit on the head all the time), or partial amnesia~ 'i only know my name, but i dont know anything else'.

during the war many people moved far away from home to work. if their family back home were killed, or they had little or no family, it would be easier to to start anew. with so many people returning home after a night in an air raid shelter, many documents were lost in homes, so it wouldnt be anything out of the ordinary for someone to have 'lost everything but they clothes they stood up in'. there was no time to make extensive enquiries about someone who was 'lost' in that way; the war was horribly confusing and hurried. someone suffering from shock, 'blast' (the after effects of being near to a bomb), or a bash on the head, would have been sent to a nursing home (a kind of hospital) in the countryside, to recover, then found a place to live & a job to do.

people moved all over the uk in the war. women were conscripted (ie, the government made it a legal requirement they had to work in some way) to join one of the forces, or work in munitions, fire watching etc.

many women found the war to be a liberating experience. though there was the constant fear of losing loved ones, or being killed onesself, it also freed women from the shakels of domsticity. as in the first world war, women were called upon to fill the jobs done by men gone off to fight. jobs previously closed to women (women were not allowed to work in many jobs simply for being a woman -_-) were suddenly opened up. heaps found the war a 'blessing in disguise'.

the other thing women experianced was working with people of other classes~ upper class women worked alongside working class women from slums. because everyone recived the same 'points', rich or poor, there was a shared sense of identity; to borrow from churchill, the war showed the best of people, the best of britian; our "finest hour".
so you could have your character run away from an unhappy marriage and start again miles away, or change her class and background & move up or down the social scale.

for your story, since its short, it might be interesting to just cover a day, or couple of days, or have someone waiting for an important appointment, going over the events in their mind which led the to that point.

if you have time, or want to read on the era regardless of your essay, here are some books ive enjoyed reading~ your library will have, or be able to order them for you.
non fiction~ debs at war- just read this, very fun. stories of upper class women who joined the services- worked on the land, the WRENS- womens' royal navy, etc. filled with very funny anecdotes about not knowing anything about sex, or shopping, or laundry, as well as the bravery of many women, and the men they worked beside http://www.amazon.co.uk/Debs-at-War-1939-1945-1939-45/dp/0753820781/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348493894&sr=1-1
dappled sunlight- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dappled-Sunlight-Land-Girls-Story/dp/0722332033/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1348493832&sr=8-2 beautiful memoir from woman who went from town to remote farm to work on the land, in the Womens' Land Army

one of my all time fave books/tv series. brilliant, filled with superb details of live above and below 'stairs' (think of downton).

fiction
