Good watch for Running?

Emily Gill

Hi,
I'm after a watch that can measure my distance and time when out running. I have heard Garmin is really good but not sure which one, plus I'd rather not spend too much money!

Thanks!

Answer
The cheapest Garmin, the 205 will do everything you need for about £100, though it is a bit bulky and slower than the newer ones to get satellite reception - so not so good for a girls wrist maybe? The newer 405 is smaller and faster but because it is new it is about twice the price.

I would recommend Garmin because the watch is all one unit - other systems have a separate satellite receiver and watch meaning you have to wear 2 things - these are a bit cheaper though

As a matter of personal preference I would avoid the overpriced Nike+ GPS watch - expensive and does the same as the cheapest Garmin plus you can only view your runs on a basic, but advert filled Nike website (I want to run... I don't want to shop) - but if you are looking at that price range then consider the adidas Micoach (GPS and a Heart Rate Monitor - better value)

I am a beginner runner and i need help looking for a good watch.?

emarie

i want something cheap but will tell me my distance and perhaps my pace. i found this watch on ebay and i don't know anything about all the details it gives. any runners who know these things out there who can tell me if this would be a good watch?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CASIO-SDB100-4A-LADIES-PINK-RUNNING-PACE-60-LAP-MEMORY-SPORTS-WATCH-4-ALARMS-/230688557948?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item35b61c0b7c#ht_2522wt_982

Answer
If you want a watch that tells you pace/distance etc.. It's gonna cost you much more than that.. Honestly I've been running for about 7 years and my watch or choice is a $7 watch from Walmart. All you need is something cheap with a stop watch. When you have a watch that gives you your pace and distance etc it tends to make you focus too much on those things and less on your run. When you run without them you can just go for as long as you need to and focus more on how you feel and what your body is telling you then your watch.

What training/GPS watch to buy?

Leonard Mc

Hello,
as i have mentioned before i am kind of a beginner runner. Im doing quite well, already have placed running in my every day schedule . Ive read about all these training /GPS running watches on the market and i think i should buy one. I would love to track my training and i also saw that some have set programmes but im so confused on picking the right one for me. Please help!
Thanks!

Answer
Ahh, the watch search..
Been there, done that, love to share.

First off, it totally depends on what stats you are looking for and how much money you willing to spend.
There are watches that track distance, calories, pace, time and heart rate if you get a heart rate monitor (i would advise that, specially as a smoker).

There are watches that track all the above while cycling or swimming too. In fact there are even watches that have even a barometric altimeter, compass and a hunt/fish calendar..Ok yeah i know, not for running, but still its amazing.
As Apollenaire stated above me, i swear by garmin too.

If you want to expand your training to cycling and swimming, i strongly recommend the Garmin Forerunner 310xt. Its as far as i know the only watch out there that can deliver on all 3 modes and is 100% waterproof. http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/whrm-review-the-ultimate-tool-or-just-another-stop-watch/
If you want to just have a watch to track your running and all that in a really really really simple way, id get the Forerunner 110. Its made just for running and is as easy to use as a stop watch.(plus it looks too cool and comes in many colors) http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/garmin-forerunner-110-gps-sport-watch-with-heart-rate-monitor-review-think-pink/

Note: if you do get a heart rate monitor and you dont like the strap , good thing about garmin is that you can buy a polar strap and it will work fine with the garmin transmitor, but the polar transmitor doesnt work with a garmin watch.

Take care and keep running!!

Garmin GPS watch (Forerunner 405CX)?

Connor

Hi all,
I just bought a new Garmin GPS running watch. This is my first watch.
I must admit I got sucked into buying it quickly because I got it for a good deal on Amazon.
This watch seems to be a great peice of equipment that will offer me more than what my app on my iPhone does. The only thing that has me questioning the product is that it doesn't have a vibration alert. I wear headphones while running, and I refuse to run without headphones, I love my music.

For those of you that use these watches, how much of an issue do you see this as?
Is it still relativly easy to hear with headphones on, or it is not that big of a deal as long as you glace at the watch every few minutes?

I'm wondering if it's worth returning the watch and spending the extra $100 on the 610.

Answer
First of all, I have only owned a 205. I have never had a single problem with it. I have never had a need for a vibration feature. I rarely use music though. When I do, I glance at my watch quite a bit. Never bothered me.

I have friends with both the 305 and 405. I would suggest getting the 305. I like the buttons on it more than the ones on the 405.

I haven't really heard much about the 610. I can't imagine a vibration alert would be enough to make me spend $100.

Will this PC run everything?

Clel

Hello, I'm looking to buy a PC (doesn't have to be 'gaming' PC), and I was considering this one:
http://www.amazon.com/CyberpowerPC-Gamer-Ultra-GUA880-Desktop/dp/B0089KDCIU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375386698&sr=8-1&keywords=pc

My question is, can this game run everything on max settings? E.g. SC2 on ultra settings, or even next-gen games like COD: Ghosts, AC4, Watch Dogs, etc. (everything on max settings) without problems? If not, can you send me to the link that will? Under $1000 please.
If you could please add a link to the computer you're talking about, that'd be great.

Answer
first thing its not saving 160$ its paying 160$ for the build...............

everything is fine till the gt 610 graphics came out......you say you have 1k$ to spend????????

you should find a system with fx-4300 or fx-6300 or any fx cpu 8 gb 1600mhz ram buy it and dont spend any more than 500$ for it and buy amd hd 7850 2gb about 150$......

Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch - Owner Reviews?

Q. Started running on a daily basis since the start of the year and I really want to start tracking my progress during the run. I want to buy a heart rate monitor wrist watch, but I'm very suspicious of salesman and don't really trust review web sites.

Are there any heart rate watch owners around that can give me a review and recommendation of a watch they own?

Answer
Agreed - Garmin is the way to go and there's no better choice than the Forerunner 305 (see here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSWCQA?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000CSWCQA for the lowest prices). It's the premium choice for serious runners and even though there are more expensive models, this is the superior choice.

With that said, as you're just starting out you might want to try out the Forerunner 50 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UW5SYG?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000UW5SYG) so you can see if heart rate charting is really for you. This model is about half the price of the 350 and whilst it doesn't give the same range of features and convenience, it will still give you the raw information you need.

Either way, heart rate watches are a great way to track your progress, and I hope yours continues.

Hope that helps!

Answer
u sound interested n yeah i did be interested in u

u dont have to be bad to make me trip

Can someone please check my essay for grammatical errors, run on and fragmented sentences?

Q. We often find ourselves thinking back on our accomplishments and the downfalls we experienced during our high school year and often wonder how friends and teachers played an important role in our year throughout high school.
I remember waking up that morning knowing that I was officially a freshman. My head was just spinning with sheer excitement. The moment I walked in the high school, it suddenly hit me that I had taken a major step into life. The first day was the premier of Freshmen Academy. As freshman, this was always something to look forward to. The whole point of Freshmen Academy was to Spoil the new students and give them an incredible first year. Meeting new people has always been exciting for me, so naturally I enjoyed seeing new faces and befriending everyone I saw and talk to in class. Throughout the year we played games such as who could be told a joke while they had a mouth full of water and not laugh. We also went on several school trips; for instance, we took a field trip to a nearby theater to watch the Theatrical performance of Romeo and Juliet; it was absolutely amazing! Every Friday morning before the football game, the school had a pep rally to get the students hyped up for the big Rivalry that afternoon. The dance line and cheerleaders performed their routines in front of the student body and throw out free t-shirts to the students. Sometimes they had student dance-offs where you could win a free ticket to the game. We finished off the pep rally with our famous chant from the whole student body, âGo Rebels!â The day they announced that tennis tryouts were being held, I almost peed in my pants. I have always loved sports and a great new challenge. Although many people told me it was tough to make the team, I took on the challenge and made the cut. The next day I decided to take on the challenge and join the cross country team. Although many people told me I would never endure it I stuck to my decision and defeated the challenge.
However, not all memories in high school are pleasant such as the mockery and bullying I received from jealous students. Whenever I excelled at something, whether it be getting a high grade on a test or excelling at sports, there was always someone there to mock and judge my achievements. Though I tried really hard to put those mockery comments behind me, I always seemed to think back on them and ask myself, âWhat did I done wrong?â It amazed me how it amused some people to make unfriendly remarks toward another personâs achievements. Due to this bullying and mocking, I chose to seclude myself from the peers around me because I thought they believed in slandering me. I began feeling insecure and uncertain about everything I did. My goal was to go to school and come back home as soon as school let out. I could no longer walk down the hallways with passion; instead, I was like a stranger to the world. I hid my face from the world. Everywhere I walked shadows loomed over me spitting out mockery and shame on. My grades in school began to tumble, my performance in sport declined tremendously. I felt tired all the time, I felt like a heavy burden was laid upon my chest. I began to believe that my only friend was myself. I stopped doing homework which worsened my grades. However, I realized that my friends and teachers were with me throughout this moment in my life. They had been reaching for me and I had been shoving them away. My teachers made sure that I walked the hallways without someone shoving or making remarks about the way I dressed or the way I talked. My friends reserved a seat for me at the lunch table and shared their food with me. My whole world ignited in silver linings as I realized that I could not let my mind stoop to the past and drown suffocates in sorrow.

Answer
The numbers are not sequential because my reply was too long, and I had to take a lot of useful (and some not-so-useful) information out.

(1)"The moment I walked *in* the high school".
>The moment I walked into the school./ The first time I set foot in the school.

(3)"..Freshmen Academy..."
>FreshMAN Academy, the *adjective* is always singular "freshman" e.g.: freshman year, freshman dance etc. "freshmen" is the plural noun, as in: "There are several freshmen standing over there."[REF. 1]

(4)"As freshman..."
>As a freshman/ As freshmen... (it was always something for US to look forward to)

(6)"...who could be told a joke while they had a mouth full of water..."
>avoid the passive voice: "...who could hear a joke..."

(8)"...cheerleaders performed their routines in front of the student body and throw out free t-shirts to the students..."
>the "student body" is figurative:

"...the cheerleaders *would* perform their routines in front of *the students*, and (would) throw out free t-shirts (to everyone)."

(9)"...I almost peed in my pants."
> "...I was incredibly excited/ I was beside myself with excitement/ I could hardly contain my *excitement*."

(10)"The next day I decided to take on the challenge...'
>: "The next day, I decided to take on (yet) another challenge..."

(11)"I stuck to my decision and defeated the challenge"
>"...and succeeded."/ "...and was successful."

(12)"However, not all memories in high school are pleasant such as"
>"However, not all memories *of* high school are pleasant (ones) *comma*, such as..."

(13)"...from jealous students."
>Did you steal their boyfriends? I think you mean "...from *envious* students."

When one is envious of someone else, they would be happy if the other person lost what they had.
When someone is jealous, they will only be happy if they get that exact thing the other person has, because they feel it rightfully belongs to them. Your friends may have been *envious* of your success or popularity, but not *jealous*.

(14)"...I tried really hard..."
>I tried *very* hard

(15)"...to put those mockery comments behind me..."
>Try: "to put *the* mockery and negative comments..."
Because "the", unlike "those" is not sensitive to number as a definite article ohhhh, just trust me.

(16)âWhat did I done wrong?â
>present perfect (for reported speech): "What have I done wrong?" (up to this point) OR pluperfect (for narration) "...I would wonder what I had done wrong"

(17)"Due to this bullying and mocking"
>"Because of this..."/ "As a result of this..."
"Due to" is highly disputed, but don't worry about it, stick with me [REF. 2]

(18)"...from the peers around me..."
>wordy, try: "...from my peers.."

(19)"...I thought they believed in slandering me."
>: "...saying bad things about me/spreading rumors..."

(20)"...and come back home..."
>: "...return home..."

(21)"...walk down the hallways with *passion*..."
>"confidence"

(22)"...I was like a stranger to the world. I hid my face from the world..."
>one or the other, but not both.

(23)"Everywhere I walked shadows loomed over me spitting out mockery and shame on."
>"Everywhere I walked *comma*, shadows loomed over me *comma*, showering me with mockery and shame."

(24)"My grades in school began to tumble..."
>"My grades began to plummet/fall/slide..."
Try not to end a sentence with a preposition.

(25)"...I felt like a heavy burden was laid upon my chest."
>"I felt *as though* there were a heavy weight on my chest."

(26)"which worsened my grades."
>: "...which caused my grades to worsen."

(27)"my friends and teachers were with me throughout this moment in my life."
>t:"...had been with me throughout..."

(28)"...I had been shoving them away..."
>"pushing"

(28)"...without someone shoving or..."
>"without someone shoving *me*, or..."

(29)"My friends reserved a seat..."
>again, things they did habitually in the past:"...*would* *save* a seat..."

(30)"My whole world ignited in silver linings as I realized that I could not let my mind stoop to the past and drown suffocates in sorrow."
>let's just rewrite this, yes?:
"I began to appreciate the positive aspects of my life, and realized that I could not succumb to past events and continue to drown myself in sorrow."

Good luck, keep writing!

I have never been a runner, but i am interested in starting to jog/run.any tips on how tostart being a runner?

Sheila

want to lose weight and get in shape, is running a good way? any particulars i should know? warm ups? shoes? any running or jogging advice for someone whos never run a day in her life :) ????

Answer
That's great that you are starting to run. Yes, Runners do have very lean bodies. Running is one of the few activities that you can carry on with almost your entire life, and its great with a partner but you don't need one.

First off make sure you stretch before AND after your walks/runs.

Use a decent pair of athletic shoes. Someone above mentioned that Nike and Adidas aren't good options. I run competitively and Adidas makes a great shoe for people who tend to roll their foot to the side (over-pronator). Nike works well if you have a narrow foot. Brooks, Asics are some of the better brands. Anyways its not so much the brand but what kind of shoe works best for your foot and running style. If you have the money its a good idea to go to a store just for running shoes and have a sales person watch how you run and help you pick out a shoe that's best for you. Its good if they can see your old shoe too - so that they know what parts you wear out first. If you don't have the money for a pricey shoe go to one of those stores and just take the name down of the shoes they recommend and try to get them cheaper off eBay or at a discount store.

It takes a while to build up to a level where you can maintain a constant pace for the length of your run. I've heard a lot of people have success with a RUN/WALK program.

Example: http://www.targetshooting.ca/reframerize...

Basically you work on building up the distance you walk. And then ease into running. Also with a weekly plan like the one above you know when to look for results and don't get down when you can't run fast right off the bat. This will you feel less out of breath.

One of the people above said not to breathe out of your mouth. That's the oddest thing I've ever heard. You breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Don't worry about getting dehydrated. Just make sure you drink water constantly during the day. Keep a water bottle around.

The clomping thing will get better with time. I still struggle with it and have been running for 16 years. Try to push off from the ball of your foot - its just after your big toe and before your arch. That will give you a less clopping style to running.

If you do twist or pull something on a run make sure to ice it when you get home. But not for any more than 20 minutes at a time. The gel packs at pharmacy's work great.

Best of luck with getting fit!

Good running shoes for people with flat feet?

Rey Perez

My feet have been hurting at work lately and I got a callous because I havent been wearing the right shoe. What kind of sneaker shoe brand should I buy

Answer
Vibrams are the WORST shoe you can wear if you have flat feet. Your feet NEED support and vibrams are the closest thing to running barefoot as in no support.

If there is a local running store near you - a store like Fleet Feet, not something like Sports Authority or Feet; just do a search on running stores), head there and get a gait analysis, and make sure it's more than having a saleperson simply watch you walk across the store in your socks. A decent store will have you on a treadmill where they can gauge your stride, footstrike, etc. Big box stores like Sports Authority, though they might have salespeople that are runners, are really not the place to get the right shoe for you if you have no idea what shoe to get.

Even though I technically have normal arches based on the wet test (dip your feet in water, step on a newspaper to see the imprint; if you see an arch, normal foot, flat foot or high arch), my feet are flat, I am an extreme heel-striker, and I am a severe overpronator. While I was in the correct group of shoes (stability), I needed a sturdier shoe.

You might find that your foot type may be wrong, or that depending on factors other than your build, like your age, weight (a heavier runner might need something with more cushioning), how long you have been running, where you run (pavement, trail), your average pace (fast runner or steady slow runner), and how many miles you plan to put on your shoes per week can determine your correct type of shoe.

A good store will not pressure you to buy their shoes, though some will do the gait analysis for free if you buy a shoe they have there. You can take their information and do a bit more research on the shoe(s) suggested and either purchase them through Ebay (they do have lots of new in box shoes, which is why I do all my shopping there). Many times online stores like runningwarehouse have sales on last season shoes, which are still new and often priced quite nicely. Be prepared to replace the shoes every 300 or so miles, since they will break down in the midsole even though the shoes look new. So be prepared to purchase several pairs over the span of a year. Trust me, there are few things more painful than running in a pair of shoes that are no longer good for running.

No one brand or style of shoe is better since everyone's feet are different. While I love my Asics Kayanos, many hate it and prefer something with even more cushioning, like the Brooks Trance. I started out on Nike Shox before I realized that these are pretty awful shoes - for me - though many like them. A good running store can at least narrow down for you types of shoes that you might like, and if you are willing to experiment (get two pairs of shoes and alternate them), you might find out that the one shoe you would never otherwise consider would be your shoe of choice. My husband, who has wide, flat feet and overpronates, uses the Brooks Beast, but depending on your personal biomechanics (even some flat footed runners are underpronators, others overpronate), you might be suggested other brands or styles of shoe.

A good site to start your search on a shoe for you is on runnersworld.com; there is a link on the left side of the main page for shoe finder and reviews, and perhaps that can also help you.

Advice on GPA watches for runners?

Lisa

I need to purchase a gps watch to keep track of my runs. I need real life advice from people who have used these devices. Any information you can give me, good and bad, on a gps watch that would be good for running would be awesome. Thanks in advance
I should also mention I have a macbook. Is Garmin Mac compatible?

Answer
By & large, runners tend to go with Garmin because they tend to be the best all-in-one GPS devices. They have a ton of different models, so you'll need to compare the features of each & consider which ones you need. I'd start with this page:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142

From there, you can choose different models to compare side-by-side. All the Garmins I've had have been reliable, durable, long-lasting, & easy to use (if you read the manual). Personally, I like the models that include a heart monitor, but that's just my preference.

Good luck in your search!

Best Pedometer for Marathon Training?

Chad F

Hello all!

I have decided to run the 2011 Boston Marathon to raise awareness for veterans and my charity, Veteran's Gift. I have just started my training, and I need to start getting equipment to help me keep track of my goals. I have a pedometer application on my iPod for the interim, but I am looking for something that will be very accurate, so I can make sure I am following my training standards and schedule.

I am looking for a very good quality accelerometer-based pedometer for runners, GPS back-up even more helpful. Most of the reviews I have read from prominent sites are based on walkers.

If there are any marathon runners/trainers out there that favor a particular pedometer, please let me know. I am looking for the best accuracy and life, so it can go for the long run. Price isn't really an issue.

Answer
Get a Garmin Forerunner. It's a GPS enabled watch/computer that measures and records everying except your urine output. I knocked 10% off my time just because I had it.
The Forerunner functions include:
pace, average pace, time, distance, interval training, pace alerts, incline, bearing, calories, navigation (dot maps), clock time, sunset and sunrise times, etc. All of this can be downloaded to a computer for a work out analysis.
The Forerunner also has a cycling function that does similar thing if you are biking.
The Forerunner is not cheap, but it's worth it.

b/t/w, If you need lodging in Boston, check out Newbury Guest House. It's a great B & B.
Good luck!

Can I Get BBC Sport Multi Screen on FreeView?

Q. Weel I'm trying to get all the interative channels on freeview

atm I can get 301,302,305

but on a sky box there are a few extra interative channel I would like to watch on my free view.

on the bbc multi screen channels
1 - 301
2 - 302
3- I don;t get
4- I don;t get
5 I don;t get

is there any way I can get these extra channels

my freeview doesn;t give the option when I press red button on bbc one of sport multi screen only news multi screen which is 305

Answer
The other screens only show when there is additional sports going on. For example last week when the London Marathon was on you could watch the elite men's race, the elite woman's race and the masses of runners at different stages of the race. If you select the channels when there is nothing showing you would not see anything on there.

Which sports are women better at than men ?

Phil A

Just wondering ?
Het Cera, as I said I was just wondering.
Please read the whole question next time.
And by the way, I was talking about genders, not people.
You are the one who is weak and insecure if you attack and critisize people for no real reason.
But as this is the gender forum, I would like to say that you are in the minority. Most females are more caring and sensible and generally act nothing like you.
That's fine Cera, no need to delete your post. It was how you felt at the time and therfore valid.
No offence taken. I agree that many of the other posts were sexist and disgusting.

Answer
There wont be many physical sports women are better at.

There could be games that are considered sports that women might be better at...
Even then men would be better at most of them.

I honestly can't think of a single one off the top of my head than women are better at.

@ M-Just M
How can you compare men and women at Gymnastics? There's no criteria to compare the different sexes. Scores are only marked artistically against the other competitors which are the same sex.

It's like saying women are better at dancing than men... there's no way to prove it either way

@ Cera
Serena Williams the runner??? Firstly she is a tennis player and the main reason she is so successful is because she is built like a man which means she beats all the women she plays! Would she beat Federer or Nadal though... very unlikely.

*** edit *********
As per usual you get loads of thumbs down for telling the truth in this section. My mistake, women are equally as good at all sports as men. That's why so many people watch women's sports on TV!

What makes running a mile easier?

TaylorHotn

I'm 16 female, 280 pounds and trying to run. What makes running a miles easier?

Answer
The simplest way to make running a mile easier is just to run. Run, run and run. It's the only way you're going to be able to improve your stamina so that you can run faster without getting tired. The reason that you're feel so tired after your runs is because your body is out of shape, and when you're out of shape it really hurts to exercise. But here's the good news, anyone can be a good runner, you just have to be willing to put the work in so that you can build up your endurance. Endurance is the key to all running, it's the foundation for everything that you'll do whether it's long distance or short sprints, if you don't have endurance you're not going to be able to do either very well. I suggest that you start where you can, if you can only run 1 mile, than run 1 mile 4-5 times a week until it gets easy for you to do, then increase your distance to a full mile. Keep running that mile until it gets easier for you to do, start with what you can and allow your body to adjust and grow stronger. Remember you don't have to run fast, in fact you can run as slow as you want, just don't walk. Do this for a couple of weeks and you'll find that it's much easier for you to do, you won't have cramps or stitches, your legs will start feeling better and your times will be dropping. This is a sign that your endurance is starting to grow, at that point you can start upping your mileage and trying to drop your times.

Usually it takes about 6 weeks for your endurance to really build up and and for it to start having effects on your stamina and cardiovascular health. But I guarantee you'll start seeing results WAY before then, after only a couple weeks, of running 4-5 times a week, you'll start to notice that running a mile is much easier, cramps are much less frequent and that you're not nearly as winded. So by the time that you run the race at your school you should be able to drop your times substantially. But I cannot stress enough, the only way you're going to build up your endruance is through continued running. You can't run once a week and believe that you're going to be in good shape, you have to be out at least 3-4 times weekly.

Set a mileage goal for yourself, DON'T go by time. That way you have an actual goal instead of simply running until your time is up, it's much more motivating to be running a preset distance and it doesn't feel quite as long. Try using this website: http://www.mapmyrun.com/ Here you can map your runs and figure out where and how far you need to go, I find it's really helpful if you don't have a gps sport watch.

So, as for a training plan, your schedule could look a little something like this:
For the first month or so I would focus mainly on building endurance, the only way you're going to be able to do that is through running often. Don't feel like you have to go out and run three miles on your first day, you're the only person who knows your body and knows what it can and can't do. So for right now, do what you can, and start building up your strength. Then, when you feel like you're in better shape you can start upping your distances.

Monday: Distance run (1-3 miles as slow as you would like, without walking)
Tuesday: Distance run (1-3 miles as slow as you would like, without walking)
Wednesday: Distance run (1-3 miles as slow as you would like, without walking)
Thursday: Distance run (1-3 miles as slow as you would like, without walking)
Friday: Distance run (1-3 miles as slow as you would like, without walking)
Saturday: Rest or distance run
Sunday: Rest

If you follow this schedule for a couple of months you'll find that running 2 or 3 miles is not big deal at all, you won't have cramps, you won't run out of breath and you'll feel great. That said, the only way you're going to improve is to work hard and stay dedicated, running once a week is not going to build up your endurance. Stick with it and I think you'll be amazed at the results. I hope that helps, feel free to message me if you have anymore questions!

Need help for running?

Dakota

I have been running for awhile but im starting really serious about it and i have several questions. 1. What does it mean to increase 10% per week for running?
2. Is a foam roller important?
what should you be eating?
3.is owning a watch important?
4.when should i rest/or have recovery runs?
5.should i include hard workouts? If so can i please have some ideas
Also im a male 18yrs and have moderate health and my constant mile time is usually 6:40-7:00 if this helps. Thank you guys for helping me out:)

Answer
1. you need to limit yourself when increasing the mileage or amount of runs.
It is easy to feel really good and suddenly increase too much too fast and get injured.
2.the roller can bu useful in working out kinks in your muscles that you can not reach with your hands.
3. not really it can be helpful but lots of runners do not use a watch.
4. you should have a recovery day after a hard day, and rest days can be useful once or twice a week.
5. after you are used to running then you should stress yourself 2 to 3 days each week, just have an easy or off day after the hard days.
If your speed is 6:40 to 7:00 you are in pretty good shape.

Any running heart rate/gps watch suggestions?

Melissa

I do long road runs quite a bit and am looking into buying a gps watch. I used to have a polar heart rate monitor (ft4) but misplaced it. It was great for telling me the calories burned but I really need one that tells me distance and pace, too.

I was looking online last night and there are just SO many options. Polars versus Garmins versus Nike versus TomTom....

The features I want are:
-gps to tell me my distance/pace
-how many calories I burn (and visible during workout, not just after)
-decent battery since I run 20-40 miles per week
-weather proof since I run in rain/snow/extreme heat...

I do not need training plans, feedback, or anything like that...I just want it to be accurate and durable. Do you have any suggestions? Or any NOT to get? Even if I can eliminate some, that would be great! I loved my polar ft4, it just didn't have the gps features.

Answer
the Nike+ Sport Watch ( http://store.nike.com/nl/en_gb/pd/sportwatch-gps/pid-795756/pgid-560061 ) is simply great :)
i use mine mostly while biking (thus seriously interested in the newer TomTom one with multi sport support) but for running / biking the older Nike+ (with GPS technology from TomTom, including its quickfix data (whenever connected to the Computer (with Nike+ Connect installed) the GPS satellite positions for the next couple days are stored in the Watch's memory and when you want to start running the device finds the satellites quicker (i sometimes forget to do it again after not using the watch a few days & then the finding of satellites takes notably longer - VERY handy feature, certainly in freezing winter ;D))

otherwise the watch has all you are looking for including display of all the data (time, distance, pace and cal) at one glance (see 3rd pic).
it easily lasts several hours (not sure how quickly you get to 40 miles, but i can use it two days in a row without needing to recharge (the site advertises 8 hrs run per load, might be right - any USB plug (e.g. http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=-NTbO2GqT6YM4M&tbnid=2jaDYSeMCiJ1-M:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdoocoor.en.made-in-china.com%2Fproduct%2FsqzxoMbAbXrf%2FChina-USB-Travel-Charger-CW-CH7001-.html&ei=BXrAUouiJsTI0QXJxoHADw&psig=AFQjCNFPW1e-VhX_xf4NXCO-OuKyogHuLA&ust=1388432246883281 or of course at your computer) recharges it in about 2 hrs (from empty))

the TomTom watch is an evolution of the Nike+ / TomTom model with some added feature (for several sports like swimming, biking and so beside running) but for run / bike, the Nike+ is still perfectly fine
it is tight (50 m under water...)

& it connects (bluetooth?) to a heartbeat sensor & stores that as well - not sure it displays it while running as well however - but the Nike+ site is very handy for checking on your performances and progress :(or regress):

it also connects to a Nike sensor that you can put into your (Nike) shoes (one of them, obviously) to use it on a treadmill)

running watch with gps and heart rate?

john Kelly

I recently purchased a SOLEUS gps running watch. I am disappointed with the performance. The gps does not work even though I find myself standing in the same spot for over a half hour in 10 degree weather! Therefore, i am considering purchasing a Garmin. All I want is pace, chrono, distance, and a heart rate monitor. Am not interested in any other features. Prefer a easy to use model with nomimal setup time. Which model do you suggest? thanks

Answer
I have a Garmin 405 which is an older model but it has all of the features you mentioned. Its simple to use, and has youtube videos on how to operate it, if you need it. If I were you, knowing that you just need the basic, model have a look on a used online site for one. You may be able to get a good deal.

HELP! Hamster ran away!!!?

bandgeek37

My hamster Emma escaped last night while I was sleeping.

I need success stories

My bf and I put our hamster in a new home last night, its an 20-gal aquarium. we had to make a makeshift top of 3 lids. I don't even understand how she got out in the first place because nothing was moved on top and theres no way she could've squeezed through them... there wasn't much she could climb on to get high enough in it anyway. I don't understand how she got out, or where she could be.

The biggest problem is that I live in a 4 bedroom apartment and all my roommates went home for the summer so they're doors are locked. I honestly cant remember if my bedroom door was open or closed when I woke up... if it was closed she wouldn't have been able to get out because I have a rug under my door thats pretty tight to the bottom of the door. That being said too, if it was open she could have even got under the door to outside and could be anywhere in the apartment building.....

Help?

Answer
I have a success story for you. The first time my daughters hamster got out we thought for sure he was a gonner. Just like you, we were sure he could not get under the door, so we were certain that he was in the apartment and not in the porch that we shared with the neighbors upstairs. It was 2 days later and our cat was in the porch outside of our apartment and he was in the closet and was watching something closely. My daughter got a flashlight and there he was! OUTSIDE of the apartment. How he got to the other side of that door I will never know... and we have cats! He was making quite a little home out of the insulation too.

The second and last time he got out it is a better story. This to me is a HUGE sucess story. He got out and we kenneled the cats at night and put a shoebox upside down as a live trap... you know with water and food inside... All the hamster had to do was go in and bump of of the sticks. It didn't work. 2 days later we noticed that he had found his food under my daughters bed and was eating that and chewing things under there. We turned her bed upside down thinking that he would have made a nest inside the bed, but no. No sign of him again. 3 days. 4 days. Sure he found food, but a human can only go 48 hours or so without water, so a hamster surely can't go long. 5 days. I told my daughter that he was dead for sure. I kept smelling in each room, hoping to find his body before my 7 year old did. 6 days. The cats roaming around the house, no dead body smells. 7 days. I went into the storage room for some canned food and I glanced down at my feet, and there inside a foot tall box of our wires and old cords was this hamster. How he got up there I will never know. And none of the cords were chewed, so that is a bad sign cause hamster chew everything. I looked closely and he was alive! I picked him up and he was SO weak that he could not lift his head. He couldn't take one step in my hand either. He just laid there looking up at me and his whole head shaking with the effort. I called my daughter and I thought quick. His blood sugar would be low and he needs not water... but something with substinence. I grabbed some beef broth and heated it up and mixed sugar in it. He couldn't even drink! So I got a syringe that I had for the kids medicine and I dripped this into him. We did this every 2 minutes and didn't' want him to get ill from too much to fast. So after 15 mintues we did this every 10 mintues. Than every 20 minutes. Within 2 hours of being found this hamster could take a few wobbely steps! By the end of his day, he was in his cage and actually trying to eat! He lived out a good life. He drove 4 000 miles with us when we moved across the country. He recently died of old age. And that hamster knew that we saved his life. He was so tame and greeted us when we came into the room. He was a good little guy.

i need a 20 GIG MP3 player for under $100?

LU13

its an xmas present from my parents to myself.

dont want an IPOD, just need something easy, simple, durable

it is for the gym

i also dont want it to be HUGE, it can be big, or not as "small" as an IPOD, but not so goddam huge

dont mind buying off Ebay

i own over 10 gigs of music, and my old DELL mp3 player (aka the Dinosour) is dead. it died yesterday. funeral services tomorrow :(

Answer
Unfortunately, there's not much hope here...

Smaller (flash-based) players tend to go up to about 16GB - and you're still looking at $125-200 for one of these. Even a 4/8GB player will probably run you over $100.

For a Larger (Hard Drive-based) player - these typically start at around $150 and up for a 30GB model (there's very few between 16 and 30).

With your budget - the ONLY way of pulling this off is either something used (and/or a lucky find on eBay - but watch out for scams/knock-offs), or some cheap no-name piece of garbage.

Perhaps they could give you a Best Buy (or whatever store you prefer) Gift Card - and you can put it towards something decent ;);););)

Can anyone suggest a good shock-absorbing running shoe?

Eat F

Can anyone suggest a good shock-absorbing running shoe? My budget is around $100 or less

Answer
All running shoes made by top manufacturers will have plenty of shock absorbers. The most important thing is to get fitted into the right shoe. If you go to a specialty running store they should be able to watch you walk and determine whether you are a neutral runner, a pronator or a severe over pronator. After you distinguish what type of shoe you should wear, then pick one under that category that feels right.

With $100 you should be able to buy a top of the line shoe

Good Luck!

Bradman Fantasy Q:- Can Bradman keep this average under these circumstances to surpass Sachin?

DNTH

Here I am going to make a fair comparison between Sachin and Bradman to find out the best test batsman from Sir Bradman and (Sir) Bharath Rathnam Sachin.

These are the test international records of Bradman and Sachin

Bradman Mat Inns NO Runs Highest Average
âââââ__52_80__10__6996_334___99.94___
300 200 100 50 sixes
_2__12__29_13_6

Sachin Mat Inns N O. Runs Highest Average
ââââ_181_298_32__14965_248*_56.25____
300 200 100 50 sixes
_0__5___51_61_64

To keep this simple let's subtract the not out innings from the played innings of this two. Bcz when counting the average the not out innings will be ignored. Bradman (80-10= 70) Sachin (298-32=266)

Bradman has scored 6996 off 70 innings(out innings) and averaged 99.94
Sachin has scored 14965 off 266 innings(out innings) and averaged 56.25

Now it is unfair to compare a batsman who played 70 innings with some one who played 266. So let's level the play field. Let's imagine that Bradman will get an opportunity to play the same number of tests/innings Sachin has played. So he will have to play 129 more tests /196 more innings.
So to have a better record than Sachin, let's say Bradman have to score 1000 more runs(to have a better average than Sachin) and one more hundred and a fifty than Sachin after playing the same number of tests(181) and innings (266) as Sachin. In other words Bradman needs 15965(14965+1000) runs, 52 hundreds and 62 fifties. Plus 59 more sixes lolz! He dont need to score any more 200's or 300's bcz already he has scored more of them than Sachin. Got it?
Bradman has already scored 6996 runs of 70 innings. To have a better record and average than Sachin, Bradman needs to finish with 15965(14965+1000) runs in exact number of innings as Sachin (266). So he needs further 8969 runs in 196 innings.
So this is what exactly Bradman needs to finish with a step ahead of Sachin.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦
8969 runs more in 196 innings with an average of 8969/196 = "45.76"
23 more 100's and 48 more 50's. Plus 59 more 6's.
In Details >
Bradman
NEEDS> Inns Runs Average 100 50 sixes
âââââ196_8969_45.76_23_48_59

So he needs to keep an average of 45.76 in those 196 innings to go ahead of Sachin. Sounds easy eh?
But he have to face lot of obstacles and new circumstances in those 196 innings. The same obstacles Sachin had to meet. So here are the advantages and disadvantages he will have .

ââDisadvantages (plenty)

1) He will have to play the same number of ODis that Sachin has played and have to keep the same average (or more) as Sachin. Minimum 45.16 average in 453 ODIs with 95 50's and 48 100's (or more). This is bcz Sachin averaged 56.25 in tests while having such a great record in ODIs. So Bradman has to do the same to level the playfield.

2) No more 8 ball overs or no any test matches lasting more than 5 days which certainly favored the batsmen in Bradman's days..

3) Now Bradman have to play world's greatest bowlers like Akram, Murali, Waqar, Walsh, Pollock, Malinga, Vaas, Zaheer, Kumble and many more. Not just some one like Harrald Lawood.

4) Bowlers will bowl using all the tools such as reverse swing which Bradman has never accustomed to.

5) Now Bradman have to play all his 196 innings outside Australia and England. He have to play in West Indies, Subcontinent, South Africa and many other various locations. So no more home doctored or accustomed conditions like in England or in his home Australia where he played most of his matches.

6) Now with the latest technology the batsmen have more chance of getting out by LBWs, Run outs and other ways. And also his opposite bowlers can figure out any of his weaknesses using the modern technology.

7) Have to hit 59 more sixes which will increase the chances of getting out.

8) No more free time between games. Got his work cut out like Sachin. A sheer busy schedule.

9) More competition between teams which will make it so difficult than the era he played.

ââAdvantages (Few)

1) No more uncovered pitches and the batsman can use helmets plus other safety equipments.

2) No more body-line bowling or dangerous field settings.

3) Just one bouncer allowed in an over.

You can add few more to those lists I guess.

So you see that he will have to face lot of obstacles and will have very few advantages. So can he keep the average of 45.76 under those circumstances to surpass Sachin and have the better record?

This thing will never happen in reality. So this is just a fantasy and an opinion based question. So what's your opinion. Will Sir Don Bradman fail or will he pass the test??????

Read carefully, take your time and answer. This question will be opened for at least four more days.
@Lomax I said "not just some one like Larwood". I meant that Bradman has to play not just one great bowler. He has to play many great bowlers. Ofcoz Larwood was one of the greatest on his era. So that's why I mentioned his name.
WG Grace was just an after thought. The best batsmen who have played in the game are Sachin and Bradman. I dont think any of the others can be even counted it.
@Bill P. I am not saying the batting was so easy or I am not taking any thing away from Bradman's brilliance. What I am doing was just sorting out the facts. I think that Joeblow has added some more I have missed.
@Lomax :- http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/4188.html?class=1;template=results;type=batting
You see here that Bradman played 15 outta his 52 matches against India South Africa and West indies. Those 3 teams have just started their careers and were minnows those days. So that is similar to Sachin played some test matches against Bangaldesh and Zimbabwe. So it is fair.

Bradman averaged 140+ against those 3 minnow teams and 89 against England. Similar to Sachin who also averaged higher against minnows like Bangaldesh and Zim's

Answer
I think all heart rate monitors have chest straps unless I"m wrong. The new nike+ sportsband shows pace and distance. You can find it from the nikerunning.com store for $59. If you want a heart rate monitor, Timex, Garmin, Nike are some brands that sell nice heart rate monitors.

Hope that helps,

Any advice on running long distance?

Ivy

So the coach is putting me in 1600 meters and 2400 meters, I just want to ask if there is anything i can do to go faster and keep my pace up. I'm not used to breathing in to my nose and out from my mouth during running and I tend to breath from my mouth and out from my mouth. I just need any advice you people out there who has experienced running long distance.

Answer
Keep a steady pace, no matter how tempting it is to speed off with the group that pulls out first. Keep a watch on you and kinda try to monitor yourself and how fast you are going. If you keep steady paces (by this i mean running a 1:30 lap time for 4 laps or faster or slower depending on how in shape you are) I guarantee you will get a better time than if you exhaust yourself on lap one.

Best Running Watch with distance/heart rate monitor?

larkwood46

I am new to this type of running and need to be able to monitor my heart rate. Distance is important also and am not sure if GPS or Pedometer is best.

Answer
Garmin Forerunner 305. A pedometer is based on stride distance and this varies widely based on how tired you are you, weather or not you are running up or downhill, etc.

Is there any kind of device I can buy for ~$50 that will record the distance I run and my heart rate?

K-bo

I am looking for something like a watch or band or strap or anything that lets me know the total amount of miles I run and the heart rate (preferred, but not as important as the distance traveled). I am looking to spend no more than $50. Do you know any sites that have the product I am looking for, at the price I am looking for?

Answer
For about $30 you can get the Nike Sensor. It doesn't have the heart rate though. Track speed, distance, pace and calories.

How do people in New York city decorate their place?

RexD

Was wondering how they decorate their apartment or condo. What type of wall hangings and figurines do they buy? (I have seen in movies that some have catholic parafanalia on wall, also some have superman like in seinfeld.) I am wanting to make my apartment look like from new york city.

Answer
Ummmm...this isn't a cult. People who live here all have different ideas about decorating their places.

I, for one, would not have Catholic paraphernalia because...well...for one...I'm Jewish.

And these days, I mostly decorate in kid related mess, since I have two children. Oh, also our decorating style runs towards the "Early Book" style since I'm a teacher and my husband is a professor. (We have bookshelves all over the house, and there are books on almost every surface. Newspapers, too.)

But everyone is very different here. There is no one design aesthetic. You have been watching wayyyyy too much TV!

How old can a child be legally allowed to stay home alone in New York City?

How old can a child be legally allowed to stay home alone in Manhattan, New York?

Answer
It depends on the child due to their "special needs" or "emancipation" status.

You can read my article on "Living Alone in New York" for more info.
http://411newyork.org/guide/2008/12/01/living-alone-in-new-york/

Also, here is a check list from OCFS to determine if a/your child can be left alone.
http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/main/prevention/faqs.asp#supervision

If possible, become good friends with neighbors who has kids around the same age so you can alternate watching each other kids so if you have a emergency and have to run out, it will be a bit easier to rely on someone or look for a sitter near to you.

Hope I've helped.

How can my garmin 305 help me train for a sub 3hr marathon?

Daniel S

I know this watch has an abundance of features, but i fear im wasting them. For an example . . .if i go for a 5 mile run i want the watch to tell me if im on schedule for a sub 3hr finish? How do i do this?

Answer
Read the instructions, it is too much for someone to copy down here or to have the interest in copying it down since you can read how with the instruction. Look at working out with the virtual partner, you can set it up distance (5 miles) and time (34:20). It should show a pace of 6:52. In this mode it will show if you are ahead of behind pace and how far. You can also set pace alerts so that the watch chimes when you are off pace. It might even do some other things, I only have a 301. Good luck!

What are the differences between the Garmin Forerunner 210 and 405? And which is better?

Alex

I already know the price differences.
Thanks.

Answer
210
Take it Further

For runners who want more training capabilities, Forerunner 210 lets you create customized interval sessions and see your pace for each interval. If youâre using the 210 with the foot pod, you will later be able to see your cadence, or steps per minute, when you upload your data to Garmin Connect.

Follow Your Heart

Some versions of our Forerunner 210 come bundled with our premium soft strap heart rate monitor to display your heart rate in beats per minute. It has five heart rate zones, which you can customize based on your exact zones. You can also set up heart rate alerts to notify you when you are above or below your targets. Forerunner 210 provides heart rate-based calorie computations so you can more accurately track your calories burned.

Outdoors or In

We took the easy-to-use operations of the Forerunner 110 and added indoor capabilities, making the 210 the perfect sport watch for those who like options. For outdoor runs, Forerunner 210 uses GPS to accurately record your time, pace and distance. To track that same data at the gym, snap the foot pod¹ onto your shoe and youâre good to go. Using advanced accelerometer technology, the foot pod collects and sends precise data about your movements, gathering distance and speed data that is 98 percent accurate for most users, right out of the box.

For even more options, Forerunner 210 also works with certain indoor fitness equipment so you can track and store data from a treadmill run or an indoor cycling workout. This capability helps you bridge the gap between your indoor and outdoor fitness activities so you can continually track your progress. See a list of fitness facilities and compatible equipment.

Store, Analyze and Share

Whether youâre training for a race or launching a healthier lifestyle, youâll love the motivation that comes from reviewing your workouts online. Tracking your data is simple with Garmin Connectâ¢, our website for free data analysis and sharing. Just upload to Garmin Connect from your PC or Mac, then see the route you traveled on a map, view a summary of your workout data, create goals and more. For indoor activities when the GPS isnât in use, you wonât see mapping in Garmin Connect, but youâll still have a record of your workout data.

405
Watch Results

Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved. You even can download recorded courses to compete against previous workouts or race a Virtual Partner®. Customize Forerunnerâs data screens for instant feedback while you train.

Use with Ease

Sport watch and personal trainer, Forerunner 405 gives you the best of both worlds in a sleek, stylish package. This high performance watch is easy to use and comfortable to wear when not training. Simply tap the touch bezel to change screens without fumbling for a button. Forerunner 405 comes in 2 colors â black or green â to fit your style.

Run, Sync, Store and Share

Once youâve logged the miles, innovative ANT+⢠wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The dataâs just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect⢠or our optional Garmin Training Center® software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

Share Wirelessly

With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select âtransferâ to send your information to nearby units.

Track Heart Rate

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

Cross-Train

Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You also can add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

Lock Onto Satellite Signals

Forerunner 405 sports a unique design that gives the GPS antenna a better view of the sky, so it can get a stronger signal during your run. And its high-sensitivity GPS receiver provides improved tracking under trees and near tall buildings.

I just use a $30 heart rate monitor and a $10 cyclocomputer for cycling. The heart rate monitor can be used for swimming or running. The watch has a stop watch to time your activity.

The show features the following stars:
IU

Jiyeon (T-Ara)
Nicole (KARA)
Seo In Young
Lee Jin
Yoo In Na

Where can I download srt file of Korea' Running Man show?

ahem

I know I can download episodes with subs but those cant run on my player at home and the ones I download, which has no subs yet, runs perfectly fine. My whole family loves watching Running Man so please if anyone could help itll be much appreciated.

Answer
Only hardsubs are available for most episodes, through subbing groups like iSubs (http://isubs-squad.com ). I know that there are people who have somehow extracted an .srt from the embedded subs at Dramafever.com, but those are only for recent episodes (about 91-onward), and frankly, those subs are overly simplified and don't adequately capture the meaning of a lot of the dialogue and onscreen text.

Yes, I know it's not the answer you'd like to see, but it's the unfortunate truth. And I want to point out that I'm actually answering your question about .srt files, and not just posting links to other hardsub sites (who steal their content from the actual subbing groups anyway).

If the hardsubs won't play on your home media player, you might want to use a utility like Videora to convert it to a format that's compatible. It's time-consuming, but it's your best option.
