Have you ever been lost on a hunting or fishing trip? And if so, for how long? Were you rescued? Or did you find your own way out?

I admit I got lost a few times as a young man in some remote areas at night because it was overcast where I couldnât see any stars and I had no compass. But the next morning I was able to get my bearings and made it out.
The one time I knew where I was but had no idea which way to go was in my boat in the Lynn Canal north of Juneau. It was in a super thick fog, I mean I could only see maybe 6 feet in front of the boat. No compass, no GPS, no cell phone but I did have my marine band radio and my depth finder. Being one not to call the Coasties unless absolutely necessary, I just had to figure a way out. The boat had spun in circles as we pulled our halibut skate up, thus loosing sense of direction. Then it dawned on me; my depth finder. I pulled out my nautical map and looked at the fathom readings and how the bottom of the canal was shaped at our last known point. I then did a zig zag pattern with the boat until the bottom structure matched the map where we were. I then followed a drop off near shore up the canal at a very slow speed. 3 hours later the fog lifted and my companion was surprised we were indeed headed in the right direction. I must admit it was spooky motoring in such fog as we could not see a log or for that matter a barge or anything. And my friend rode up front on the bow watching for logs trusting me and that depth finder not to run aground on some rocks which could have killed both of us. Even if I sent a mayday that water was cold enough we would have died in our life jackets and no plane or chopper could have found us after the boat sank. I now have sonar with GPS onboard. But I left that old depth finder in for good luck. And itâs a darn good thing I had my tide book because when I shut off the motor and saw which way it was moving us by looking at the bottom I knew we were headed towards Haines on an incoming tide. Calm reasoning and deductions got us home.
