HELP! Hamster ran away!!!?

bandgeek37

My hamster Emma escaped last night while I was sleeping.

I need success stories

My bf and I put our hamster in a new home last night, its an 20-gal aquarium. we had to make a makeshift top of 3 lids. I don't even understand how she got out in the first place because nothing was moved on top and theres no way she could've squeezed through them... there wasn't much she could climb on to get high enough in it anyway. I don't understand how she got out, or where she could be.

The biggest problem is that I live in a 4 bedroom apartment and all my roommates went home for the summer so they're doors are locked. I honestly cant remember if my bedroom door was open or closed when I woke up... if it was closed she wouldn't have been able to get out because I have a rug under my door thats pretty tight to the bottom of the door. That being said too, if it was open she could have even got under the door to outside and could be anywhere in the apartment building.....

Help?

I have a success story for you. The first time my daughters hamster got out we thought for sure he was a gonner. Just like you, we were sure he could not get under the door, so we were certain that he was in the apartment and not in the porch that we shared with the neighbors upstairs. It was 2 days later and our cat was in the porch outside of our apartment and he was in the closet and was watching something closely. My daughter got a flashlight and there he was! OUTSIDE of the apartment. How he got to the other side of that door I will never know... and we have cats! He was making quite a little home out of the insulation too.

The second and last time he got out it is a better story. This to me is a HUGE sucess story. He got out and we kenneled the cats at night and put a shoebox upside down as a live trap... you know with water and food inside... All the hamster had to do was go in and bump of of the sticks. It didn't work. 2 days later we noticed that he had found his food under my daughters bed and was eating that and chewing things under there. We turned her bed upside down thinking that he would have made a nest inside the bed, but no. No sign of him again. 3 days. 4 days. Sure he found food, but a human can only go 48 hours or so without water, so a hamster surely can't go long. 5 days. I told my daughter that he was dead for sure. I kept smelling in each room, hoping to find his body before my 7 year old did. 6 days. The cats roaming around the house, no dead body smells. 7 days. I went into the storage room for some canned food and I glanced down at my feet, and there inside a foot tall box of our wires and old cords was this hamster. How he got up there I will never know. And none of the cords were chewed, so that is a bad sign cause hamster chew everything. I looked closely and he was alive! I picked him up and he was SO weak that he could not lift his head. He couldn't take one step in my hand either. He just laid there looking up at me and his whole head shaking with the effort. I called my daughter and I thought quick. His blood sugar would be low and he needs not water... but something with substinence. I grabbed some beef broth and heated it up and mixed sugar in it. He couldn't even drink! So I got a syringe that I had for the kids medicine and I dripped this into him. We did this every 2 minutes and didn't' want him to get ill from too much to fast. So after 15 mintues we did this every 10 mintues. Than every 20 minutes. Within 2 hours of being found this hamster could take a few wobbely steps! By the end of his day, he was in his cage and actually trying to eat! He lived out a good life. He drove 4 000 miles with us when we moved across the country. He recently died of old age. And that hamster knew that we saved his life. He was so tame and greeted us when we came into the room. He was a good little guy.

Answer
Unfortunately, there's not much hope here...

Smaller (flash-based) players tend to go up to about 16GB - and you're still looking at $125-200 for one of these. Even a 4/8GB player will probably run you over $100.

For a Larger (Hard Drive-based) player - these typically start at around $150 and up for a 30GB model (there's very few between 16 and 30).

With your budget - the ONLY way of pulling this off is either something used (and/or a lucky find on eBay - but watch out for scams/knock-offs), or some cheap no-name piece of garbage.

Perhaps they could give you a Best Buy (or whatever store you prefer) Gift Card - and you can put it towards something decent ;);););)
