what is the best way to sell a uncommon Lego Set on Ebay?

David T

I stumbled across an early Lego Duplo set (9004, Activity Rattles) in the box. The rattles themselves show up on ebay every now and then but never with the box. I doubt the box adds much value but then again some people are nuts.

If I run an auction then since it is so uncommon it isn't like people will be searching for it. Do I put it on with a high BIN?

Answer
Put a good description, and start at a pretty low price and watch the bids go crazy. Good Luck!

Is it a bad idea to buy a used iphone?

Derrick Q

I am considering buying an iphone for my g/f who has been wanting one for a while now. What kind of things do I need to watch out for? What is the difference between the 1st gen and 2g and 3g? My mom said that someone told her there is a 30 dollar a month fee just to use it or something? Where would be the best place to look for one ebay...craig's list? Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer
The first iPhone that came out will have a silver back, with a little black on the bottom. It runs on the EDGE network (whereas the 3G iPhone uses the 3G network).
The iPhone 3G also has built in GPS, and comes in either black or white. The white color is only available on the 16GB.
To use it as a phone you have to have a 2-year service agreement with AT&T. (Unless you can find one unlocked!) Check out AT&Ts website for their rates.
eBay is a pretty good place to look. I'd be careful about people selling that have stock photos instead of taking the time to photograph their item themselves, especially because of what you're trying to buy. As long as you feel comfortable with the listing and you think they've described the phone well, you should be okay. Watch for people selling a lot of iPhones. Doesn't always mean anything bad, but you never know!
Craig's List probably has some for sale, too, but I've never used it so I'm not much help either way on that part. Sorry!
It would almost definitely be cheaper to buy the iPhone from an Apple store or AT&T store since the price for the phone (with the 2 year contract) is a lot cheaper than what most people are selling them for on eBay. That's pretty much because if you don't want to sign a contract with AT&T you need an unlocked iPhone, and since Apple is no longer selling them on their website, there's not really another way to get one without walking into an authorized reseller and setting up a service plan.
You can find more info on the differences in the phones by checking this out : http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/en/2G3Gcomparison.pdf
Apple's website is good, and AT&Ts is, too.
Hope this helps! :)

How do I develop a proper distance running form?

running watches distance speed image

Matthew

New to distance running and running in general. I'd like to develop proper form in order to protect myself from injury and improve my speed. Specifically I'd like to know some good drills if there are any.

Answer
Great drills that you can do to help with your form and flexibility are warm-up drills that High School and Collegiate track athletes do. This not only warms you up but it increase your flexibility so that you can have a longer and more efficient stride length. It also starts muscle memory where you teach your legs exactly how to run properly. Great drills to start with are these:
Caricoca
Skipping A's
Skipping AA's
Skipping A' & B's
Skipping C's
Butt-Kicks
Walking Lunges
Bounds

Here is a great link that has a lot of the drills with it.

How much should i run each day for cross country?

latina gur

I'm 15 years old. I have never ran crosscountry, but im in good shape cause i play other sports. But i don't think im ready for crosscountry. Oh i want to run 2 miles in less than 15 min. So I need a workout. Thankyou bye!

Answer
If your in good shape, I'm going to recomend you start out running without any breaks for thirty minutes. You should do this at least four times a week. As you feel more comfortable with the distance, you can increase the number of days you run, how long you run(boost it to 45 minutes), or how fast or hard you run. This will give you the endurance you need to run cross country and the two mile.

The best way to get speed is through interval training. To do this, go to a highschool or college track, or any place you know exactly how far you're running. Bring a watch(watches are essintal for cross country) Warm up with two laps on the track, or 1/2 a mile. For the work out, run one lap(1/4 a mile) much faster than your workout speed, but not all out sprinting speed. Never sprint! You should be able to run the same speed the entire lap. Once you've finished the lap, note how fast you ran it, and unless you're faintingly exhausted, try to shoot for all your laps at that speed. Jog the same distance you ran(one lap) as a recovery. Then repeat the hard paced lap. Do this five times. This is the best way to build up distance speed, but don't overdo this. Only do this workout once a week, and if you think your getting injured, stop until you can diagnose the problem.

At the end of a week, you should have a long run. If you are running for thirty minutes, your long run should be fourty-five minutes. If your running for forty-five minutes, make the long run an hour. This run is essential for building endurance.

These workouts build the base of any great running program. Increase your intensity as you get more comfortable with them. If you start and they are to hard, slow down, but try to build up to them. Good luck with your cross country career!

Dawn

Can I have the address of it too? Also, can you recommend any places to go? I am arriving Perth at 7am tomorrow and have no plans. I have a car.

Answer
Spend a day in Fremantle, go to the Old Fremantle Markets (Friday - Sun), walk down High Road to the Maritime Museum Shipwreck Galleries (look at the Aboriginal Art Gallery), up to the Old Round House, down the left to the Fishing Harbour famous for its Fish and Chips.
You may also like to visit the New Maritime Museum actually in the harbour, they have a submarine you can explore. Fremantle Prison is good, but it takes a while to do the tours, the Fremantle History Museum, Samson House (Sundays only), Army Museum of WA, Village Art Market (Thursdays).

Look at the Fremantle walking trails http://www.fremantletrails.com.au/

Things to do in Perth City
Perth Mint, Stirling Gardens, the Art Gallery of WA, The Swan Bell Towers & Swan River foreshore, catch the ferry to the Perth Zoo.
Kings Park is huge, you can spend a morning walking about, then have lunch or take a picnic and eat overlooking Perth city and the Swan River.
Use the free CAT buses to get around central Perth and Fremantle

You can also have a cruise up the river for a day trip or just a quick trip or have a ride on the Perth Jet Boats.
http://www.experienceperth.com/en/Pages/â¦

Cottesloe Beach is not far from central Perth, on a fine day go for a walk on the beach, eat lunch or dinner and watch the sun go down over the ocean, or you may prefer to start at Hillary's Boat Harbour & AQWA , both very good.

Further out in Perth
Araluen Botanic Park is nice, especially in spring with the bulb display
Whiteman Park a family park with animal park, handicrafts, BBQ car museum.
The Maze is great for kids to run around, it is near the Swan Valley.

The Swan Valley, approx 40 min from Central Perth.
This is our wine/cheese area with lots of different places to stop and try things. It is also a historical town and area, with very early colonization, you need the day there, for kids look at Supa Golf
http://www.swanvalley.com.au/en/About+Swâ¦

Rottnest Island - Just off our coast, the beaches are fantastic and there is a bus that takes you around the island, or hire bikes.

Rockingham is a small coastal village, you can catch the train/bus down for a day trip. Try to go to Penguin Island, home of the fairy penguin, walk along the river foreshore and have a picnic lunch (lots of nearby takeaway) in the foreshore park.

New Norcia, Benedictine monk community a must if you can
http://www.experienceperth.com/en/Destinâ¦
Lancelin, calling in at Yanchep National Park
http://members.iinet.net.au/~yanhol/natiâ¦

Stay away for a few days
Then you can either travel up the coast to Kalbarri, stopping at some historical towns on the way, approx 6 hours by road, but much warmer in our winter, with beautiful gorges and walking trails. Stop at Cervantes on the way and see the Pinnacles
http://kalbarriedge.com.au/things-to-do/
or
Travel down south to Margaret River, also one of our major wine tourist areas, approx 3 hours away. You could also continue down to Albany 5 hours from Perth, and see the Beautiful forests.

Western Australian Visitor Centre is centrally located in the middle of Perth city, next to the post office. Stop in and see the friendly trained staff to get all the information and advice you need when you are planing what to do in the area.

The West Australian Visitor Centre is found at
Forrest Place - corner Wellington Street in Perth City.
If your accommodation is in central perth you will be able to walk their.
The centre is open seven days a week with information on accommodation, tours and transport and a free booking service for these products.

It's been a while since I have been to our international airport, but by memory they may have a stand with some brochures, but don't have a proper tourist information centre.

What does it mean to dream of escaping a hotel collapsing?

Danielle

I had a dream of being in a hotel room and I think my mum and my sister were around . I was in a fancy room on the top level. Then an earthquake happened the hotel was just about collapsing and it was on an angle. I was running up the angle to go find some stairs to run down and I saw some people get into an elevator to go down which wasnt wise. I then found this thing that was like an elevator- It was like a giant tube in the wall and you got in and it would take you down. It looked stable but the hole in the wall where it was was a bit high up for some reason so I just kept trying to find stairs. For some reason I feel like this hotel was in Los Angeles which is a place I want to live one day. I found stairs but I was desperately trying to find my mum and sister to come with me, and I was feeling scared for our lives- eventually they found me and we got out of the hotel and we found it was on water. It was floating on water, and I was watching it float away from the mainland, which felt like my hometown, Perth. I ran to the front which was grassy and watched as I felt this hotel just float- In the distance I saw more mainland so we must of been on a river, I would of thought the river here in Perth but I didnt see our tall buildings and city on the other side. I sat down on the front of the hotel on the grassy part and felt as we floated. I was sitting right on the edge and put my feet in the water and it took me a while to realise my feet were in the water, which was really clean and blue despite the rest of the water in the distance looking dark. It was night time by the way but we were lit by moonlight and starlight. Then I saw my dad and I was happy to see him, because my parents are divorced so I dont see him that often. He said that he saved the hotel and got it off the mainland and into the water to avoid more Earthquakes. I was basically crying that he saved us all and I was really grateful.

What does all this mean?? When I first woke up the first thought that came into my head was "that had a lot of meaning for you" .

Answer
Hi Danielle,

Let's see what you've got...

((Now, this is going to be kinda long, so, I'll try to shorten it where need))..

Dream opens by talking about the state you are in ("in a hotel room"). The "hotel" is the way you see yourself and describes one who is in a temporary place of residence. So it says, you wont be in this for long. It is a room you are in which is more concerned about appearances ("fancy room").

The earthquake you are talking about discusses something that has shaken your foundation, and that you are in a position of collapse, or you feel you may fall apart about some matter. Yet, there's an angle to this!

Dream says you may be searching a goal ("running up the angle") and you need to figure out what steps to take ("go find some stairs"). You may even be searching for an easy way to do it ("run down") either way, it is direction.

Dream also talks about your perspective ("I saw") of people who have gone the wrong way with this ("people get into elevator to go down which wasn't wise") rather, decisions made that may have taken someone down.

Elevators can go few directions {up, down, left, right, and in circles}. You said it resembled a tube in the wall. Perhaps, some are able to slide by? You mentioned that hole being high up... Perhaps, too, it affects those who are higher up. Not sure.

Certainly, the dream talks about your fears ("I was feeling scared-").

Something you may be looking for ("I was trying to find my mum and sister"). Mother is a nurturing aspect of ourselves, often, and sister is like a comrade.

Dream says this is something you are reflecting on your past ("eventually, the found me and we got out of the hotel"). Dream goes on to talk about your emotional wellbeing ("it was on water").

Whatever it pertains to, the dream talks about something that has left or is leaving your view ("I was watching it float away") and is no longer a part of your foundation ("from the mainland"). May be the past ("in the distance")

Grass indicates growth and positive things. Putting your feet in the water shows you are immersed emotionally in something. However, the dream says you are in a good emotional state ("water, which was really clean and blue"). Yet, there is a great deal of concern out there ("the rest of the water in the distance looking dark").

You are outside ("moonlight/starlight) which means this portion of the dream is talking about things going on around you. The "night time" sky indicates there are things which you are uncertain of. However, the "moonlight", which is a lesser light, offers some understanding to you of things you need to know, but very little in this area. The stars ("starlight") are like angels above us which act as guide and direction to knowledge.

Father is a figure of authority, here, something saved ("saved the hotel"). People often stay in hotels for about 2 weeks. so, length of time, here, will be a short stay. Something he may have done ("got it off the mainland and into the water") as to the reason you see it floating away. Apparently, there is a reason for all of this: "to avoid more earthquakes". These are the things that disrupt lives and cause the foundation of our life to be shaken, again, because this needs to be avoided.

The dream may be hinting that you agree that his taking something away and avoiding disrupting people's lives saved you from a lot of emotional pain ('basically crying that he saved us").

Why does my house get hotter AFTER sundown?

running watches soleus on More Soleus GPS watches now in stock! |
running watches soleus image

Red_F

I can watch the temp rise as soon as the sun goes down. After it gets cooler outside (under 72) I open some windows (one with a fan in it) on opposite sides/ends of the house and make sure the outflow is slightly larger than the inflow so I don't create a backpressure situation. It can be 60 outside and even with the fan on all night I still can't get the house under 70 degrees.

The house faces the West so I know it is getting baked.

Any options to cool it faster? I have a big fan and use it on high. Why does it get hotter once the sun gets off it?
I keep the shade drawn ALL the time and have good insulation plus siding and the house is white. I have plenty of insulation in the attic PLUS a fan that moves 1400 cfm and I only have a 800 sq ft home. I open the attic at night to draw the heat out while sucking in cool night air. I have planted some trees on both front and back but it will take years to get tall enough to do much.

I get home at 6 and it's 78 in the house but by 9 it's 84 So it heats up 6 degrees or so in the first 12 hours and then an additional 6+ degrees in the next 3 hours.

Answer
It's the heat that the walls and floor have absorbed all day and even heat that's under the house. When it gets cooler outside, the heat wants to transfer out into the cooler area. It travels through the walls by conduction then into the air by convection.

http://www.houleinsulation.com/images/appleagte_facts_1_large.jpg

A 78 to 84 degree rise from 6:00 to 9:00. If you can afford it, you should consider getting a 5000 BTU window AC. It will cost you about $150 and then ~15 cents an hour to run. I'm sure it will be worth it.

Does anyone know how to get rid of shin splints?

Q. Always at the begining season of track I get really bad shin splints. I do all of the stretches and variables your supposed to do to prevent them, but I still get them. I usually ice it too, and lately I've been taking Ibproufen so I can't feel them when I run. Does anyone know how to get rid of them or prevent them?

Answer
This is a really common question, especially among runners. Luckily, it can usually be treated with some simple exercises to strengthen your tibialis muscle.

First, a quick anatomy lesson so you can understand what's going on here.

Shinsplints are usually the product of an underdeveloped Tibialis Anterior -- which is just a fancy name for the muscle on the front of your shin.

http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/TibialisAnterior.html

This is the muscle that allows you to pull your toes up toward your knee -- it also comes into play when you are running or walking down hill. In many people, this muscle is out of balance with the stronger gastrocnemius and soleus muscles (which are to the rear of your calf), which tends to get a lot of exercise just by walking or running on even surfaces everyday.

This imbalance is probably what you are experiencing.

There is actually a really simple, but little known exercise that can strengthen the tibialis and pretty much banish shinsplints.

Here is a link to one variation, performed on top of a couple of plates:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/TibialisAnterior/DBReverseCalfRaise.html

You can accomplish the same thing by standing on a 2x4 or similar raised surface and, flexing at the ankles, pull your toes upward.

You can also perform this by placing a lightweight dumbell between your feet and flexing at the ankle. Go here to see a picture (you'll need to scroll down to the calves area):

http://health.yahoo.com/topic/fitness/healthyhabits/article/mens-health/5491

I'm a big fan of this exercise and have watched it work wonders for people with shin splints. Perform it one to two times a week, and work your weight up over time. Aim for 15-20 reps, 3 sets.

Best of luck!

Answer
Cashew Butter
Yield: Approximately 1 to 1-1/2 cups

2 tablespoons honey
1/3 cup walnut oil
2 cups roasted cashews
1/2 teaspoon salt

Place the honey in a microwave-safe container and heat in the microwave for 15 seconds. Remove from the microwave and add the oil to the container.

Place the nuts and salt in the bowl of a food processor and pulse for 5 seconds. Then, while the processor is running, very slowly drizzle in the honey and oil. Process until an emulsion is formed and the mixture is smooth; this will take approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute. If the mixture is too thick and doesn't spread easily, add a little more oil.

How many calories should I consume a day to lose weight?

Global Dom

I really need help I have been exercising frequently but not losing weight whatsoever and intact gaining more. I then realized I was not watching my calories. I'm a 15 year old male teen who weighs 205 lbs J exercise at least 3 times a week with walking combined with jogging and running for 30-35 minutes per days. Is this good and what should be my calorie intake if I want to lose weight at this rate

Answer
You need to start by working out your maintenance level of calories - how many calories you need per day to maintain your current body weight. To do that, you multiply tour weight in pounds by a number between 14 and 17. For your age and activity level, go with 16 (I won't go into the long and boring description of how to work that out). So, your calorie maintenance level is 205 x 16 = 3280 calories per day.

In order to lose weight, you need to create a calorific deficit, basically take in slightly less than your calorie maintenance level each day. The best way to do this is to drop the number by 20%. So, to lose weight, your daily calorie intake should now be 3280 - (3280 x 0.20) = 3280 - 656 = 2624 calories per day.

Just make sure you're eating the right things, don't eat too much meat (only about 200g per day) and try to stay away from processes foods and very sugary or fatty foods.
I hope this helps :)

What are the differences between the Garmin Forerunner 210 and 405? And which is better?

best garmin watch for running and cycling on Sports Watch with GPS | Garmin Forerunner 110
best garmin watch for running and cycling image

Alex

I already know the price differences.
Thanks.

Answer
210
Take it Further

For runners who want more training capabilities, Forerunner 210 lets you create customized interval sessions and see your pace for each interval. If youâre using the 210 with the foot pod, you will later be able to see your cadence, or steps per minute, when you upload your data to Garmin Connect.

Follow Your Heart

Some versions of our Forerunner 210 come bundled with our premium soft strap heart rate monitor to display your heart rate in beats per minute. It has five heart rate zones, which you can customize based on your exact zones. You can also set up heart rate alerts to notify you when you are above or below your targets. Forerunner 210 provides heart rate-based calorie computations so you can more accurately track your calories burned.

Outdoors or In

We took the easy-to-use operations of the Forerunner 110 and added indoor capabilities, making the 210 the perfect sport watch for those who like options. For outdoor runs, Forerunner 210 uses GPS to accurately record your time, pace and distance. To track that same data at the gym, snap the foot pod¹ onto your shoe and youâre good to go. Using advanced accelerometer technology, the foot pod collects and sends precise data about your movements, gathering distance and speed data that is 98 percent accurate for most users, right out of the box.

For even more options, Forerunner 210 also works with certain indoor fitness equipment so you can track and store data from a treadmill run or an indoor cycling workout. This capability helps you bridge the gap between your indoor and outdoor fitness activities so you can continually track your progress. See a list of fitness facilities and compatible equipment.

Store, Analyze and Share

Whether youâre training for a race or launching a healthier lifestyle, youâll love the motivation that comes from reviewing your workouts online. Tracking your data is simple with Garmin Connectâ¢, our website for free data analysis and sharing. Just upload to Garmin Connect from your PC or Mac, then see the route you traveled on a map, view a summary of your workout data, create goals and more. For indoor activities when the GPS isnât in use, you wonât see mapping in Garmin Connect, but youâll still have a record of your workout data.

405
Watch Results

Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved. You even can download recorded courses to compete against previous workouts or race a Virtual Partner®. Customize Forerunnerâs data screens for instant feedback while you train.

Use with Ease

Sport watch and personal trainer, Forerunner 405 gives you the best of both worlds in a sleek, stylish package. This high performance watch is easy to use and comfortable to wear when not training. Simply tap the touch bezel to change screens without fumbling for a button. Forerunner 405 comes in 2 colors â black or green â to fit your style.

Run, Sync, Store and Share

Once youâve logged the miles, innovative ANT+⢠wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The dataâs just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect⢠or our optional Garmin Training Center® software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

Share Wirelessly

With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select âtransferâ to send your information to nearby units.

Track Heart Rate

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

Cross-Train

Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You also can add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

Lock Onto Satellite Signals

Forerunner 405 sports a unique design that gives the GPS antenna a better view of the sky, so it can get a stronger signal during your run. And its high-sensitivity GPS receiver provides improved tracking under trees and near tall buildings.

Where can I buy a device that tells me how far I've ran in miles?

alyssa

I already have a pedometer but that's not what I'm looking for.

Answer
You can get a foot pod (that's basically just a pedometer) that goes with a HR monitor and calculates the distance based on your average stride length;

or you can buy a GPS watch like a Garmin forerunner;

or you can map your runs in Google earth, that's what I do.
Or you cycle your route and check the bike comp.

I'm an FT7 owner, and i don't see much difference between the FT40M and the one i have right now. How come the FT40M is a bit more expensive than RS300? I feel (for the look of the pics in the website) that the RS300 is more complete.
I'm interested in running; i really don't mind not having ALL the features a Polar heart rate monitor could offer.

Answer
I recommend neither.
I'm not a fan of HR training, especially for beginners. HR training is for those individuals who are very experienced and very educated on exercise and fitness. HR monitors aren't 100% correct and don't always work either, so you can't feel dependent on them. Once you have a lot of experience with training you will know what your HR is just by paying attention to your effort level for your body. I can guess my HR very accurately, so a HR monitor for me would be a huge waste of money (and mine was).
If you are interested in running, just go running. Why spend tons of money before you try out a sport for a while and know it's something you want to do and it's something you want to train seriously for? Especially because as a beginner you should be paying 100% attention to your body, not HR numbers.

Some people really enjoy HR training and there are many benefits to it. I personally just think that once you have experience you can HR train without a HR monitor because you will learn to feel where your HR is without having to be told by a device.

I see them as a waste of time and money because training based on milage and effort does the exact same thing HR training does.

I would spend a lot of time looking at reviews of each kind and see what consumers have to say about them. Some HR monitors are chest straps that require that they are wet to function. In my experience, these don't work (at least mine never has, but I have the worlds worst brand of GPS watch, Garmin).

What is the best GPS watch for a distance runner?

Beth Danne

During the summer, I want a good GPS watch to clock 5+ mile long runs with... I want a watch that can tell me my minute-per-mile pace, miles ran, and how long I am running for, but is still a fairly reasonable price ($100-$200). What is the best website to order a GPS watch from, or just the best watch?

Answer
I have a Garmin 305. Its old, and they don't make them anymore. but you can still find them at Overstock.com.
It has a heart rate monitor. there are all kinds of accessories for it, too. It has every feature that you could ever want. It can upload and download stuff from your computer - and although its old - its software is new.
However its bulky , and ugly, and slow to find satellites (easy workaround - turn it on before you start warming up).
Amazon is a pretty good place to shop around. and the reviews are worth reading. DCRainmaker has a great website and he does very good reviews and has a lot of side by side comparisons.

I'm pretty sure the least expensive GPS watch is the Timex Marathon. and it does everything you want.
Oh, by the way. All GPS watches can not give you an accurate instantaneous pace. Some of them can be connected to a foot pod that can help with that. Also you can hit the lap button and get your pace for that lap. But if all you need it for is the features you listed you might be better off with a pedometer. If you have an ipod, the nike + kit is only $25.

How are 2 running watches made for men and women different?

wildafroma

im looking online for some pedometer watches on amazon.com and i came across a certain one i want. but the price of the one i wanted jumped up and the same model is much cheaper. the thing is the one i wanted is male while the other cheaper one is female. whats the difference between the two besides the look

Answer
Women's watches are generally smaller, because women generally have smaller wrists than men. The women's watch could be cheaper because there are less materials in it (especially if it is made out of expensive metals), or possibly if there is simply less demand by women for this kind of watch. The actual mechanism of the watch should be the same.

How can I train my body to use it's fat stores for energy?

what is the best watch for marathon runners on ... Nike Sport Watch GPS - A Game Changer for Runners - MyRun Running Tips
what is the best watch for marathon runners image

Ariel

I've been a marathon runner for a long time. Recently my weight has blocked my performance. I've gone from 137 to 180lbs in just 2 years. I'm only 5'4 and this weight is really causing havoc.
I don't know if I can attribute it to my diet. I'm a celiac. I can't have any dairy products either. I've been this way since birth. I eat pretty much vegan.
What the heck is going on? How can I get my body back to where it needs to be. I'm only 19! Way to young to be at an athletic stand still...

Answer
So a couple questions:
Were you recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease, like within the last year or two?
Do you eat a lot of GF grains?
Do you eat a lot of processed GF foods?

1. If you have had Celiac Disease for a long time, there is one possible 'bad' thing about getting the disease under control. Your body has learned to cope with fewer nutrients, calories, etc... in your diet. Basically, it was in starvation mode, where everything burns a bit more efficiently and your body is quicker to put certain foods into fat. So for some of us Celiacs, when we go gluten free, all of a sudden our bodies are getting the calories they should have, but they are packing it all away to keep us from starving to death in the famine that our bodies have been trained to expect.

The famine was just the disease, in reality, but our bodies still act like they need to survive it and it can make it very hard not to gain weight in that situation. To my knowledge, doctors don't know how long this 'starvation mode' can last. Some thing it just lasts a few years, some think it may never go away. So exercising significantly more and watching calories may be necessary, but I'd try the exercise more.

2. If you eat a lot of GF grains, you should know that these have a higher chance of being contaminated by gluten. A pilot study on GF grains and sub. flours found that 7 of 22 had above the gluten free limit in contamination. One soy flour, for example, had over 100 times the amount of gluten allowed in GF food. Some Celiacs I know will start to gain weight if they are getting low levels of gluten contamination (I'm one of them. I'll gain like 10 pounds in a couple weeks from this!) and it only drops once they eliminate the contamination. So many of us drop the GF grains for a while and see how it goes.

3. Same issue goes for processed GF food - it is more likely to be gluten contamination than purer foods like fruits, veggies, and so on. Beans and nuts have to be carefully sourced because they are often processed with wheat, and the label to warn consumers of this is voluntary, not mandatory, so you have to call up a company to find out for certain if their beans or nuts are safely processed for you.

4. Add to this, carbs are the main things that the liver will make into fat stores if you eat a lot at one time, so if you ARE eating a lot of GF grains, that could be adding to it.

I don't know that these are the issues you have, but these are the ones that I've run across with the celiacs in my own family (there are 4) or those I am in contact with. Wishing you good luck. I hope that you can find a resolution to this.

Oh, one last thing? It wouldn't hurt to keep a food journal for a few weeks and work out how many calories you're having daily. If you are having more than is needed to maintain your weight, that's an easy answer. But if you are eating less than you need to maintain your weight, then that's a good sign that something else is going on, you know?

How can I get motivated to run?

Morta

My mom is a marathon runner and I always run 5K's and 10K's without really training for them. I really want to improve my time, but I'm just not motivated to get on the treadmill and run. I'm Home Schooled so I have plenty of time, but I just don't! I could run in the early morning or in the afternoon (Mom runs in the late morning), but I just don't have the motivation to do it. Do you know and tricks to getting motivated? Thanks in advance. Oh, and no mean comments please.

Answer
A lot of motivation comes down to self discipline. It won't be easy right away but there are some steps you can take like: scheduling a set time at least 4 days a week to run. By pre-setting a time and distance to go running you trick yourself into believing that you must follow your schedule.

Another thing is to have your workout clothes, shoes, watch, ipod, etc ready. Pull out your running stuff before you go to bed to have it ready in one place so that you have no excuse NOT to go for a quick run.

Maybe try to go out for a run at the same time your mom does, having someone to hold you accountable helps.

Once you have your routine mapped out it gets a lot easier. Best of luck and stay disciplined!

Is it normal to weigh 130 lbs at 16 for a girl?

Ugh..I feel extremely just fat in my stomach area. I weighed myself today and I'm 130lbs flat. I stopped softball and I'm not running and working out and I don't want to let myself go because summer is almost here anyway. I really want to tighten my core a little bit. Any tips?
I'd say my height is about 4'11 possibly.

Answer
You need to cut out processed foods like breads (anything made from white flour including pasta) and raw cane sugar(all sweets). These foods makes us fat and leave us hungry for more. No fast food, junk food, soda pop, ketchup, mayo etc...It's hard the first week and then you won't even crave junk food plus you'll feel so much better & energetic.
Eat fish, chicken, tuna, brown rice (1 cup) w/ veggies & salads. (salad dressing should be 1 tbsp olive oil w/ vinegar or fresh lemon squeezed) a bit of salt & pepper.
Eat fruits. Snack on carrots, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, & grn apples. Make fresh fruit juice instead of the ones at the grocery store. Make veggie juices too...they are so good & healthy. You can google for veggie juice recipes.
If you feel like having a nut have some almonds (15 of them) or walnuts (15 halves) or 1/4 c. of sunflower seeds. You have to watch the portions bc if you eat too much it turns to fat.

Exercise: Cardio like jogging, swim laps, fast pace walk, dance classes, running up & down the stairs, jump rope, volleyball whatever you like the best 5 xs a week 30-45 min.
www.sparkpeople.com has a calorie counter, fitness tracker & exercise videos you may like this site.

Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily
Take a multi-vitamin daily
"Prepare" meals ahead of time so you'll always have healthy meals prepared. You WILL lose weight/fat if you "commit" to this.

P.S. I heard great reviews on the book "The Fat Smash Diet" by Ian King. It's a strict diet & cardio but really good. You may find it at the library if interested.

How do I know how much a mile is?

how yer do

Okay I want to run a mile how do I know if I have run a mile or not or 2 or 3 or 4 or maybe even 5? Do I tell by time?

Thanks!

Only serious answers this is a real question!

Answer
Several different ways.....

1.) Drive a car through the course you wish to take prior to running it. Use the car's mile counter (I forget what it is called) to determine the length and run it.

2.) In Cross Country, we learn to determine how fast our pace is... whether we a running at a pace of 6 mins a mile or 8. From there we just figure out that if we've been running for 24 mins at an 8 minute pace, we've run 3 miles.

3.) Buy a stepcounter thing (can't remember what that is called either). They tell you how much youve run by multiplying the steps youve taken by your avg. distance per step.

4.) Buy a GPS watch. They tell how far you have travelled.

5.) Run on a track. They all have a set # of laps that equal a mile. For example if 1 lap is 1/5 of a mile, then in 5 laps youve ran a mile.

You can either measure your route, your speed, or just your distance traveled. To measure your route take a map & trace it out with a piece of string, then measure the string against the scale. If you were running only on roads, you can do this with Google maps or Microsoft Streets and Trips, etc. You can also run around a track of known length and count how many times you do so. If you don't have an official track, you can measure a route out with a car odometer or by pacing it out.

If you want to measure your speed you will need to have a route that you know the length of. Run it a few times and time how long it takes. Use that to determine your speed. This is only approximate.

Your other option that lets you take different routes all the time is to get a pedometer. There are generally instructions that come with them on how to calibrate them, and then it will automatically measure how far you went based on how many steps you've taken, and how long your steps are.

Is walking with ankle weights a good way to tone legs and butt?

best watch for running 2013 image

Loving_me1

I am planning a trip to Hawaii and want to get into a two piece by Feb 11 2013. What can I do to make this happen? I am 5â11 Weight 185 I want to gain 10 pounds muscle and tone body. I just start walking on Monday with five pound ankle weights on ea leg for 30 mins. How many days per week should I walk? What other exercise can I do to help me?

Thank you for your help!

Answer
Ugh, I hate the word "toned" because so many people use it in the wrong context. The look you are trying to achieve is simply lean muscle mass and low body fat %. For lean muscle mass you need to tax the muscles through heavy resistance training and let them repair. You can't target fat loss either, so you have to lose fat all over your body to lose fat where you want.

Walking with 5 pound ankle weights is going to have very little impact on your overall physique. Running won't even help you much. You need to lift heavy weights. If you really want to "tone" your legs and butt there are three (four if you want to hit your calves hard) exercises that you should focus on. I am giving you exercises to work on that, but you shouldn't neglect upper body if you truly want to maximize lean muscle mass and fat burn.

1) Squats - I Prefer low bar to high bar. Go to youtube and search for "Rippetoe low bar squat." Make sure you find a form video.
2) Deadlifts - This will hit almost every single muscle in your body. When performed properly it will really work your glutes, hamstrings, quads, traps, almost every muscle. once again, youtube a video on "How To Deadlift".
3) Barbell Lunges - a great complimentary leg exercise that will also target your core since you have to maintain your balance. Once again, hit up youtube. (Barbell Step-Ups are also similiar)
4) Standing Barbell Calf Raises - This is Isolation work and may not be needed. Especially if you wear high heels often.

No offense, but don't do "Barbie weights." Lift heavy. Use barbells. Within a few weeks of practicing form and after a couple warm-ups, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to squat at least 50% of your body weight and deadlift 65% of your body weight 5-6 times .

If you don't have access to heavy weights you will need to do the body weight versions. To get the most effectiveness out of this, you will need to have minimal down-time between sets and focus on more explosiveness. I would also incorporate burpees and push-ups if you have to go with the bodyweight versions.

Watch your diet and you should be able to reach your goal in two months. You can't outrun or outlift a bad diet! Don't fall for gimmicks and fads and hopefully you will stick with it after February as well.

Good Luck!!

How much money would I need to spend in Dubai and Abu Dhabi per day?

Lily

I am planning to travel to the United Arab Emirates January 2013. Can someone who has traveled to that country give me any useful information that I should know before leaving such as: weather, cost of food, local transportation/within country, recommendations on cheap and decent hotels??? Thank you!!!

Answer
How much money you would need to spend in Dubai and Abu Dhabi per day will depend on your activities only.
The weather will be pleasant (cold for me). It's what you may call T-Shirt weather. But bring a light jacket along with you because at sitting outside, especially in the evening can get a bit cold.
Renting a car isn't necessary as long as you don't want to tour through the whole UAE. In Abu Dhabi you can reach every destination easily by cab or bus.
Because beach vacations are out of question in January, you may get a hotel downtown. I can recommend the Novotel and the Christal. Both are located in the middel ot the city and every wanted destination can be reached easily. Alternatively you may look for any promotions of other hotels online.
You have the option to dine at any food court of a mall or in a restaurant. Restaurants which are authorized to serve alcohol are more expensive compared to others. You'll find all kind of cusine and many times all you can eat lunch/dinner buffets for a fixed price. Dining prices in 5 star hotels can be compared with prices in any western 5 star hotels. Don't miss eating Arabic cusine which will be cheap and tasty. A dinner buffet a Al Maha Rotana for example can be joined for AED 70 already (closed to the mentioned hotels).
The cab fare from a hotel to any mall or souq will be around AED 10-AED 20 incl. tips depending where you go. Bus fares are AED 1 per one way only.
A sighseeging tour by the Big Bus is AED 250 for a whole day. You can leave the bus any time and jump back on it if you want to. It comes around certain destinations hourly (same for Dubai).
Places to visit in Abu Dhabi are: the Grand Mosque, the malls, the souqs, Emirates Palace, Yas Island, heritage village, etc.
A trip to Dubai by bus will cost AED 25 for one way only. In Dubai you have the choice to travel by cab, bus or metro depending where you want to go. Places to visit in Dubai please check out online. To many to mention them all. But - Bastakyia and Dubai mall should be on your agenda like also the Gold and spice souq.
Regarding food prices - same applies to Dubai what I said about Abu Dhabi. At "tourist" places and hotels you'll pay a much higher price than at any local restaurant.

When riding in a cab, as a woman you'll sit in the back. Have small notes on you to avoid an agruement about change and watch that the meter is running. Some cab drivers like to take advantage of "stupid" (from their view) tourists. Also the cab fare from Abu Dhabi Airport to any destination in Abu Dhabi is for a fixed price of AED 75. In a bus ladies are sitting in the front only.

When taking pictures, especially of women, please ask in advance. Consumption of alcohol is allowed but falling around in public while drunk can get you in trouble.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

I'm asking because I've watched distance runners and their shoulders are still but there arms are pumping and when i run i experience soreness in my shoulders.

Answer
u have to be able to relax them, and that means getting enough muscle to support itself. that's why u get sore. just keep working them, and also maybe ur form could be off. good luck!! :)

Why do the xc runners kick up their legs so high when they run?

Q. I started xc yesterday and my legs are killing me (they started hurting previously because I started running a few weeks ago). As I watched the other runners on my team, the kick their legs up almost to where they are touching their butts. I tried and it eased some of the pain but I got tired quicker. Why do they do this? Should this be done only during training?

Answer
Your leg motion depends on the speed you are running. If you look at sprinters they are basically kicking themselves in the rear. When you bring your leg forward and the knee is bent it makes the lever shorter so you can have a faster return. If the leg is straight then the lever is much longer and takes more time and effort to bring the leg forward into the touch down position. Your legs are sore because you are not conditioned to running fast. It is a matter of getting your muscles used to running and the exercise. Don't worry about kicking yourself just run relaxed what you do should be a natural motion. Your foot should impact the ground only slightly in front of you coming rearward at the same speed you are moving forward. Running is a pushing motion not a pulling motion. If you contact the ground too far ahead it will tire out your quads very fast. Stand up straight relax your shoulders and arms, keep your elbows at 90 degrees and swing your arms straight front to back, not across your body. Do not let your elbows come out to the side they should be below your shoulders. It is important to be relaxed when running. Your stride length and motion will change as your speed changes.

Why do Americans like to Watch HandEgg, what is this SuperBowl?

Q. I see Americans love to watch the sport HandEgg, its apparently their favourite sport in the US. This Superbowl thing also seems to be very popular there. Can someone explain to me why Handegg is so popular and what this Handegg sport has to do with Superbowl?

Answer
Don't you worry. We all know that soccer (football) is such a superior sport.

You and the rest of the world can continue to watch those pony tailed laden pretty boys sashay their way across a pitch, only to go down in a heap as though they've just been shot, when an opposing player breathes on them wrong.

Such a beautiful game, even when it's 0-0, because it was all about the beauty of the game, when no one did anything and neither team scored, and no one won. They tied because neither did anything, and it's so beautiful.

Pretty boy passes to wanna be pretty boy, who passes it to wuss boy, who goes down in a heap and writhes around after another player from another team came within 10 feet of him. He gets up, looks at super hot, brain dead girlfriend in the stands (I believe they're called WAGS, yeah, they're just as useless in the U.S. as they are where you're at), realizes he wants to play on, and fake hobbles over to the sidelines, gets his makeup on, then goes out again.

And they prance and run all over the field, and it's so beautiful. And nothing happens. And it's so exciting. And depending on who wins, the fans riot afterwords. Even if no one wins, as ties are common. There we go again!

South Africa, here we come!

If I'm 13 where should I be in Soccer If i wanna make it pro?

Sobota

I've been playing soccer for 7 years. I've been playing select for 2 years. I just found out today my select team has folded. I wanna play higher level now, so what leagues or teams are there. I have heard of ODP. Also heard of Development Academy ran by US Soccer, but I dont think im old enough. Just give me some tips on teams. Also since I dont have a team I need to keep in shape so info on camps or training sessions would be nice.

I live in Dallas, TX.

Answer
Hello Sobota,

FC Dallas, a major team do offer open tryouts for outh. If you attend and make it, you could turn pro.

This list will help you with your game and help you keep fit.
-Eat healthily- The food you eat can influence your sprint speed, concentration and reaction time, all of which are vitally important to a footballer. A healthy diet rich in carbohydrates will benefit your game.

-Sleep well- Great things cannot be achieved without getting
The basics correct, furthermore a professional player can be made to look like an amateur if insufficient sleep is acquired. Insufficient sleep will lead to poor alertness lapses in concentration and make you vulnerable to schoolboy errors. Players whom are not as talented as you may look better than you on the pitch.

-Eat breakfast before playing- Breakfast will provide you with energy and increase your stamina. If you fail to eat it you may tire quickly.

-Ensure that you are hydrated while playing/ practising- If you play being dehydrated or tired, you will not be playing to the best of your ability.

-Practise often- Without this you will go nowhere. It allows you to identify weak points and naturally gradually improve your game.

-Join a club- Those who do not play at a club level are unlikely to ever make it, no matter how talented they are. Talent scouts from big teams also often watch amateur games in search of new talent. Many footballers who you see on television made it because of this.

-Have sportsmanship while playing- If a coach or talent scout sees a badly behaved player, they may not considered for selection no matter how gifted they are.

-Take coach advice seriously- In most cases coaches know more than you and have more experience than you. Taking their advice seriously will benefit your game and team performances.

-Stay fit- This is a must. You can do so by jogging, running, swimming, gymming etc.during your spare time. Your fitness levels influence your game tremendously. Fitter folk boast superior flexibility, stamina, sprint speed, reaction times and power than their non- fit counterparts in most cases. Those qualities being good are essential for footballers.

-Donât take negative critism seriously- Every club player, whether amateur or professional experiences negative critism at some point. Nasty folk often refer to them using vulgarity forgetting that they are only humans. Sadly many players especially amateurs feel demotivated or angry after this and quit the sport. If this happens to you remain calm and think to yourself âIll prove this person wrong next time aroundâ. Donât take it seriously, it could dampen your spirits and affect your game.

-Have a positive mindset always- People with a positive mindset are more likely to achieve their goals than those who do not. The same applies in football. A negative approach will do no good whatsoever.

-Watch live matches on television- This will broaden your knowledge of the game the game as a whole. By watching the pros do their thing, you might also learn a few tactics or moves in the process.

-Never criticize a team mate- No matter what type of error is made, a team mate should never be criticised. Doing so will only ruin friendships, sink confidence and cause conflict. It is also poor sportsmanship.
Ensure that you warm up before practising or playing. That is a must.

All the best

Is it wise to use a treadmill to increase my pace?

running watches that track pace on Virtual Pacer keeps you on pace during your workout
running watches that track pace image

Joesph

My running comfortable pace is about 8:30 per mile. I want to run at a pace of 8 mph. Would a treadmill be sufficient of helping me attain the pace versus running outside?

Answer
The general consensus is that if you want to train on a treadmill you should set a 1% incline to compensate for the lack of wind resistance, minor elevation changes, and other factors that you would otherwise experience while outdoors.

Treadmills are great when when weather conditions aren't best outdoors, but ideally you should be training on the terrain you want to achieve your pace at. Variations in elevation, turns, changes in stride, dodging other runners/obstacles help you to develop your core and give the muscles you use for running a better balance.

To track your progress, consider purchasing a digital pedometer like the Nike+ system, or a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch if your budget allows.

Will running on a cruise ship's track with my gps watch mess up the distance?

j157330

Hi, I am going on a cruise soon and was wondering if when I run on the track that is on the cruise, will the distance and pace results of my Garmin Forerunner 450 (gps running watch) be messed up because of the ship's motion?

Answer
Although I don't have such a watch, I'm quite sure the answer is yes. GPS determines the longitude and latitude and calculates distance, speed, etc from that. Your cruise ship should have a sign on the walking deck that states how far one lap is.
