recommended running watches?

Krist

Im looking to purchase a running watch. i've gone online and im spoilt for choice. the basic functions i need is for the watch to track the distance i've covered, stopwatch, etc.

are there watches out there that monitor the heart rate without me having to wear the heart rate monitor across my chest?

any recommendations?

Answer
You probably won't like my recommendation, but I'll give it anyway.

Measure your distance by other means - Google earth, mapmyrun.com, or drive it in a car.

Check your heart rate by hand at the end of your run (before the cool down).

Buy an $8 Wal-mart watch, with a cloth band. It will only have time, stopwatch, and alarm functions. But it will last a long time. They are durable, able to withstand you sweating in it daily and even showering in it afterward to wash the sweat out of the band. If something happens to damage it or the battery dies, then it will cost you $8 to replace. What will a repair or battery replacement cost for the fancier ones? I've used many of these over the years. The battery generally lasts more than 2 years, the watch itself is very rugged, and the canvas bands are very comfortable.

At what pace should a beginning runner start out by running?

Q. I read something about everyone being able to run for 30minutes, as long as they go slowly enough.

I barely seem to manage a minute and a half because I get so ridiculously out of breath.

Am I going too quickly? How can I actually measure my pace (I have no way of telling what my pace is or what distance I've run) - could you give me any kind of indication as to how fast I should be running? Was this information true? If so, how can I begin running for longer?

Thanks (:

Answer
There's a couple ways to measure your pace-- one, you can get in the car and drive out a mile. When you run it, see what time it is when you hit the mile marker--that's your pace. Or, if you want, you can buy a watch that will automatically tell you your pace, GPS coordinates, and mileage. However, I wouldn't opt for option two unless money is absolutely nothing to you (they can be pretty expensive), wait until you've been running for a year or two.

As for what pace you should be running, it's really up to you. Everyone is different, there is no standard beginners pace. What I would do if I were you, and this is what I did when I was in a freshman in high school starting cross country, is run half a mile without stopping, have a quick water break, and then run half a mile back. When that becomes comfortable for you, increase it to one mile out, one mile back. Gradually increase your mileage week by week.

I'm gonna give you a heads up, the first year of running is pretty rough. Expect lots of cramping, side stitches, weird aches and pains, and seemingly near-death situations. Just push through it, you'll have days when you think you're just not built to be a runner, but I promise that's not the case. After that first year, something just clicks, and running becomes much easier, and much more enjoyable. Stick with it, I promise it's worth it....

Also, sign up for some 5K races to keep you motivated. Follow a training regimen. Do speed works.

A few tips I have from my experience running cross country and track in high school:
-For the first year at least, don't eat anything less than 2 hours before you run. Once you become more experienced, this rule becomes a little lax (I've been running routinely for five years, and I can get away with eating right before now), but in the meantime, follow this rule like it's scripture.
-Drink lots of water. When you think you've had enough, drink one more cup.
-Take it easy on the fried foods
-Soda is the enemy
-Follow the weather: in the summer, run at sunrise/sunset; in the winter, run when the sun's out
-Run with a friend who is slightly faster than you, and is a hard worker. When it's 5am in the morning and your alarm goes off, it's easy to think, "Hey, you know what? I don't REALLY need to run... I'll do a lot of walking today...like from the parking lot to the building.... that counts, right?" But when there is another person out there, stretching while waiting for you, you'll get outta bed and show up.
-Do core workouts (crunches, planks, etc...); it improves your running so much it's not even funny
-Unless you're a marathoner, you don't need to go crazy with the whole pasta and carb-loading thing.
-Run on soft surfaces (ie grass, dirt). Stay away from concrete, it leads to injury.
-Stretch before and after running, even if you think it makes you feel like a noodle like I do. Just do it.
-Focus on your breathing at first. What I do is this, and it's worked pretty well for me: Breathe in through your nose for two seconds, out through your mouth for one second. Repeat. After a week or two, you won't notice you're doing it anymore.

Well, I think that's it! Hope I helped!

What is the best way to track my distance while I run?

ibrakefor_

I am training for my first half marathon (my first long distance race) and I would like to know how I can keep track of my mileage (and better yet: my pace as well) as I am running. I am relatively new to where I live so I am not super familiar with the best places to run or what not. When I run I like to be able to check time and distance as I go as opposed to waiting till after I finish my run. Any suggestions? Also, I am a college student so I dont have tons of money.
Thanks!

Answer
The only way to do what you describe is get a watch with a GPS tracking device. I recommend a Garmin. You don't need the latest model, a 301 works fine for my purposes, it even has a virtual assistant that lets you know if you are ahead or behind the pace you want to maintain. It will give you your time, the distance in metric or English, your pace while you are running and your average pace at the end of your run and the fastest pace your were running at, your average pulse and the highest pulse you had during your run. It does more stuff too. Amazon has some for about $125.

I'm looking for something to that keeps track of my running speed and distance...?

I'm looking for something to that keeps track of my running speed and distance. Maybe a watch or foot pod. Something that keeps track on my distance and speed. I should be able to connect it to my PC via USB and maybe comes with software and lets me see progress or past date data. Looking to spend no more than $100. Perhaps maybe a GPS devices that records my data and lets me access it on the web. I need someone accurate as I am preparing for the Army Ranger!

Answer
Ok, ranger, If you already have an iPod nano, iPod touch, or an iPhone, the answer is easy. A nike + sensor. If you have a nano you also need the receiver. You don' t have to use nike shoes. You can buy a little pouch or do it your self. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbjB0qp1ioM
It's not that accurate - but no foot pods are. but it can be calibrated. I've gotten mine to as low as 2% error. but 5% is more like the average.
The only GPS watch that I know of that's under a hundred is the Timex Marathon. But look for a Garmin in Craig's list or eBay. the 305 is a little dated and it will be a little slow to find satellites but has every feature you'll ever need (including a HRM) and lots of accessories. the 405 is a newer and faster and you might be able to get a good deal on one.
I think Nike has the best web site. But Garmin's is very good. I don't know what kind timex has.
GPS will give you more accurate results for distance. Foot pods will give you a more accurate speed and they work indoors. Oh and nano's will play music, too.

What is the best running watch?

Matt

I am in high school and I am looking for a cheap running watch that will do the trick. All I really need is a stop watch, although I don't want a regular stopwatch because it cannot go on your wrist and is a pain to run with. The extra features are not necessary and I'd preferably like it less then a hundred dollars although if its really good I would be willing to go a little over. Any recommendation would be great!

Thanks and God Bless

Answer
You don't need to spend more than 20!
Best running watch for under 100 is also under 20
Casio Men's W756-1AV Digital Sport Watch

Not only is it under 20, its loaded with features. I wouldn't buy a watch for running that doesn't have interval timers and this one has 9!

Another good interval timer is anyone of the timex Trainer line

If your budget is a little over a hundred you may want to look into GPS watches and HRM watches.
The cheapest GPS watch is the Timex marathon for about 100
and the cheapesst HRM watch is the polar f6 for about 60

Running Watches & where to buy them?

Lizard (LG

I am joining Cross Country and it is required to have a running watch. However, I have no clue where to buy one. Any ideas? I would prefer to not have to order it off an online site.

Answer
All a person needs from a running watch is

1. Stopwatch function
2. Easy to read/use while moving

$8 at Walmart, the BEST watch a runner can buy. This watch will take a bit of a beating - you will be sweating in it every day, tossing it in a bag with your other equipment sometimes, etc. There's no need to buy something fancy. These watches can take a bit of abuse, and more importantly, they can handle both the daily sweating, and being washed in the shower to keep the band from smelling like sweat. When it dies (which in my experience, will be 3 or more years after you get it), it will cost you less to just buy another one than it would costs to put a new battery in it.

I suggest you get one with a canvas band rather than the plastic, fake-leather ones. They could rub your skin. Also, look at the way the bands are made before choosing. You'll want one that pulls through a loop and back to a Velcro pad. This may be the last running watch you have to buy as a high school student.

I'm running cross country this year as a senior and this is the first time my coach has asked us to buy a watch. I'm not sure what kind of watch to get....The coach wants a watch a that will be able to keep my mile splits. Could you give me some ideas? I don't want to spend more than thirty dollars on this watch. thanks.

Answer
I use Timex Iron man watches, they are cheap and you can get your splits, and they also have a timer so you can use them for interval running.
I think my last one was less than $30.

Do you let your toddler watch a lot of cartoons?

That one

My 17 month old daughter loves cartoons! Every morning she runs to the TV and says cartoons over and over and even gives me the remote to turn on the TV. I read to her and play with her but after awhile her toys get boring and she's back to saying cartoons over and over. It's cold and nasty outside so we haven't been outside for awhile so I think she gets bored and I let her watch cartoons. Is this unhealthy?

Answer
My 19 month old always watches TV. Our TV is generally on all day when we're at home. We have a channel here in Canada that is called Treehouse, which only plays educational kid friendly shows with no commercials.

She loves to watch Dora, and Yo Gabba Gabba. She learns a lot from the programs that she watches. I wouldn't say it's unhealthy, as long as you aren't using the television as a babysitter and not interacting with your child at all. I personally think that the television shows stimulate their brains with all the colors and learning that the shows provide!

Looking for a good GPS watch?

Loz

So I'm a runner and I run 5-10 miles a day, so Im looking for a watch that can track mileage and is waterproof.
price range: $200-$300

Any suggestions?

Answer
Garmin Forerunner 110 GPS-Enabled Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Pink) is especially good for two kinds of runners: those who run on trails, and can't easily lock in distances (and thus pace); and those who travel, but still want to run outside, rather than on hotel treadmills

this watch gives you a lot of useful information, and even more when you download it to the Garmin Connect site. Unlike other Garmin watches, it doesn't give some extra cycling information and the heart rate monitor doesn't work in the pool, so it's really a watch for runners, not triathletes. But for semi-serious to very serious runners, it gives you everything you need, without the bells and whistles--and the headaches--of the 405.

What is the best running Accessory/Watch for measuring distance, pace, and calories?

Aaron K

Im starting to run longer distances now, and was wondering what different products people would recommend for measuring distance/pace/caloies while running? Would like to spend around 200$
thanks

Answer
They make really cool GPS watches nowadays that can track that stuff. Or nike has a device that connects with your ipod.

And counting calories is simple. approximately 100-120 calories per mile depending on your age/pace

Good yet inexpensive running (GPS) watch?

lovelygirr

I'm looking for a running watch that can monitor my distance, pace, and time, but is simple to use and NOT bulky. So far it seems like the Garmin 405 and Nike plus watches are the best out there.
I'm not interested in the Nike but there are a few bad reviews that scare me away from purchasing it immediately.
Any input?

Answer
If you don't need to download the data to a computer later, there's a cheap soleus model (link below)

You could get an ipod nano, which can track speed & distance via an internal accelerometer. It's fairly accurate in my experience.

The Motorola MOTOACTV looks very nice, with lots of features, but it's pricier and might be on the bulky side.

Running stopwatch for cross country?

Hally-Boot

I'm a high school girl new to cross country this year, and I don't have one of those running watches. Do I need a GPS too? What do they usually cost? Are there like specific brands that I should get or does it not matter? Thanks!

Answer
You really don't need one at all.
They are really helpful when you are training alone but they are never necessary. And since you probably won't be training alone more than one day a week I'd save my money and spend it on shoes.
But here are the three categories of running watches.
Interval timers.
These start at $20 (look for casio and timex brands). If you're running intervals by yourself these are necessities. but if you have a coach blowing a whistle - they are not necessary. The more expensive ones just have more options. You can also get a Gym Boss for $20 - they are much easier to program.
Heart Rate Monitors.
Polar,timex, Garmn
these start at $25, but the good ones start at 80. these can be very useful if you are trying to figure out if you are training hard enough (or too hard). Some coaches don't like them because they think its more important for you to pay attention to how you feel. And some runners think they are dorky. I used to really rely on mine but now I don't really need it.
Pedometers.
these may not really belong in this discussion. but if you have a iPod Nano, for $20 you can buy a nike + sensor and make it into a pretty good running watch. Pace, distance, time. And it plays music too!
GPS.
these watches usually include interval timers and the better ones include Heart Rate monitors too.
they start at $100. Maybe not a necessity but for me they are a lot of fun. Mine has a computer interface and I can log my runs and chart my progress. I have an old Garmin 305. At the time it was top of the line. Its been discontinued but you can still find them at overstock.
for really good reviews check out the website DCRainMaker

What is the best GPS watch for a distance runner?

D..

During the summer, I want a good GPS watch to clock 5+ mile long runs with... I want a watch that can tell me my minute-per-mile pace, miles ran, and how long I am running for, but is still a fairly reasonable price ($100-$200). What is the best website to order a GPS watch from, or just the best watch?

Answer
I have a Garmin 305. Its old, and they don't make them anymore. but you can still find them at Overstock.com.
It has a heart rate monitor. there are all kinds of accessories for it, too. It has every feature that you could ever want. It can upload and download stuff from your computer - and although its old - its software is new.
However its bulky , and ugly, and slow to find satellites (easy workaround - turn it on before you start warming up).
Amazon is a pretty good place to shop around. and the reviews are worth reading. DCRainmaker has a great website and he does very good reviews and has a lot of side by side comparisons.

I'm pretty sure the least expensive GPS watch is the Timex Marathon. and it does everything you want.
Oh, by the way. All GPS watches can not give you an accurate instantaneous pace. Some of them can be connected to a foot pod that can help with that. Also you can hit the lap button and get your pace for that lap. But if all you need it for is the features you listed you might be better off with a pedometer. If you have an ipod, the nike + kit is only $25.

What training/GPS watch to buy?

Leonard Mc

Hello,
as i have mentioned before i am kind of a beginner runner. Im doing quite well, already have placed running in my every day schedule . Ive read about all these training /GPS running watches on the market and i think i should buy one. I would love to track my training and i also saw that some have set programmes but im so confused on picking the right one for me. Please help!
Thanks!

Answer
Ahh, the watch search..
Been there, done that, love to share.

First off, it totally depends on what stats you are looking for and how much money you willing to spend.
There are watches that track distance, calories, pace, time and heart rate if you get a heart rate monitor (i would advise that, specially as a smoker).

There are watches that track all the above while cycling or swimming too. In fact there are even watches that have even a barometric altimeter, compass and a hunt/fish calendar..Ok yeah i know, not for running, but still its amazing.
As Apollenaire stated above me, i swear by garmin too.

If you want to expand your training to cycling and swimming, i strongly recommend the Garmin Forerunner 310xt. Its as far as i know the only watch out there that can deliver on all 3 modes and is 100% waterproof. http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/whrm-review-the-ultimate-tool-or-just-another-stop-watch/
If you want to just have a watch to track your running and all that in a really really really simple way, id get the Forerunner 110. Its made just for running and is as easy to use as a stop watch.(plus it looks too cool and comes in many colors) http://www.runningwatchesreviews.com/garmin-forerunner-110-gps-sport-watch-with-heart-rate-monitor-review-think-pink/

Note: if you do get a heart rate monitor and you dont like the strap , good thing about garmin is that you can buy a polar strap and it will work fine with the garmin transmitor, but the polar transmitor doesnt work with a garmin watch.

Take care and keep running!!

Advice on how to run a kid-friendly cooking class?

queenjay12

my job asked me run a cooking class for the kids at our center...well i am enroll in culinary arts school but I never cooked with kids..so i need some fun ideas and recipes to do with them....thank you

please no silly things this is my job here people

Answer
Here a few great videos that demonstrate cooking with kids.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hEgufgam4A

The Kraft site has a lot of great ideas too. http://www.kraftfoods.com/KF/YOURKIDS/KidsLandingPage.aspx

Setting up safety rules ahead of time and practicing the dish yourself will help so much. You can make easy cold things like fruit kabobs. They can cut fruit with a plastic knife.
I made pancakes with preschoolers. Using a spatula with a long handle and placing something inbewteen the child and the electric griddle works well. Of course a staff person has to be in charge of the griddle at all times.
We rolled out bread dough and filled it with all kinds of things like cheese, ham, pizza sauce, etc. like a calzone and bake them.

Mango-Cheese Quesadilla
A Cooking with Kids Original Recipe

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: about 5 minutes
Yield: 1 serving (1 quesadilla)

Use this as a basic recipe for quesadillas (keh-sah-DEE-yahs)âa Mexican treat that melts cheese and other goodies in a flour tortilla. This version pairs sweet mangoes with tangy red onion and melted cheese, but you can make quesadillas using your favorite ingredients. Be careful that the tortilla doesn't cook faster than the cheese can melt, or you'll wind up with a hard, blackened, Frisbee-like concoction. For best results, cook on medium to low heat, checking the bottom of the tortilla after a couple of minutes to make sure it's not burning. If you're cooking many quesadillas, place the cooked ones on a baking sheet in a warm oven until all are completed. For more creative combinations, see the list of ideas below.

Kid Tip
Kids of all ages can help make these tasty morsels. Young ones can shred or sprinkle on the cheese, and kids old enough to use a knife can chop the ingredients and flip the quesadillas with a spatula.

Cooking Tip
When preparing quesadillas, make sure your ingredients are thinly sliced, finely shredded or finely chopped, so they'll cook or melt quickly.

Do this first:

Chop enough red onion to make 1 tablespoon.
Peel and chop enough mango to make 1/3 cup.
Shred enough Monterey Jack or other cheese to make 1/3 cup, or use pre-shredded cheese.
If the tortilla seems dry, wet your clean hands and rub it on both sides with water to dampen. Let the tortilla rest a few minutes to absorb the moisture before cooking.

Wish you great success. =)

Dragon Ball Z opening with gohan running on dragon?

I can't find this version, if it exists, anywhere on the internet

best heart rate monitor watch?

Chloe M

My boyfriend is massively into running, not paticularly long distance (although he does this once a week) but more sprinting and interval training. He loves keeping fit in general and i keep hearing him talk to his friends about heart rate monitor watches! now im completely clueless but would love to buy him a really nice one for his birthday, but i have no idea where to start? What make is best? what should i look out for? I know he wouldn't like anything too big and bulky as he has really small wrists, please help

Answer
You can look up heart rate monitors online and look for reviews (review heart rate monitor)...if you get him one, get one with the chest strap as it will automatically send his heart rate to the watch so all he has to do is look at it to get a reading, not hold his finger on the edge for the watch to take a reading (many of that type don't work well while you're moving around)...

I bought mine at Wal-Mart for about $50 or less, nearly 2 yrs ago...I've gotten lots of use out of it, and wear it 4 or 5 days a week when working out...

do you know of any good dependable heart rate monitor watches. i mainly want to use it for running?

AJ

i might also use it for swimming but mainly for running, and are there any ones that are rechargeable. nothing to expensive, unless its completely worth it.

Answer
The basic Polar (FS1) is a good and reliable heart rate monitor. It isn't rechargeable but the batteries last a very long time.
If you want to spend a little money you can get monitors that have more functions and Polar is a good buy. I've had several different brands and the best for me was Polar.

Hey, i was just wondering as i want to do the military run fitness test is there a piece of equipment i can purchase which will calculate how long i have run and the time i have taken? or can you at least tell me how to calculate a mile myself so i can time myself :) thanks

Answer
I believe "a piece of equipment i can purchase which will calculate how long i have run and the time i have taken" are both the same thing, a watch. If you have one, mapmyrun.com will give you the distance you have run. It will measure from your front door to wherever you run and back if you wish, even include changes in elevation.

I need some running tips!?

today for my soccer team i have to run 7 1/2 miles( 30 laps ) in an hour. And last year when they had the same event i only ran 6 miles ( 24 laps ) in an hour. Any help on keeping breathing down and running faster?

Answer
run 5 mi/day with wind sprints. Make sure it's measured 5 miles and you know where the miles are. Use a watch or a stopwatch to time yourself. Get a book on running form and have someone watch you so you can cut down inefficiencies. Aim to cut 5 seconds per day off each mile. If you train for a month you should be able to do this. Your target is 8 minutes per mile. You're currently running 10 minute miles.

RUNNING:When you are just out on a training run, do you wear a watch and keep track of your pace?

turtle gir

I have recently started leaving my watch at home. After nearly five years of tracking every workout, I just want to run.
I still want to race well, I just don't think I need to pace every run, do you?

Answer
I, like you, wore my watch every time I went out for a run, until I ran a marathon in 36 degrees a few years ago..;after about 20 miles the thing felt like a lead weight, and caused my wrist to sweat and itch...since then I've never worn a watch whilst running.

running pace HELP?

Sarah

i've been runnign x-country for 3 years now, and just this winter i started indoor track. as a workout during x-country season i've been doing thresholds, to get a pace, and after all these years, i still can't keep a steady pace. i've tried using a watch and watching it, but still can't stick with a STEADY pace, my split times are usually all over. HELP!!!!
how do you "adjust" your pace while you're running?

Answer
Do you start at a pace that's too fast, then slow down? If so, try to not going out too hard, and with each repetition, push it a little more. You've probably already tried this, but looking at your watch every 200 or 400 and adjusting your pace according might be good. It depends on the distances your running, but it's not a big deal if you're times vary a few seconds, or even 5-10 seconds on distances over 800 meters. Just make sure that you put forth a lot of effort, and your workouts should be effective. Worry more about your level of exertion than your actual times

A 1080p picture when compared on larger screens will look better than 1080i. In a basic sense 1080p will provide a better picture on a 37" or larger HDTV, and arguably on a 32" or larger.

Many displays and monitors cannot display over 60 fps. Fluent play is about 35 to 40 or higher.

Without Fraps: 100-250 FPS Variable
With Fraps: Capped at 60

230fps after a fix

Yes, at least 60 if not recording and even 50's+ in recording.

This $500 Acer is i5-3210M and GT 630M and should play the same as the HP Envy:

Generally, the HP Envy costs more than its specifications justify.
Here is a current owner survey and HP has fared low in it for years

17.3" i5-3210M GT 640M Acer at $650

You don't need an i7 unless at least a GT 650M.
Once into the $800 range, you go to Lenovo.com for Y500's on sale.
16GB DDR3 ram is a waste. The i7 and 16GB ram is for video editing of large videos; not for gaming. Gaming will max out its need at 8GB.

Anyway, good luck. Before you go for the HP Envy, please learn about requirements in gaming. And, BEATS is just an audio profile change. You do better with external speakers and a free equalizer.
