i'm just trying to learn more about protein powder. my husband drink protein shakes with added carbs to gain weight. but when i read mags they say to drink protein shakes to lose weight/gain muscle.
i'm 5'2" and 129 lbs and i'm trying to get down to 105-110 lbs. by the middle of august (my honeymoon). should i be drinking protein shakes to help me lose weight? i'm having trouble losing weight even with going to the gym 3-4 days a week.
Answer
Good news! You use the same shakes to bulk up and to slim down.
Specifically, it prevents your body from breaking down muscle as you lose weight. If you are working out, it will also allow your muscle mass to increase.
So, the question is, do you want to look good, or do you want to lose weight? Somewhere in the middle, there is a HOT little you, right? So you want to find the right combination of getting rid of fat, increasing muscle, and getting to the place where you look really good.
You need to add muscle, not just tone up or burn calories..
Don't be doing cardio. Cardio is counterproductive. It helps train your body to burn calories more efficiently, which is great if you are starving and don't want to lose weight, or want to be able to run a half marathon. But that isn't our case here. We want our body to BURN as many as possible. So, stop running for distance...
Do high intensity interval training instead.

In other words, sprint for 45 seconds. Walk for 2 minutes, sprint for 45 seconds, walk for 2 minutes. repeat that five times. I do this on an elliptical machine at the gym. You can do it at the high school track if you want. the goal is to absolutely hit the wall and then recover, then do it over. It is grueling, but not as grueling as 45 minutes of "jogging".
Most people eat way too much junk.
Cut the sugar as low as you can. Reduce the amount of bread you eat each day to maybe 2 slices a day or less. Drop the butter, milk and ice cream. No soda, not even diet. Drink water and lots of it, like 3 liters a day. Eat 6 times a day, make certain you have an endless supply of apples and bananas. You can't get real fat eating a 70 calorie fruit:-) Snack on that instead of 400 calories of potato chips. Now, increase the amount of protein you eat, which for you would run about 80 grams a day, or more if you can find it. Do not eat protein free salads. It will hinder your goal of fitness.
You need to track your overall calorie intake, and target a 500 calorie deficit, which is probably about 1500 calories a day for you. Keep track of everything you eat, and the calories that consume. Put it into a spreadsheet, or track it on a sheet of paper. You can find out the calorie counts of most foods either on the product itself or on the web at http://www.calorieking.com and other places out there as well.
You could start doing body weight workouts, push ups, crunches, sprints, squats, lunges etc.
Take up a sport this summer. Swimming is great, bicycling is great too. Follow each workout with that protein shake and it will give you positive results.
For some great body weight exercises, go to http://bodyrock.tv
Go to youtube.com and search for core and abs exercises. I like planks and working with a fitness ball, lots of variations on the theme.
You need to lose just a few lbs and add muscle so that you are lean and fit, as opposed to bony and sickly looking. You can really start to look good in just a month or so, looking great in 2 or 3. But it is HARD work, there is no easy option. Go check out what Jessica Simpson did to prepare for her movie role as Daisy Duke. It is hard work. Is it worth it? I bet you will say that it is, when you get there.
Good luck, congratulations newlywed. I've been at it for 20 years now, and it can be a very good thing.

Why are apes faster and stronger than us?
c
This is probably going to seem like a really dumb question, but please don't try to make me feel stupid.
Anyway, I was watching Planet of the Apes, and I was thinking, "When we evolved... Why did we lose strengh and speed?" it's sort of like we downgraded a little bit. Well I can't think of anything else that would make me seem less stupid so... Why is it?
Answer
Apes are not faster than us. We can run pretty fast, if we are well trained. It has been pointed out that some of the fossil footprints left behind by Australian aboriginines showed that they ran faster than the fastest Olympic sprinters. The average man and woman do not get as much exercise as the average hunter gather gets. That may be the reason we do not run very fast. We can, however, run for longer distances than the apes. I doubt that any ape would be able to survive a marathon race, but the average man or woman can be trained to run a marathon in just a couple of years. It appears that we are not built for absolute speed, but for efficient locomotion over long distances. That is probably because we have to cover long distances on the savanna to find prey and to gather plant food. The !Kung Bushmen of Africa hunt for following prey for long distances, tracking them using their footprints, tiring them out by making them sprint repeatedly and incurring oxygen debt in the form of lactic acid buildup. IOW, the !Kung Bushmen hunted similarly to African wild dogs and wolves.
In terms of strength, we do have noticeably weaker jaws than apes. It has been suggested that ape brains cannot grow bigger because of the massive muscles that are attached to their skulls. These muscles are missing from our skulls so our brains can keep growing for a longer period of time during childhood. So, we may have given up some brute strength for intelligence. Not a bad tradeoff because we are able to make much better tools than apes. The spears, bows, arrows, and stone axes that our ancestors made were actually more deadly weapons than the jaws and teeth of the apes. Neanderthal men, one of our closest relatives, appeared to have wrestled big game animals with short weapons. Chimps and gorillas would not have the strength or the weapons to do that. Neither do we, but we can bring down large animals with spears and arrows. In fact, our hunting method is probably superior to those of the Neanderthals since many Neanderthal skeletons had injuries that probably resulted from such close combat during hunts. They also lived shorter lives than Cro-Magnon men on average. Despite our inferior strength, we have outlasted the Neanderthals and we are, unfortunately, in danger of exterminating our closest living relatives: the chimpanzee and the gorilla.
Finally, genetics is not the only de
