question about gays and sports?

RickyD

i have always wondered why MOST (not all) gay people tend to dislike sports and i think i have an explanation for it. i hate watching sports coz i imagine every sportsman to be highly homophobic (believe me, i have my reasons!)..and i hate homophobes (call me homophobophobic!) so why should i cheer for them?? however, i personally love taking part in many sports coz it's fun. i just don't like cheering for other 'straight' guys?

what do you think?

Answer
I think most gay men, certainly when they were teens in school hated sports and team sports in particular because of the overt 'straightness' of it all. Having played sports all my life and been gay all my life I can say that I made a very conscious decision to compete in individual sports such as squash, tennis, competitive running and swimming because I HATED having to hide who I was and also hated the constant homophobic locker room banter that you tend to get with team sports. I know lots of gay men who love sport and love competing but tend to gravitate towards individual sports or team sports in gay leagues where they can be who they are and just concentrate on what they are competing in.
