Tips on running first 5k?

Celtics Ro

I'm 14 years old and I am running my first 5k in 2 weeks! I watched the boston marathon and it inspired me to continue running. I am interested on how to prepare for this. I am used to sprints not distance so this is new to me. All the help I can get! Thanks!

Practice running two miles, three miles, and even four miles.

Run two miles, and if you can't go any further you probably ran too fast. Running four miles trains your muscles for endurance, though I recommend only doing it once or twice (don't want to wear your legs before the race) those two weeks. Obviously the three miles (about 5k) is get the feel of running the actual race. But definitely run, without straining yourself, more than a 5k those two weeks.

And as for the run, Start off by pacing yourself. It'll be very tempting to try to keep up with the speed devils that sprint the first half-mile, just pretend they're not there and you will pass by a lot of them. The speed you start off with should be relatively the speed you maintain throughout the run. In fact its better if you go slower than slowly speed up. Only the last portion should you really push yourself. Believe it or not, you will go faster if you spread your energy.

A tip for future runs. During very long distance running (6+ miles) it can be beneficial to take planned breaks every so and so miles. As in 6-10 second breaks where you speed walk. You can try it on the 5k if it makes you feel comfortable.

Garmin running watch difficulty?

Cristian

i was out for a tempo run and i used my Garmin running watch, which keeps track of distance and time. so my first mile was 5:55 and then at my 2 mile, it was at 11:30, and i know i didnt speed up that much. in the end it said i ran 5 miles in 26:20, which is a 5:14 mile pace. i don't know where the watch got screwed up but it didnt make sense at all. anyone ever have the same problem and knows how to work this thing??

Answer
I've had the problem you've mentioned where my Garmin is giving mileage, pace or heart rates that are off but it always corrects by the end of the run. All that occurs to me is that you have to be sure that it has the GPS signal before you start. I usually have to wait a few minutes before it acquires one.
